Hazel the Mac Finder Organizer

Hazel

My desktop is cluttered with a ton of jpgs, urls, txt files and other random shit. In fact, the majority of Mac users desktops are cluttered. Its a Mac thing.

This is where Hazel comes into play. Hazel can help you keep your desktop and any other folder organized. You could create rules that will tell Hazel to do a certain thing once these rules are met. For example, you could tell it that any JPG that is placed in the Desktop to automatically take it and place it in the Pictures folder. Or if you find a movie file place it the movie folder. You could also set rules based on time, for example you could tell it to delete files from the trash that have been there for more then a week. Its really flexible and you could really do a lot with it.

Problem is its not free, but what I am doing is trying it out and if it turns out the software is actually practical I will pay for it. Check it out. [Link]

A MacUser making rules??? Ho ho ho hohhohohohhoh! Like “what if I might need that .jpg; I think I will just keep it there for RIGHT NOW (right now goes on for six months or so) . .. .MacUsers HATE rules!

hehe exactly. i have stuff on my desktop that have been there for like years. even when i changed macs and formated my computer i always copy this stuff again onto my desktop but they get thrown in a folder called “Old Desktop”. Inside that folder is an older “Old Desktop” and i think i have like 3 of those

“I will pay for it”

lol windows user probably will not understand this

and that what make windows world wonderful, you get tons of software in every category and you get it for free

I need a program that is more like a private assistant. It intelligently knows where to file a certain program and finds many of the old folders that are hidden beneath the rubble. Lets call it Private Assistant 1.0. I have so many old folders I don’t even know why they exist in the first place. A private assistant should scan all folders and subfolders for contents that are similar in composition and suggests a much simpler filing, and not by creating rules. Once you accept the suggestion, the program learns and automatically files everything for you. All you have to do then is use codes. Mac is in general much better that Windows when it comes to file finding.

Another cool program for mac is quicksilver and its free.

Hi, im just wondering whats the difference between this hazel software and the “folder actions” script that comes in FREE WITH THE MAC? you can do all these things that your are describing!

Haha I had to laugh when I read how similar we all are when it comes to desktops 😀 Especially with the “old desktop” folder with an “old desktop” folder in that folder and so on.

I have a folder on my desktop with some 1000 files, all scattered around in subfolders which were created over time because I always keep stuff on my desktop that I need to watch again later on.

I have different purposes for Hazel than my desktop though… My downloads folder is usually pretty clean, but I don’t always remember filenames and lose my zip’s and rar’s often, Hazel can now move my compressed files to a folder, pictures to another folder, pdf’s, links, ….

Great post!
