Monstariam, Artspace and Red Bull recently teamed up to give talented artists in Kuwait a chance to win a trip to South Africa. They held a doodle art competition and the winner was chosen today and it was the doodle below by Mohamad Mayya. Mohamad will now be going to Cape Town where he will compete with other international artists for a chance to have their art put on a special edition Red Bull Can. Check out the video above on the competition.

By the way,

70% of local artists in the GCC are Kuwaitis

Most art in Dubai is done by foreigners

Look here https://www.arabtimesonline.com/NewsDetails/tabid/96/smid/414/ArticleID/158979/reftab/96/t/Kuwait-best-for-creative-potential-in-GCC/Default.aspx

Q: What are the challenges you face here in Kuwait as artists? Is there a difference between Kuwait and Dubai in terms of culture, in terms of acceptance for your art?

A: When we were doing our research for creatives in the region, we discovered that the largest percentage of creative potentials in the region is actually in Kuwait. In the whole of GCC, we would say that 70 percent are from Kuwait. And in the remaining 30 percent, probably 10 percent are from Dubai.

In Dubai, you will see that the media industry is really huge, but most of the stuff is done abroad. They are not done in Dubai by the locals. They are either outsourced from foreign companies or from the main branches of companies in Europe or other places.

Here in Kuwait you have a lot of raw potentials, who are working on their own projects. This is the reason why though our magazine was based in Dubai most of the creatives we featured were mostly from Kuwait.

Kuwait has the largest percentage of local artists in the GCC

The Kuwaiti government should do more to promote the arts scene

Kuwait is crawling with expat artists too – that outnumber the kuwaiti artists. We just aren’t trending, or hanging out at the usual spots, selling work for insane prices, or at expensive markets.

It’s unfortunate but Kuwaiti art often coasts through on limited talent and trending – or popular instagram accounts -ppl always going ‘mashallahhhhhh so amaaaaaaazing’. Seriously? not everything can be that amazing!

Monstarium is awesome of course as is Nizzy and quite a few ppl – i doubt anyone can disagree with that. Raw, professional, inspired talent. but the amount of low grade talent there that masquerades as art is staggering. art, and music, in kuwait is so pretentious. It should be about expression and feeling – not the materialistic bullshit that happens everytime something trends in Kuwait.

art is about the art, full stop. Except here its not

dude think about it … how many kuwaitis are there and how many expats? of course if you mean artists exhibiting work at galleries or with instagram accounts – sure thats true. But if you mean artists as in people who do art … there’s bound to be tonnes more expats. I mean in the Indian community alone I know there are hundreds …

Well expats do outnumber Kuwaitis, the vast majority work as labor, so that job environment makes it highly unlikely for them to be artists (artist is a very general word so I mean painters in this post). This makes it seem really unlikely to me that they outnumber Kuwaitis. But the only way to be sure is to do a count :p
