Danke Biomarket

A new only organic specialist supermarket opened up yesterday called Danke. The supermarket carries a variety of organic foodstuff as well as biodegradable and recycled household items. Yesterday actually happened to be the first day they opened and so they were still busy setting up the place. The bakery for example was not functional last night but should be up and running by the time you read this post.

They’re in a soft launch phase but other than the freezers and the bakery the shelves were all stacked with products from various brands including Alinor, Allos, Bauckhof, Biovegan, Byodo, Lubs, and many more. They also had a small fresh produce section.

The owner happened to be there while I was checking out the place and he told me that although Danke is a local brand the concept was brought in from Germany. That would explain why all the brands I saw were European and mostly German. While trying to dig up info on the brand I noticed they also have an app. I just installed the app and it seems to contain all their products but not sure if it’s working yet. You can download it and check it out yourself here.

The place looks great so it’s worth passing by and checking out. They’re currently open from 8AM to 12AM and are located in the basement of Burj Jassem in Kuwait City. If you don’t know where that is, here is the link to Google Maps. They’re also on Instagram @danke_kw

I know I’m gonna get a lot of hate for this but I hope they carry Kombucha.

Sultan Center in Fahaheel in 2014 carried Portland kombucha and it was the happiest day of my life. Few in Kuwait back then knew what it was and I got to stock up on it as much as I wanted. πŸ™‚

I went to it yesterday and I was in heaven.
I’ve spent years in Germany and the selection is a typical of a midsize German Bio Market. Many German brands are available and especially Demeter quality (Bio-Dynamic, a more rigorous version of ‘bio’). They also carry the ‘original’ producers of the products Natureland (a Kuwaiti brand) sells here in Kuwait.
Their dairy section is extensive, mainly Andechser, I have never seen so much of their products in one place, and prices are similar to Kuwait’s Alban but you get Demeter or German-Bio!
Their frozen section items I could not see because they had not yet unpacked them.
I can’t wait to see what they do with their bakery once it is open.
Prices are reasonable when compared to what I used to pay in Germany and also compared other ‘bio’ brands sold in Kuwait, many of which I have serious doubts about their ‘bio’ credentials. I spoke to the German manager who said they clearly wanted to be competitive with other bio products in Kuwait.
However you nevertheless have to be aware that such products cost more than your regular non-bio brands.
I am not sure how buyers in Kuwait will perceive this if they decide to compare the prices to those they pay in regular supermarkets.
I hope they make it longer term, there may be enough people in Kuwait willing to pay for premium groceries given how the Kuwaiti Natureland brand has expanded in the last years.

Hi Mark!
I just found out about this place and also found out they are closed. Any idea if this is a permenant closure? Also, any idea why they closed?
