Shopping During Curfew – Here’s How

I haven’t gone shopping in a supermarket properly since this whole pandemic started. Just being around so many people and waiting in line with people who don’t understand social distancing just gives me a lot of anxiety right now. I now do most of my shopping at the tiny Coops in residential areas and for things like A&W Root Beer, or other treats, I pass by a Sultan Center Express or a Trolley.

But, when I found out you can now book supermarket appointments after curfew, I decided to try it out.

Getting An Appointment

The website you need to go to is https://www.moci.shop/

You enter your Civil ID number, Civil ID serial number, email and phone number and you will be then be allowed to choose an appointment for the following:

– Slaughterhouse
– Fish Markets
– Cooperative Societies
– Grocery Markets

Depending on where you live you’ll have different options and places available since the options are related to your home address.

I live in Salmiya so under the “Grocery Markets” section it’s like hitting jackpot since I have the options of like 3 or 4 Sultan Centers, Carrefour, Oncost and Wholesome Food. Sadly none of them were working, I think it’s a coming soon thing. The only option I had was Salmiya Coop located under the “Cooperative Societies” section.

I wasn’t expecting any dates to be available but oddly I found a bunch for the same day and more for the next couple of days. I decided to book an appointment for 6:30PM which was around an hour later. Once you’re done booking you’ll get two QR Codes. One is for the supermarket and one is for the cops patrolling the street. The QR codes are connected to your Civil ID so everyone out during curfew needs to have a separate QR code and everyone entering the supermarket needs to have a separate one as well. I don’t believe you can get one QR code and just pack the family in the car and head to the Coop.

Curfew Pass

They don’t give you any information but I remember hearing or reading that you can’t get a supermarket/curfew pass and then head the opposite direction. Since I was taking the Alfa out I figured I’d plan a scenic route to the Coop.

Obviously I didn’t take that route but I thought it would be a funny thing to tweet. The thing is cops on roads give me a lot of anxiety even when I’m not doing anything illegal on a normal day. So driving to the Coop during curfew turned out to be super stressful because there were cops EVERYWHERE! Like every intersection and corner had a cop car plus cops driving up and down the roads and cops in unmarked cars. All with their flashers on so you can’t tell if you’re in trouble or not, you just feel they’re all flashing their lights cuz you did something wrong. Or maybe it’s just me cuz I get stopped a lot and guess what? I got stopped on my way to the Coop, and on my way back! If that wasn’t stressful enough my QR code gave errors both times with the cops. I guess because I had just done the booking? No idea but when they’d scan the QR code it would tell them it wasn’t valid. The first cop told me it was fine and I could continue on my way to the Coop, the second cop when I was heading back home wanted to investigate the error further so I ended up parked on the side of the road for around 5-10 mins. In the end, he also let me continue home.

The Supermarket

I got to the supermarket early at around 6:15. The first thing you do is sign up at the desk and give them your Civil ID. You get it back on the way out because I think it’s how they keep track of whos inside because every group is allowed 30 minutes of shopping. Our group was around 20-30 people. At 6:30 they told us we could go in and right away there was a rush of people crowding up wanting to get in because nobody understands social distancing or the fact that this wasn’t an episode of Supermarket Sweep. A friend who had an appointment at the same Coop but at 6PM told me they had let them inside in small groups of 5 people at a time so it depends on whos in charge I guess.

You are only allowed to get an appointment once a week FYI. So if I try to get another appointment now I get the following message:

Tips

Firstly, I doubt I’m going to get another shopping appointment again. I can’t deal being in a place with so many people right now. If people understood was social distancing was then yeah I could do it but a lot of people don’t get it. While my items were getting scanned at the cashier, a guy who works at the Coop came between me and the lady behind me (who was social distancing correctly) and started emptying her cart onto the conveyor belt. But like dude, I’m still AT the conveyor belt, I still haven’t paid, why did you have to squeeze up next to me to unpack her stuff? We were doing so well without your help. I had to tell him to move away and give me some space and he got bothered by it. Like, come on. So personally I’m gonna stick to smaller mini-markets for now.

But the first tip I’d give would be to take your time going in. If you can shop in less than 30 mins then you don’t have to get in right away. Just take your time, wait till the crowd leaves the first area (most likely the veggie section or whatever the first section at your supermarket is) and then go in. You’ll have fewer people around you and you would be visiting sections when everyone before you had finished from it and left.

My second tip is don’t register for an appointment if its an hour or less later. Not sure how long it takes for the QR code you get to work with the cops, but it’s annoying to get stopped and it’s even more annoying not to have a working pass. Next time I’d book for the following day just to be safe.

Hey Mark,

How early did you leave the house to go to the Co-op? Like, can we leave the house 10 minutes before the scheduled time, so that we can get there on time?

Thanks for the detailed post!

I left around 6. They don’t give any details. I guess if I left say 5 and the cops stops me and sees that’s my appointment is 6:30 he’s gonna be like where do u think you’re going?

Alright, so i guess, basically, be smart about it and don’t push your luck 😛

Thanks for the response Mark, i appreciate it.

Have a nice evening, and stay safe.

the site doesn’t close, not sure why you’re getting that message. try from your phone, or if you’re on your phone try from your computer

I can’t access moci. com.. Why is it ur only prioritizing Kuwaiti as if there’s no other nationalities that needs to buy food? For God Sake!

well there is an option you can select that says my address doesn’t match my civil id. u can see it in one of the images above but i didn’t click on it.

The auto number is the number on the little license plate thing next to your apartment door. PACI NO. is on it

Hi. I have 2 QR codes- green for security and blue for Coop. What about my car?

Hi..kindly advice what if i missed the email and dint take screen shot.how can get the booking reference number

For me, the best time to go to a supermarket is in the morning; It’s not that hard to wake up early and get there when they open. I do agree that people in supermarkets are not respecting social distancing, and having that implemented at the cashiers is not enough when you have to dodge other people in aisles! Also, I found it rude before and even more rude now when some stranger touches my trolley to move it aside so they can move around, and let’s not forget how the aisles keep getting stocked/restocked just as much as people are moving around in them.

Good morning …l tried logging in the website and l used the same address code on my civil id and lm stuck on changing the address code it doesnt allow me .its giving a column which says you cant change your address twice .l live in Salmiya my civil id address is Riggai ..is there any other way to go about it

I hope it remains this way forever. There are so many deadly microbes and we expose our children to risk every time we go on the streets. For example , this curfew might be effective against AIDS – if you want to have a private moment with your partner, submit request in advance via local police station or family doctor and help save lives. Maybe government can install surveillance cameras in our flats and electronic door locks, just like in hotels but it will be remotely controlled by baladia. Stay safe! DONT GO OUT.

I have only 2 options while booking 1) Corporative societies 2)Supply Branches. What does Supply branches refers to?

Also is the Fish Market open now, if yes how to book that.

So this is probably the wrong place to comment, but any idea if there is any kind of permit for non emergency reasons? I have to find a way to let my dog relieve himself at night because he can’t possibly hold it in for 16 hours every day. Anyone with dogs have a solution?

Sir I forget my booking reference no. I don’t hv screen shot also so how I cancel booking

I hear you on fearing the cops. My luck would have me stopped by the one that was not briefed on the QC code process.

Has anyone else also started to refuse the help of those grocery cart unloaders / baggers? Im sorry but im sure they use the same pair of gloves all day.

I really hate bagging my own groceries….what a pain in the ass to get the plastic bag to open!! I remember my first supermarket experience in Madrid (outside kuwait self bagging, even self check out is the norm) I was the dumb fuck foreigner taking for ever bagging their groceries and because i was unaware I had shopped Sultan Centre style with a basket FULL of things.

I have been doing my grocery shopping in the mornings and it has been always a success and swift.

How i know my booking Namber
I mean.. My booking reference Namber.. I don’t know how I get it

Does anyone know if supermarkets are open as normal during the day during Ramadan as well? With two toddlers once a week for half an hour would not even come close to being enough to do our shopping :(.

I’m really worried about this 🙁

THIS IS WHAT I read:

Other supermarkets and hyper markets have the following timings this Ramadan:

City Centre from 8:30 am ~ 3:30pm
Sultan Center 9:00 am ~ 2:00 pm
Lulu Hypermarket 8:00 ~ 3:00 pm
Grand Hyper 8:30pm ~ 3:00 pm

Only thing that closes is restaurants for dine in. Supermarkets and businesses open as usual and some restaurant even deliver during the day

I have booked an appointment for co-operative society and have chosen shopping during curfew hours . How will i be able to get curfew pass or the green barvode in the reservation is my curfew pass

QR code not barcode and no u don’t need to print it out. Unlike barcodes QR code’s can work digital, so by showing it in your phone

Thanks for sharing this, Mark.

Relieves a lot of stress knowing a person can shop for their family after work hours.

I so miss the BC (before Corona) days when I could simply call out for a masseur and coifffeur to come home. Now even ordering out for a pizza’s turning into a challenge.

i stay in Salmiya block 10 and I have selected Salmiya coop – I am little confused which coop I should go as one is near Pizza Hut or the one is near Salmiya Garden Block 10 , can you please advise .

Can anyone advise how to make an appointment when the residence and civil id residence is at different locations .

Even though there is an option, there is an auto address no that needs to be entered. My current stay is at fahaheel. Can anyone advise what should be entered

After clicking it, it ask to enter auto address no. What is the number that needs to be entered

Has anyone used the option my address does not match the civil if if yes please share the details on how to use it

YOu need to enter the building PACI number which will be outside the building or outside the flat

Yes, but is changing address, in online! For ex: i was civil ID in Bneid Al Gar with few options for grocery, i change with Fnaitees, i get only Sultan Egaila witch has no slots available🤦‍♀️ I cant change back to Bneid Al Gar🤦‍♀️

I took 2 shopping appointment for me and my brother . Mine is 2 pm and my brother is 2.30 pm . My brother usually drive car . So can he leave with me before his time. Is there is problem if he recahes market before time.
Or I am allowed to reach market by 2.30pm even if my appointment is of 2 pm

is one appointment enough for shopping during curfew , means that if I take the appointment can I take my wife with me . will I have to take a separate appointment for her

Plz let me know that if I want to go do shoping during curfew hours and i got the pass but i have no car or licenes but my husband has it so how will i go can he be my carrier..??
Do we need to take another pass for him or just he can drop me and wait outside..?

Is there any specific time that we should try to book appointments. I have tried like a 50 times, it always says”no available appointment”.

Im facing the same issue, but no luck. Been trying to get an appointment since 2 days now.

I leave in Fnaitees, the only market i get i Sultan Egaila, but no slots available! How i get my groceries?

I visited the supermarket on 10 may it was a good experience I had the appointment and they let me in now the question is when shall I get my next appointment for supermarket

I have booked an appointment for co-operative society and have chosen shopping during curfew hours . How will i be able to get curfew pass or the green barvode in the reservation is my curfew pass

I booked an appointment at LULU for tomorrow morning but didn’t get any email confirmation so far. Is there any way to contact them, since I didn’t take screen shot off my QR code. Not I am in a fix as neither I can cancel and not can I make another booking till next week.

Other than coop appointment, there is another option for Supply branch . What is that?
Are gas cylinder available in Salmiya Co op?

What if you can’t drive and the Co-Op is a 30 minute walk from you? A: Can you walk there using the QR code (I don’t mind the walk) or B: Can you have a neighbor drive you? I live in Rumaithiya

But if we both have an appointment at the same time, she could drive me? That would be a massive help.

Can i and my husband both can go in same car with separate appointment of same time?

There are limited appointments and a lot of people who need to shop so when you take two spots you’re taking one from someone else who might need it.

Hello Mark,
I tried to book a slot unfortunately it is showing civil I’d has no data ,and there are only limited options showing ie :Cooperative societies, rations.
Do you have any idea regarding this?

friends i need help, i made the booking for thursday 14 may 2020 for the shopping and i didn’t recieve any email, i don have reference number as well, can some body please guide me to get this.

I keep getting this error when i enter my information

“Oops! error retriving data, please try again later.”

i have booked the appointment , but didnt save the barcode , i thought barcode will be send to my email address . but i didint received .

Please advise what should i do now …. i try to book new appointment now the system give me a massage you already have a valid appointment.

Go back to the website for making the appointment, On the top in a blue box it says Search Appointment. . Click on it and you should find the bar codes there.

Hello and thanks for all the info. I live in Salmiya too and am trying to go to Sultan Center Salmiya on Monday May 18. I entered the moci site, typed ciivl ID details, and Salmiya came up automatically as my district which was good as i want to shop in Salmiya. Next was the appointment time which I selected. Then the problem was “shopping destination.” You could choose Cooperatives OR EN-something in Arabic. I chose the EN choice but NOTHING came up.

After trying the whole process again with the same result, I took the appt and got the green and blue bar codes without being able to select where I am going to shop exactly. My plan is to head out on Monday hoping that an appointment to shop in Salmiya will work for me to enter Sultan Center.

Any insight on this? I think the moci site works differently at different times?!

Many thanks!
