On my way to Khiran yesterday I noticed a few of the speed cameras on the 30th had been rotated to face the front of the cars instead of the rear. I didn’t take a photo but a reader sent me the one above and told me he had spotted rotated cameras on the 5th, 6th and 7th Ring Roads as well.
At first I thought they might have something to do with the emergency lanes being available for the public to use but I don’t think thats the case anymore. I found rotated cameras on parts of the highway that didn’t have any emergency lanes so that theory didn’t work. My best guess now is they’ve just rotated some cameras so that people can start slowing down much sooner than before.
Thanks Dragos

They’ve even put emergency lights on the 60 probably for the emergency lane, and last night I even saw the camera elf working on the camera on 60 too. Hmmm..
people tend to memorize which way the camera operates so they turn them around regularly.
They do not turn them regularly. This is the first time that they’ve turned them around since they start pointing the cameras at the rear of the car years ago.
I’m very sure that this have been done before !! VERY SURE !!
shit .. I misread the entire post !! my bad lol ure right .. always right mark
Both Mark and UCF are right. No it is not done regularly but yes this was done before. This is the fourth change I can remember.
The main reason as I read that some drivers are deliberately removing their number plats and speeding. They want now to detect the faces of those in order to be able to identify them.
This is not true. We can see the VIN of the car. No need to identify the face.
how can you see the vin? isn’t the vin usually located inside the car and engine bay?
The VIN is located in many places. However he’s referring to the VIN on the bottom driver side corner of the windshield. Front facing cameras will be able to read that tiny vin number through the windhshield. However, there are many easy ways to cover that number or even change it. Google it ๐
You said ‘we’. Are you working for this evil company? And how can I be your best friend? No seriously, how?
lol… Cool story bro ๐ Only visible VIN from outside car is under windshield written with small letters and numbers and it’s even hard to read by eye when you are look at it from 10cm distance.
I think there are more cars on the road without a plate in front than the rear. And also there are cars with tints so dark, that they won’t be able to detect faces.
This was in the news a week ago- planning to rotate some cameras to face the front and some will continue to face the back.
I don’t think this will have a big impact on slowing distance. The hotzone for the camera is roughly 20 feet.

What about motorbikes?
They mentioned that they will rotate speed cameras from time to time in their press conference that was held to announce the emergency lane usage and regulations.

I think the main reason as to why they have been rotated to face the driver is for the sole reason that people started to notice the trick behind which direction that camera actually snaps you if you are speeding. Having it face forward and not getting that instant couple of seconds to notice the little grid mesh on the side of the camera unit is now practically impossible as you wont have time on approach to check and see
Not really. These same camera used to be forward facing in the past. It barely makes a difference in slowing down in time.
+1
Actually mark it is programmed to capture the speeders in the safety lane, i saw this in action today..
Be careful.
I remember when they were first installed, they were all facing the front of the car. After many accidents (mainly due to the flash which results in people hitting the brakes pretty hard) they rotated them so it photographs the rear license plate.
Adel Alhashash on of MOI announced it in newspapers ( Alanbaa ) a few days ago that they couldn’t identify many of the violators ( 22,000 violations or something ) because they have removed the back plate and they will make it face front for that reason.
I’m not sure if it is related to the safety lane or not though.
