Score: Kuwait 2* – Dubai 1,385

My friend is in Dubai now and sent me this picture of a poster up at Mall of Emirates. Glad we don’t have a similar one up at the Avenues.

Here is the link to the full uncropped image [Link]

Some of visitors to dubai have no respect for the local culture. ppl (Emarati) have been complaining and the management of the mall wanted to address their concerns by putting up a simple sign. nothing wrong w/ that!!

Meh! That sign has been there since like the mall opened.

In any case, uncovered shoulders or knees are a NORMAL sight in the mall, on the other hand in Kuwait, there is no sign, but a woman would be looked upon like a SLUT.

More like Kuwait 0-1 Dubai

i think this is only mall of emarats thing. they wanted the mall to be similar to Kuwait’s Salhiya.. u know? classy shops with classy people? if u walk to mall of emarats right now its just like any other dubai attraction.. not classy at all.

i have seen another sign at the mall of emirates dictating that you should not be hugging or making out … glad they didn’t state that you shouldn’t be holding hands as well… i remember laughing about it cause plz… you cannot be hailed as the bar scene in the arabian gulf with the latest IT bars and wildest nightlife yet you ask people to cover up while shopping, esp. if pork and wine are in your grocery list!

Mark, UAE generally and Dubai specifically monitor internet and its users. By monitoring I mean, not anyone can get internet access (like in Kuwait you buy prepaid card from baqala), but you must sign up with your own phone line so they can track you back.

Dubai has a problem, basically its social collapse. Flickr was not blocked because of its content. It was blocked because of what Emarati girls been uploading.

You can give Kuwait another point for not monitoring our online activities.. it is constitutionally protected. In UAE, they even monitor your emails and text messages. Of course they do it in UAE for security reasons… ever wondered how come UAE arrest criminals in record time?

Yes in Kuwait we may have government departments browsing the internet and making reports.. but legally thats about it.

they also have a sign near the taxi pick-up place in dubai mall with a list of rules one of which no public displays of affection

strange how people get insulted or angry with this! this is the right thing! we are Muslims and that what we been taught!
I’m not a religious guy but I respect these stuff and never get offended.
“wely 3ala rasa ba67a e7ases 3aleha!”

wow, all this cause we have a sign that says wear respectable clothes… I see you guys have alot to keep you busy.
now i dont have time to answer all the stupid stuff i came across above but a quick one would go:
you cant get alcohol unless u have a license to buy and if you tell me it doesnt work then I’ll tell you at least we tried, alcohol in kuwait is simply illegal but widely used NOT in bars but in HOMES. hm yeah much better, way to go.

Mall of the emirates was NOT made for “classy” people if by classy you mean rich, i won’t even poke holes in that idiotic definition of classy, but anyway when you have jeenyfer and top shop as shops that doesnt mean they were targeting your definition of classy people. its a mall for all tastes n all people, unlike you over there, we dont have that moronic mentality where rich ppl do not mingle with the poor and even the ones that do have money dont necessarily go around wearing gucci to go buy milk, its not a fashion or beauty contest every minute of the day. get a life.

finally, “they didnt block flikr for its content” IF you are right about why it’s blocked, uploads ARE contents. You are So smart. Ofcourse that you said is right if your logic goes like that!

Any other issues i could respond too but honestly why bother? when you make it to where Dubai is we’ll see how well you fare 🙂

No more knees? Or shoulders? Oh but why, we were so seduced looking at those body parts, what are we gonna do now? Ok enough sarcasm, are they serious?

So you can be a prostitute, but don’t you dare wear a tank top to the mall?

I think Dubai should deal with the bigger issues here. It’s a shame, I keep hearing these stories and I used to be Dubai’s biggest supporter. After reading the link posted on the first comment, I’m not so sure they know what they’re doing anymore.

OMG they should write on for kuwait …. be respectful, no heavy makeup, no flouresent clothing and skirts ontop of jeans. its a fashion disaster in kuwait with some of the women, who actually are scary looking with ‘all they can throw on look’ LOL

What i find so contradicting is that women wear hijab, but plaster on face full of makeup, or they cover up but its skin tight clothing which really is not modest. I think this should be applied also LOL

FYI thats so funny LOL im in stitches of laughter where did you get that pic? thats so so so funny. im buyig it LOL

Dubai has always been and always will be a bad joke. It’s not even shit in a decent way, just really neutral and awful.

SWAiN, when you say ‘we are muslims’.. who do you mean by ‘we’? dont be so ignorant… not everyone are muslims.

if locals dont accept such clothing then visitors would automatically start acting based on whats locally accepted. Take Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Dubai as examples.. Even though there is no dress code in Kuwait, yet foreigners would never dress in such a way that they do in Dubai.. even though Kuwait is not as strict as Saudi Arabia (where they have Hay2a Police beating people for not getting dressed properly).

I think what is going on in Dubai (if its not just with Emarats Mall) they’re trying to make it a classy place.. right now when you go there its as if you’re visiting Thailand’s beaches during the summer! You’d see people dressed in a way that is not even accepted in much of the civilized Europe (parts of UK, Germany) and same with the US!

@Rasha

Calm down Rashoi! I may have misused the word classy or it may simply be a ‘cultural’ difference!

If anyone trying to act smart right now is you. As far as I’m aware this is not formal session, thus we are allowed to loosen up and not focus on every wording very much.

I would like to start with Flickr bit. Though I’m pretty sure you’re fully aware of what I meant, I will try to reword it for you. Flickr was not blocked because of its ‘sexual’ or ‘offensive’ contents or its ‘terms of use’ policy. Flickr was blocked in the UAE simply because some Emarati people abused the service by uploading ‘inappropriate’ contents.

Now, I understand that the UAE lacks ‘muwa6ineen’ and thus by me saying “Emarati” I mean people who live and act as locals.

Regarding “When you make it to where Dubai is…” comment. Lets be frank… Right now Dubai is where Kuwait WAS back in the late seventies/early eighties. The UAE generally and Dubai specifically is still developing and has a long way before it reaches equilibrium and starts to settle.

Just to make it clear for you, In the seventies Kuwait became fully independent of oil. It had investments in most major european business until at some point europe realized that Kuwait’s government can literally control some european economies through their investments (spain is one example, you google the rest).

Let us not talk about money and building. Sure, as Emarati girl this is probably the only think you know of, but let us talk about the true development.. which is development of people. And if you wish to compare which country is ahead of the other.. you compare its people development.

On one hand, and before you start eating me -bilsanich- I would like to express my admiration with what Dubai is doing for its youth. It is not a secret that Dubai is investing a lot on its youth. From my experience with other Emaratis, we are witnessing right now a new generation of young well educated and open minded emaratis that are succeeding in many aspects (science, sports, arts.. etc).

On the other hand, Kuwait has gone through this a long long time ago. We have at least three or four generations of well educated Kuwaitis, artists, athletics, politicians, and so on. You wouldn’t have such a thing in Dubai or UAE. Those people are the ones we are proud of.. and those people who -even though our failed politicians are ruining the country- will help the current generation to build its future.

Those previous generations of well educated open people have the precious values that future generations can not survive without. Its the identity of the country and its communities. The reason why I said Dubai is going through social collapse is because its new generations are loosing their identities. Its funny how they’re trying to hold on to the Emarati identity by making workers wear ‘kandora’ and girls wear ‘3abaya and sheila’.. but thats not true identity.. it has no values or anything.

A response such as yours would only come from an enthusiast young person. And as a young girl I will ask you.. how many guys and girls around your age are getting married from a foreigner? Don’t answer.. because I dont have all day to read your long list! But I prove my point.

I’m sorry for being rude to you.. but your response was just as rude to me as Kuwaiti. I can understand that you were offended by the responses of some people above. But then again, this is a Kuwaiti blog, with people in Kuwait posting in it. And for the record.. until your post showed up, no one was ‘bad talking’ Emaratis. The discussion was simply about Emarat Mall and Emarat’s policy.

sure dubai has lots of flaws, its biggest mistake is that to took too much debt and maybe thinking too much that it was much better than the rest. But seriously, no one can seriously believe that Kuwait is any better… Just visit our ugly downtown to know……
Just:
ba6il 3aynek o eqrah elmaktoob o la et9eer e7mar t`3ala6 3ala nas

The sign made no comment on gender. Interesting how so many people naturally assumed it was directed towards women!

Khafaw rabkom yaa jima3a… why do you become so aggressive towards your religion and culture… Whats wrong with being asked to dress decently and cover your shoulders and knees? Do you actually believe freedom is truly that shallow? has american ignorance and petty culture that much influence over you that you cannot understand and grasp the simple concept of freedom or that by telling you that you should not wear certain kinds of clothing contains or limits your freedom in anyway whatsoever? Do you think freedom has any relation to your materialistic and insignificant infatuation with fashion, cars, and sin. Laa taakhithkom il 3iza bil ithim.

hey Mark, I just wrote an ESSAY! Its still not shown! how come?! it shows Your comment is awaiting moderation. -_-

cool down (not really) guys…on lighter note, it just says to cover your shoulder and knees….what abt the rest…(bad joke….hmmmm)

I usually wear just a speedo when I do the shopping. I’ll have you know that I have handsome knees that everyone admires.

So I expect the management of the mall will go through all the stores and remove “disrespectful” articles of clothing for sale?

@ Rasha..

“when you make it to where Dubai is we’ll see how well you fare”..

point being: instead of gloating about the mirage of “success” that dubai has accomplished thus far, i’d get busy and search for another job in a country with a more stable economy =)

they have signs like this in other malls in the uae too! i dont think people care about it. whats disturbing is twice in the same week i saw women breastfeeding in the mall!! all the men were just staring at her, and i was completely shocked.. lol we even went as far as reporting her to security.

well her whole boob was hanging out!! it was really to protect her from all that unneeded male attention.. even in europe women use breast pumps and feed their babies from bottles when they are on the move! it wasnt something you would expect in dubai.

TABOO ALL OVER!CONTROL FREAKS!>>> SUCH HIPOCRITICAL SOCIETIES, LET PEOPLE BE!!! JUST LIKE THEY LET YOU BE WHEN YOU GO ABROAD, TO THE DANCING CLUBS,WITH THE BABES,WITH YOUR ALCOHOLIC DRINKS,WITH YOUR BELIEFS. IT’S REALLY SIMPLE, JUST TAKE CARE OF YOUR OWN SOUL!!REPORTING A FEEDING MOTHER…(THAT ONE TOOK THE CHERRY ON TOP)AND SEOULDOUT >> I LIKE UR SPEEDOS BUT MOST OF ALL UR KNEES–LOLOLOL, DONT GO TO DUBAI UAE>> THEY MIGHT RAPE U…

Dubai might look nice, but Dubai is the palestine of the gulf. Foreign invasion, yet the average dubai citizen does not have a say in how his/her country is run and on top of that they don’t benefit as you might think. Most of them complain about what going on. And to apease some of their fustration, they put up a few “respect local traditions” sign. That’s as far as it goes.
Dubai is a nice place to visit, but hardly any kuwaiti would want to live there. Kuwait doesn’t want to go down that path. Kuwaits economy is for kuwaitis, unlike dubai.
