4Sale Fixing the Housekeepers Category

Last week I posted about how the housekeepers category on the popular 4Sale website bothered me since they were basically allowing housekeepers to be sold like slaves (check the picture above). Someone at 4Sale definitely reads my blog since that same night they started cleaning up the housekeepers category. They removed all the posts where housekeepers were being sold in and introduced a new set of rules. When you now visit the housekeepers category on their website you get the popup below:

Roughly translated, the pop up says the following:

Dear customers, in accordance with the instructions from the cybercrime unit at the Ministry of Interior, please take into consideration the following points when posting advertisements in the housekeepers category:

– avoid posting pictures of the housekeepers or copies of their official documents
– avoid using the word maid and instead describe them as domestic workers
– you’re not allowed to mention their religion, skin color or price
– you’re not allowed to use the word for sale

Actually, now that I think about it, it’s possible that someone from the cybercrime unit actually reads my blog and not 4Sale. In any case, I still think more can be done by 4Sale. While browsing through the category I found a few posts that violated the new rules, but I personally think the whole category needs to be shut down anyway.

why is even such a category there ? i though u had to sponsor a domestic worker etc….. or get one from the agency .. and there was a trial period etc… anyway

The whole category needs to be shut down. Could you imagine if any other job had a place to sell their employees? For Sale: Science Teacher, only 1000kd! necessary for reimbersment for their flight here, rent and school supplies.

What a joke. Yes, its expensive to bring a maid. No, you don’t get that money back after their contract expires and you want to bring a new maid. If a job hires you, pays your expenses, they would never try to sell you to another job to get back the money spent they invested in you.

IF the ads posted are from the domestic worker themselves, and not their sponsor, and is free from coercion, is the only way that category could work.

Hi,

Whether it is on the app or on the website, this is slavery and nothing else can describe it being anything else. Come on now, what is being advertised on app or on website is a HUMAN BEING for crying out loud. Instead of removing the category from the app, the authorities need to take note of this and ban any advertising involving a HUMAN BEING.

Plain disgusting. These women may be poor and illiterate but no one save no one has the right to misbehave with them and violate them. They have families back home just like the rest of us and you are not being a good Muslim, if you permit such experiments in human trafficking on your home soil. Such activities more than Western entertainment or concerts are in-Islamic and totally unacceptable.

Where is that person that was upset about playstation and food eating posts and wanted more social justice and accusing you of being a part of the larger issue?

Good job Mark.

Their solution isn’t exactly ideal. Looks like the website is still advertising maids, and there will of course be an exchange of money in private, but I like how you’ve been able to make a change. Here’s to many more victories, no matter how small!
