The Souk Sharq branch of Sultan Center has a new large organic/healthy section that I’m hoping they’ll start introducing into their other branches. I found lots of products which I hadn’t seen before in any of their other locations and the whole section looks like something from Whole Foods.
Speaking of healthy food, for some reason Natureland has increased the price of their quinoa and they’re now selling 500g for KD2.990. They used to sell it for KD2.050 so that’s a whopping 45% increase. Luckily for us, there are a lot more options for quinoa nowadays and Sultan sell a few options including one which costs KD2.500 for 500g.

Yay ! to Quinoa and Kale, at last in Q8. Also love the look and feel of
their wooden flooring. Wished TSC had blanket wooden flooring done on all of its other stores too. Gives it bit of a Fresh Market meets Sultan Centre sorta feeling.
They’ve both been available in kuwait for awhile now
Wall to wall wooden flooring for TSC is fine provided it
is faux wooden and not the real thing.
Its clear mark as well as others are unaware of the problems the true quinoa culture is suffering…
heres a look:

only expect the price to go up more and more. And if only those poor farmers so more of the profit margin…
So basically the folks that grow it cant eat it anymore due to #1stworldhealthyeatingdemands …
if only people realized how such decisions influences other cultures.. Look at how ethiopia now is struggling to afford Teff to make its traditional injera bread due to western demand for this “luxury” good.
Yeah but this issue isn’t a new one, it’s been like that ever since quinoa became popular world wide. Plus none of the other quinoa brands increased their prices just Natureland.
Sometimes I feel like you don’t even read the posts you reply to.
It’s not about quinoa brands increasing their prices for people like you, it’s about greedy traders in south america that snatch the quinoa out of the poor people’s mouths to sell it abroad.
I did read your comment and I had already read the article last year. When I mentioned quinoa in my post it was about Natureland increasing the price of quinoa not quinoa in general increasing in price.
I’ve been waiting for you to blog about this and I think I mentioned it in one of my comments recently. It is nicely done, but I did see many of the same product lines at SaveCo. It is nice that Kuwait is beginning to understand the health benefits of quinoa etc. I know that you understand it though, BUT I will repeat my last comment, with the selling of these types of product lines in a country like Kuwait, there should be education. You really can’t just sell food anymore, because with Dr. OZ, THE DOCTORS, etc. people are more educated on how food effects their lives ESPECIALLY in a country with such high diabetes levels in the population, but a department like this can be overwhelming to a consumer. What I suggest, is that they have nutritionists (food specialists) in these sections on high traffic days to explain to people the benefits in order to move the product lines. Otherwise, you will just end up throwing a lot of expensive products in the trash. I would also encourage SOMEONE, possibly this store to put a fresh juice stand in the produce area (NO SUGAR) and the kale that does not move or produce that does not move is sold in juice form. I think the Kuwait public would like this, it is very popular at Carrefour in Dubai and they have all flavors.
Yeah most of the items are available in Saveco, mind you they say its an organic section on their instagram and half of the items are not like schar which is why i dont buy anymore from there its not ethical to say its an organic section and have non organic items. I saw them do the fresh juices in saveco in the juice section. you are right they need to be educating people about the products the only thing i can think of is maybe handing out leaflets about quinoa or any other food.
As an aside there is a brilliant article in Harper’s on Quinoa and the implications on the Bolivian economy where it is maximally harvested and grown. But that’s not to rubbish the health benefits that Quinoa has.
Maybe its a bit off topic, and I’ll probably get hate for it, but organic food is bullshit.
1. Organic food has no discernible difference in vitamin content compared to genetically modified. No scientific study has found it to be any healthier. Source: https://annals.org/article.aspx?articleid=1355685
2. Although they may market it as pesticide or hormone free, organic foods use the same pesticides as genetically modified foods do. Source: https://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~lhom/organictext.html
3. Multiple blind taste test have been done comparing organic to traditional, and the vast majority of them show that people find genetically modified fruits and vegetables to taste better than their organic counter parts or there is no discernible difference. 4. Organic foods are not necessarily better for the environment. Some farms even produce more greenhouse gasses compared to genetically modified crops. Source: https://www.ox.ac.uk/media/news_stories/2012/120904.html
5. Organic food can be more dangerous to consume because they are not treated the same way as traditional crops. Source: https://www.foodsafetynews.com/2012/09/organic-food-not-proven-healthier-or-safer-study-finds/#.U84xsPmSySY
So my advice? Save your money.
Have heard all the arguments made for and against GM foods. It’s the first I hear someone say something against organic.
There should be a section called “Shout out to Fay”, where you give me credit every time you write something on your blog that is based on a conversation we have had in real life.
Oh so now you read my blog
