Extinct shark found at the Sharq Fish Market

fishmarket

This story has been making rounds all over the internet the past few days but the actual discovery was made back in 2008. A shark species thought to be extinct was found dead at the Souk Sharq Fish Market. More interestingly though, flipping through the photos in the article, I had no idea shark fishing was so prevalent in the region. [Link]

Most fish, squid and all those animals are carnivores. Big fish eats little fish…. or have I misunderstood and ‘we’ is some type of non carnivore eating sect that only eat helpless herbivores?

“We” are allowed to eat anything in the sea, including carnivorous fish. Surat “Al Maida” Ayah 96 in the Quran it is stated, that everything that we fish from the sea is Halal. Don’t know where you guys are getting the info that its haram..

The Shi’ites sect in Islam don’t eat certain types of creatures from the sea (crabs, lobsters, sharks, the list goes on) but the Sunni sect do. The Quran states that everything from the sea is good to eat.

{ أُحِلَّ لَكُمْ صَيْدُ الْبَحْرِ وَطَعَامُهُ مَتَاعًا لَّكُمْ }

Actually I just googled this and found the answer that I have always known… There is a dispute between Sunnis on whether to eat sharks or not. In general we don’t eat carnivorous animals and to many sharks fall under this section based on its teeth and the interpretation of the hadeeth. However, there are some scholars who disputed this and so they said its ok. and according to this website https://fatwa.islamweb.net/fatwa/index.php?page=showfatwa&Option=FatwaId&Id=5215 it seems to agree that its ok.

Anyway, I asked about shark in Kuwaiti cousin and it seems that some Kuwaitis do eat sharks. The dish is called “myaddam” and its usually cooked using small sharks.

I’ve grown up knowing that we don’t eat sharks. I personally choose to believe that sharks fall under carnivorous animals and the thought of eating it is disgusting. Also the fact that it stores its piss between its bones (and sharks have the most repulsive smells after they’re caught) cements my decision of not eating it ;p

Any type of seafood is edible by Islamic Law. Allah says: any catch of water animals is Halal for you (Surat Al-Maidah(#5), Verse 96).

Sharks getting butchered everyday is actually bad for us. A lot of sharks get killed everyday here and it really is affecting the eco system.. Sharks eat groupers (hamoor and other big fish) .. without them the number of groupers increases for a while but then goes back to decline majorly since groupers eat other small fish .. read about it and what it’s doing to the ecosystem .. it’s very important that someone raises awareness and ban fishing for sharks is the right thing.
