In a move to reduce congestion, the Ministry of Interior started allowing cars to drive on the emergency lane during certain hours and on certain roads. Now according to the video above (it’s in Arabic), it seems majority of those emergency lanes will now be paved and converted into permanent driving lanes. I’d love to crack a joke about how that’s easier than ticketing people who were using the emergency lanes all day long but thing is this actually makes sense. Our highways will now be a lane wider which will reduce traffic. [YouTube]

Where do cars that need to stop, stop now?
the emergency lane on the right.
The right emergency lane is even safer to park with less speedy drivers (supposedly) next to the emergency lane.
+1.
Lol, on the right, where they’re supposed to : )
Does the one on the left get a name change?
Number of lanes is not the bottle neck
It will probably cause a bottle neck where the emergency lane ends. I wonder who made this decision and whether they have knowledge about how traffic works or consulted someone who does.
What?
So we’ll be witnessing cars driving at 100/120 kmh just inches from a massive concrete wall.
There are enough devastating accidents happening already with only the limited number of dangerous and illegal drivers using the emergency lane.
Now they have carte blanche to drive along them the number of accidents will escalate and their consequences will be greater.
I’m going to keep well away from the LH lane as massive SUVs, losing control (as inevitably they will be using their mobiles), clipping the concrete barrier, careering out into the LH lane, smashing into innocent people and causing untold destruction is too much of a risk for me.
Allow drivers to use emergency lane? Tail wagging dog? Smacks of an inability to enforce the law and protect law-abiding people.
If it works for Dubai (sheikh Zahed road for example) then it should work for us
Great logic.
Driving habits in Dubai are quite different than those in Kuwait.
It works for a lot of other countries over the world… But not sure if it’ll work in Kuwait…
Left lane that is already next to the concrete wall is already in place in roads 30 and 50 since the inception of these roads.
if you can’t beat them….
Join ’em :’)
I think it’s a good thing to increase the number of lanes, but not this way. I was hoping that they would actually build on the highways.
Look how long that’s taking.
Yes, it’s a long and tough process, but definitely worth it.
50% of traffic will be reduced if the law forces school buses to be activted. the school bus takes between 40-50 students rather than 40cars=40childs.
Amen
So close to that wall and all kinds of rocks and debris will be flying. Great news!
I would be nice to see some, “Keep right unless overtaking,” signs on the motorways. I know you might have to look up from your mobile phone to see them, but at least they’re there as a reminder.
Another day, another law.
First the legislated it and made it legal — for 24 hours before repealing it. Then the said you can and can not do it , depending on the mood of the ministers discretion. Then they placed cameras to catch those in the emergency lane, which supports the claim that its still illegal to drive there. Then today, the want to make it legal. As someone would say, “are you on the crack” ?
hahahahahahahhahaha…… its worse than a indecisive woman..
Just stager the times for things. High school starts at 830, middle school starts at 730 kindergarten starts at 7.
They get off at difrent times etc.
Ministries start at 9 and end at 5.
So that way the whole country is not hiting the road at exactly the same time.
Kindergarten starting at 7! Really!? Spare the little ones. I hated waking up that early for school. Still hate waking up before 9.
Children naturaly wake up early. When you have kids and they are treating your fave like a trampoline at 630 am you will understand
seriously!!! emergency lines should be only for emergency cases.
Increasing lanes not a solution. Example: 5th ring road towards Jabriya. One solution is to remove/reduce roundabouts.
What keeps everything in place are Rules.
Whats more important is implimentation and enforcing the rules…
Nearly every time I’ve been stuck in traffic it’s been because of people who struggle with the basic concepts of driving. Like those who have zero patience and try to overtake the exit lane by blocking off another lane. Or those who don’t understand that the far left lane should be for overtaking, not for you to sit there driving at 60 on your phone. And then the worst of the worst – the idiots who think it’s completely reasonable to enter a highway at 30-40km/hr. ACCELERATE. Your driving at a slow speed in this occasion is actually dangerous because cars all of a sudden have to go from 80-20!!! (I saw a 5 car pileup near jabriya because of this)
There’s also the issue that the entry and exits into the highway are pretty close and since a lot of drivers in kuwait never actually learnt HOW to drive (ie took classes, had their learners then full licence) this usually stumps them and traffic ensues.
Adding the extra lane will do nothing.
But I do like that idea someone mentioned about school buses. That would atleast cut down on the number of cars on the road.
