Permission to Tow

towhitch2

A contact sent me this random bit of information, it seems you now need to get permission to tow stuff with your vehicle. Previously anyone could just connect their jetskis or boat and just tow them down the road but they recently started cracking down on this by applying some new stricter rules. For example if you want to tow a trailer, then the trailer now must have reflectors, turn signals and brake lights on it as well or else you’ll get fined.

I guess this new towing permission is an extension of those new safety regulations. According to my same contact, if your car has a tow hitch (pictured above) you might get fined even if you aren’t towing anything. Not sure how accurate this information is, but if your car has a tow hitch then you might want to double check on this.

Thanks Fahad

Okay the permission to tow is fine for safety reasons but what about all the cars that come with a hitch from the factory?

well personally I hate them, have you ever seen what happens to a car that hits another car that has a tow hitch installed? Even if its a small bump the car in the back will pretty much get fucked.

I’ve heard the same thing, it is now illegal to have a random tow hitch sticking out. The cops can give you a ticket, I was going to put one on just in case someone rear ends me but alas I can’t do it now. Is it still illegal to paint cars with the matte color?

Nop its not, a friend’s car is matte and mercedes had a matte black car in their showroom. i don’t see why they had matte colours illegal.

my car has a bike rack at the back that connects to the towing ball, is that okay? it’s a company car also, not mine.

I got my car towed away and fined 15KD for having a tow hitch just last week. So that piece information you have at the end is pretty accurate!

For real? I need to get my hitch off asap but do not have the keys for it!

I have one aftermarket in the middle back. But there is also a another tow hook on the back right as well as two in front from the factory!

Was yours an aftermarket hitch or factory?

Factory from jeep, I have a wrangler. Ive had this car for 2 years now, went through countless of checkpoints, and been pulled over twice, never did anyone mention anything about the hitch. It was just this one cop. Just my lucky day I guess.

“Does the proccess involve “wasta””

–Offcourse this is Kuwait

“I can finish it myself in a DAY”

Offcourse NOT this is Kuwait

It was quite easy! I took my registration to the “khidmat al-mowatin” office and paid 2KD to get them to add the sentence and print out a new registration.

Agree with Fahad.

I got fined just for tow hitch on a tahoe without towing anything. But what about Patrol for example, its already fixed with standard tow hitch!

I was with a friend when a cop pulled us over and took his registration for having a tow receiver and was told that he had to get the car inspected and get a print out from the inspection office in order for the block to be taken off the registration and get it back. We asked the cop about the factory tow receivers on the new cars and how they were bolted onto the hitch and he didn’t have an explanation but he claimed it was ok for those vehicles to have them. (Honestly I don’t think he knew what he was saying!) The same night he was pulled over again on his way home and the other cop asked him for his registration and when he told him what happened he got his license revoked.

I was stopped on the Gulf road and told by the police officer that my car was ‘illegal’ because of the tow hitch. I told him that it was fitted to the car when i bought it and that maybe the police guy who did the dafta at the time should have put this on. so he let me go without a ticket but told me to go to Farwaniya to get it changed. I have no idea what this process involves, and haven’t had the time yet but I guess i’ll need to do it soon.

They should not be able to give you a ticket simply for having a tow hitch. you could have a basket on the back on your tow hitch that has some bags or a some bicycles. That is technically not towing, its carrying since the basket does not have contact with the ground. Towing means another object with wheels is being pulled.

I notice this peculiar tendency to solve the wrong problem because the right problem is slightly difficult to solve.

e.g.

1. Tow Hitch, anyone towing random stuff in an unsafe fashion should be fined heftily, problem solved.

Instead create confusion by banning the presence of a tow hitch

2. Begging on visit visa during Ramadan: Fine the sponsor of those visit visas heftily, problem solved.

Instead stop issuing visit visas during Ramadan

3. Visit visa holders getting free (!) medical treatment: Recover the full medical charges from the sponsor or insist on visitors having medical insurance, problem solved

Instead, have an arbitrary cut off on the age of visitors for visit visa.

I hope better sense prevails.
