Bizarre and horrific accident on the First Ring Road

accident

I just passed the scene above awhile ago on my way home on the First Ring Road. From my position it looked like a nasty accident but I just saw the video below and the accident turned out to be a lot more horrific than I first imagined. This took place during rush hour which means there was heavy traffic. How can such a terrible accident occur during rush hour? It’s insane, it doesn’t make any sense.

I work in Sharq and regularly take this route to get to work in the morning. Its not uncommon to see guys in the fast lane driving over 120 kmph on 1st Ring Ring and suddenly swerve to the right to take the exit. I myself have narrowly escaped getting sideswiped many times.

Its tragic I agree but I’m not surprised at this scene.

It’s unbelievable how reckless people in this country can be when they drive. The laws are pretty good though, just like anywhere else. It’s the people and the way they think that’s to blame.

I generally tend to blame the authorities since people will abuse the law if it’s not being enforced and in Kuwait the law isn’t enforced or just. 1000KD fine if you BBQ on the Gulf Road but KD400 if you run a red light. Car gets impounded if you have a small sticker on the rear window but you just get a ticket if you get caught speeding.

I think both of you are correct. The law needs to be enforced, but the people, in general, are also extremely reckless.

People fly up that ramp trying to make the light. They cut into traffic when they get to the top. What happened here is someone probably stopped for the light and then several cars back, a speeding car hit from the rear and caused a multi-car crash (pushing up the white – or the white one flew over the blue car). Dude must have been going pretty fast to cause that much momentum.

Personally, I don’t think that anything is going to change people’s attitudes towards reckless driving here. Some see it as their God-given right: Get out of my way or I’ll kill you. Entitlement.

Yeah you”re right… Like today i was on my way to work going through sabahiya roundabout 30. Big rush in the morning as usual and i was carefully watching the cars left and right, front and back then after finally passing over the roundabout, there was this gold color toyota pajero who was driving nearly inches right side of me and was like having the move of trying to hit my car…. I remembered that when we were in the roundabout i did’nt give him way to go first…. Doesn’t mean i am a lady am a bad driver… No etiquette at all… I think that there should be a seminar given to existing and new drivers to be aware of.

Toyota Pajero?? 😮

you were carefully watching the cars left and right, front and back… you probably were too slow.. got the guy annoyed 😛

I’m just kidding.. but may be that’s the truth 🙂

omg its really sad ! Some one lost a life due to someone else mistake !
The guy who caused this accident is alive ? if he is then he should be treated as a criminal and punished equivalent to a murderer !!

This falls squarely on the shoulders of the police. Since they are absent and derelict of duty then this is their fault. And parking somewhere with your lights on doesn’t equal doing police work. The traffic police are pretty much good for nothing, I think most of the time they are actually making the streets worse by causing traffic.

PULL PEOPLE OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WRITE TICKETS!!!!!!!!!!! SUSPEND PEOPLES LICENSES!!!!!!!!!!

A little bit of police work would go a long way in improving our streets and quality of life. It sucks going out to do almost anything because it takes so long to get anywhere and you have to deal with asshats in the streets.

Sorry for the all caps but a guy can get frustrated from time to time. And again, if you are a policeman who tries to make a difference this isn’t intended for you, its for the other 99%.

WOOOOOOOSAAAAAAAHH (a nod to some police who got things done)

Putting the complete blame on the system & the police is being completely ignorant.. imagine if the govt listens to you and decides to put a cop on every signal, every corner in order cover the whole of Kuwait..

then you will see people complaining that living in Kuwait is like living in a jail.. there are cops everywhere.

I’m definately not saying that the traffic cops are doing a terrific job here.. they are, most of the times, awful. I’m an expat & i get terrified for real, the moment i see them.. not bacause I’m doind something wrong.. but because what they might find..(a scratch, the noise etc).. but even then, blaming accidents of such high magnitude on the cops is wrong.. like completely wrong…

I forgot to add the bottom line…

its the responsibility of the civilians to follow the law as much as its the responsibility of the Govt to enforce it & of the authorities who monitor it.

our problem in Kuwait is one someone drive like an asshole and ends up killing people on the street and him self… people are not allowed to talk shit about him because he’s dead.

we’ll he wouldn’t be dead and killing other people on his way out had he driven like he should on such roads.

this is just insane…
I think the only lesson that can be learned from this tragedy is to increase the height of the barrier. i’ve lost hope in educating the drivers.

That intersection witnessed MANY cars falling off the barrier. I have a relative who did after some asshole crossed a red light. He is now completely paralyzed… and the police lost the case file so the guy who caused the accident is free.

It’s been a year since I moved to Australia from Kuwait. I travel a lot between different states, clocking as much as 800 kms a day. In all this time I have only seen four or five accident, that too just fender benders. Driving here is a pleasure because people follow rules and are courteous on the road. When somebody does something wrong or irresponsible, you don’t need the police, it’s other motorists that will flag the person down and give them a talking too. It is all about respect…one must respect the law, respect others, respect themselves and most of all respect life. We just get one chance at it, why end it so tragically.

It is not just the police who are responsible for implementing the law, the responsibility belongs to each and every one of us. Although I still love Kuwait, I don’t miss driving there.

Keith,

I completely agree with you! I couldn’t have said it better. “It is not just the police who are responsible for implementing the law, the responsibility belongs to each and every one of us.”

Hey Keith,

Completely agree with you too, I went to visit NY last year and I was driving from the airport to my hotel when on a 3 lane road we were gliding through the left lane and surprisingly the 2 lanes on the right were moving at bumper to bumper speed, me logically thinking there must definitely be an accident ahead on the left side making the traffic so slow on those lanes, to my surprise after 3 km of going at a normal speed turns out the 2 other lanes were curving to a left turn that had traffic ahead and to my shock our lane is open since 3 km before with no one trying to cut left through the traffic like the people in Kuwait and sadly in the Arab world all over do thinking they are better than the people driving in line…. It is a sad culture that can be summarized to selfishness resulting of lack of respect of others.. It is not only bound to roads ethics, it is infiltrated to our day to day lives that makes it difficult for the ethical one to survive in this part of the world…

When you combine a “Me first” attitude with those that are simply clueless or brain dead, this will continue to happen.

Always wondered what happens to the person who caused the accident which resulted in the loss of life of another person ?

Is he / she jailed for life ?

Maybe Ms. Fajer can do a post on the same.

It’s all is behavior. Shocking news. Government should give power to public or selected people of all nationalities (voluntarily)to report misbehavior on the road.

As much as reckless driving infuriates me, I think we should first understand what happened in this scenario. Does any one know what happened? Someone said the brakes on the flipped car failed. Is that true?

Arrogance + Fast Car /SUV + No Value or respect for Others = horrific accident being discussed.

No silver bullet to fix the problem exists. As long as people have a me first and I can do what I like attitude or people with a bigger faster cars with the same attitude come bearing down the road at high speed, stick to your ass and constantly flash you to get out of the way…this will happen.

Or like Mathai mentioned, Motorists who believe they can come speeding from the left and at the last moment swing to the exit on the right at their whim and fancy again for the reasons I mentioned above then this will happen.

We can scream all we want but there is never a perfect solution. Here is suggestion though. The MOI should start an open web site where motorists can send in pictures and videos of offending drivers. The cops can not be every where at once. But we regular people are. Regular people with cameras and video phones. Hell we can even invest in and install a full time road cameras in our vehicles like Mark did. Send in the videos and if the MOI is serious on cracking down they can use the videos as evidence and fine the offenders. The reason motorist do the crazy shit that they do is that they believe that they are above the law and no one is watching , speed down an emergency lane coz they know there isnt a camera to catch them. Well we are there arent we? Why cant we be the eyes of the cops and put these ass holes in their place? If the cops had an all out bulletin in their systems against these jerks then they could pull over these assholes at any time , seize their vehicles, deport the expats and jail the locals. If the Ministry were heavy handed like this then trust me evryone would behave. You cannot argue with Video Evidence.

Kuwait isn’t like Dubai. There’s a popular instagram account that takes pictures of bad drivers to shame them.

This is tend to happen when someone loses respect for life.
the attitude of invincibilty & superiority will not do any good to anybody.

you must catch everyone who doesnt value the life of him/her & people around them, take all their money away & send them to Somalia, Ethiopia or Syria (right now) and let them see what life is.. how people live.. and how easy it is to die.

i said it before & i’ll say it again… no law will be able to change anything untill & unless the general public takes the responsibility on to themselves to make a change.

i hope the guy who died in this accident was the guy who caused it. an innocent losing his/her life for somebody elses mistake is not justified.

Hi Mathai,

I’d believe you trust me, a very recent sensless death caused by one very such soccer mom infront of a local Indian School because she couldnt wait to get home , cook lunch and didnt know how to drive makes me believe it. And you are right its possible you could get arrested for some wierd absurd reason but thats why the website should be Anonymous where in ..you should only post the video and not your personal details. The authorities should not be interested in the uploader only in the video.Unless of course you upload something stupid like porn or videos against the government then of course then your ass should be raked over the
coals 😉

Your video which you just posted had it been on the website that would have been evidence in it self of a traffic violation or crime. 02 crimes matter of fact. Because the idiot infront of you did it another idiot behind you thought hey why not I can do this too.

As long as the video clearly shows the crime and the Licence plate number that should suffice and be enough for the Ministry of Interior’s Traffic Department to put it in the system. Eventually the perp will get caught.

Again when presented with such a clear video as yours as evidence.. one has no room to argue or defend such behaviour. And if such a person were to be jailed or deported then I do not believe any one would stand to defend that person.
