AJ’s Food Truck

Over the weekend I got to try AJ’s Food Truck and although I didn’t think much of the food I do love the idea of food trucks and I hope it catches on (and I’m guessing it will). With AJ’s Food Truck you have two options, you can either book them to come over with their truck and cater to you and your friends or you could follow them on Instagram and keep an eye out for when they park their truck somewhere so you could go and find them.

AJ’s Food Truck is a burger truck with a menu consisting of two kinds of burgers, a steak sandwich and a chicken burger. They also have sides like fries, onion rings and chicken tenders as well as drinks. But food trucks can of course be more than just burger trucks and I’d love to see a Chinese or Mexican food truck roaming around Kuwait.

Food Trucks don’t really make sense in Kuwait imo although it’s a cool idea. Nobody walks anywhere, everything delivers, and we have loads of tasty “street food” all over the place it’s just in shabby shawarma and kebab places instead of literally on the street.

I’d like to know how do you get a commercial license or permit for a food truck? Is there such a license or are they operating without one?

you cannot operate without one. You have to have a license for a restaurant with a physical address (store or shop) and then operate trucks with that license. There is no license only for food trucks.

What about those trucks selling ice cream? Do they have a physical address? Or, how about those mobile “baqallas” I’ve seen in Bnaider?

Pinkberry and the like have trucks. I think the license situation as someone said above is you classify the truck as a delivery truck, have a physical store somewhere else, but still make food in the truck.

They have a “lobster roll” truck that goes around the Washington DC area. They only sell lobster sandwiches at $15 each. People follow them on Facebook and Twitter (like other specialty restaurant trucks) to see where they will be next for lunch. Lines have been as long as 2 hours.

This is a FABULOUS idea for Kuwait (especially now that the camping season is coming up). I didn’t know the municipality allowed them (?) But then, with only like 5 inspectors, who is gonna check?

It seems like the only way small businesses can make any money in Kuwait is in the food service industry.

No it’s just the first idea everyone in Kuwait has. “I should make a business… do you think it should be cupcakes or burgers?” Loads of restaurants, even the big franchise ones, bleed money while the safer, less glamorous businesses plod along.

Also the lobster roll truck works because the food is good enough that people will wait an hour for a $15 sandwich, the food has to be there first before the concept. Also nobody is waiting in the sun for an hour in Kuwait, even in the winter 😛

Mark, I would love to read a post or response from Fajer about the laws and licenses needed to run a food truck business in Kuwait.
