I think I finally found a replacement for TextEdit and its called WriteRoom. This is how the creators describe it:
For Mac users who enjoy the simplicity of a typewriter, but live in the digital world. WriteRoom is a full screen, distraction free, writing environment. Unlike standard word processors that focus on features, WriteRoom is just about you and your text.
You set the software to full screen and thats it, you are suddenly in a different place. You could also change the background color to blue and the text to white and pretend you are Doogie Howser. Whatever colors you go with, the most important thing is this software is free! [Link]

No bold or italics ?
TextEdit would still be my first choice. Try OpenOffice.
no bold or italic :
Mini R OpenOffice is like Microsoft Office… bloated.
TextEdit on the other hand is completely different. WriteRoom is closer to TextEdit then to OpenOffice of Microsoft office.
Thats pretty cool!
Great app. Hope it develops more!
From XvsXP.com:
“Apple’s philosophy is that a maximized environment is inherently inefficent since it makes dragging content from one window to another cumbersome”
Doogie Howser?! MD?!
There’s something I though I will never hear again 🙂

WriteRoom 2.0 does support bold and italtic. And should support pretty much all text edit features.
doogie howser was using the popular wordperfect 5.1 for dos back then … so was I ….
