Eggslut Now Eggslot?

The Eggslut hoarding went up a few days ago and it looks like it’s now been changed with the one above where they’ve covered the “u” in the word slut with an egg. Doesn’t look like they’re actually going to call the place Eggslot or else they would have already gotten the @eggslot account on instagram and the accompanying domain names.

Below is the first hoarding they had up:

Out of curiosity for those of you who were offended by the name Eggslut, if they do end up calling it Eggslot does that make it ok for you? Even though you know the name of the place is actually called Eggslut and they just replaced the letter “u” with an “o”? What if they added letters so for example they decided to call it Eggslutkt or maybe Eggslud, would that also be ok with u?

I assume the official name will remain Eggslut, but the logo will ‘suggest’ Eggslot.

So does the argument between those who thought the name would be a problem and those who didn’t end in an honourable draw?

You’re making it seem as if this is just a Kuwaiti issue, but the word slut is banned from being publicly displayed in businesses in Australia and the UK. So this is not a sensitivity issue its a decency issue, having the word slut displayed in a business is not decent.

Can you provide a source for that claim about the UK / Oz?

In the UK there is FCUK; Knobs and Knockers; Fuckoffee (the landlord made them to change the sign, it now reads F*ckoffee).

Let’s not forget “fucking fabulous” by tom ford which was on a bus in London, “Better than sex” make up, most of the clothing at Selfridges. I mean with tv shows like naked attraction and love island that imaginary law just wouldn’t make sense.

To answer your question to those of use offended by the name; Yes its okay with me if the name is changed to Eggslot, and the special is called The Slot. It is no longer offensive. I don’t get your point about the name of the place being really eggslut, when its obviously not. The name will be slot and everything will reflect that. Its like saying Texas chicken in Kuwait is not really called Texas chicken.

Really? So even though you know the name is called eggslut and the franchise is called eggslut but just because you’re super sensitive they’re gonna censor it and call it eggslot you’re now ok with it? So its just the letter u that was offensive?

When you gloat, expect it to be thrown back at you!

“For those of you who didn’t believe me or think no way a place called Eggslut would be allowed to open in Kuwait, well, I was right.”

No you were wrong, thankfully.

you understand right that eggslut is still opening in kuwait, the name got changed, but deep inside you still know that when you chomp on their food the money will go to a company whose name offends you so much. LOL.

I’m not super sensitive, but the word slut is demeaning. I don’t think it becomes a better word by just making it sound cool.
When you look at it from a community point of view, doesn’t great.
Wondering if anybody would be cool with a franchise name like ‘Gass Hole’

I’m neither super sensitive nor am I religious. It’s about decency. That’s an okay name for a bar or nightclub, not a family breakfast joint.

I agree,

Personally, i couldn’t care less of the naming, but if i’m walking pass by that joint and my kids start to ask questions, it would be awkward to explain how does a bad word end up publicized in a Muslim country.

Don’t get me wrong, we do encounter some questions when we travel but the answer is easy, “it’s not a Muslim country and it’s a bad word” End of discussion.

Clever Save.

What would they ask? “What is Eggslut?” The answer is simple, someone who loves eggs a lot.

It’s really not that bad.

It’s not even in the same ballpark because the word “slut” is used to describe someone who loves something a ridiculous amount. Anthony Bourdain once described himself as an “egg slut” because of his love of eggs. It’s a term I can use with friends when they get obsessed with a certain thing.

The word “slut” used to be a derogatory term but it really isn’t anymore.

Its exactly the same. Faggot means cigarette in UK and is also a pejorative. Slut falls in the exact same category.

It is not the same. Not even in the same ballpark.

You can’t use that term in a positive light while the term “slut” isn’t what it meant in the past and its been repurposed. While the term you’re using will always have a negative connotation because of its history and the homophobic nature of it.

Its not just the same ballpark, its the same row and aisle in the bleachers! You can the term in a positive way to mean cigarettes. While the term you’re using will always have a negative connotation because of its history and whore-ophobic nature of it.

Just out of curiosity.. if you kid comes and tells you dad I’m a slut for ______ (feel free to fill with anything). you’d be fine with it?

They wont be asking what eggslut means, they know the word egg and can recognize the illustration, but “slut” is what they will be wondering about, and if i do what you suggest and explain to them in that manner, it wont be long till i hear “Dad, im such a slut for some chocolate”.

Gotta watch your steps when it comes to kids, they’ll learn it eventually… but not on your watch 😛

And if I return to Kuwait with my kids and they start to ask questions while we are passing by that joint… I too would say ‘It’s a bad word’.

Telling my kids something along the lines of ‘it’s not a Muslim country and it’s a bad word’ would imply to them that non-Muslims tend to use derogatory terms. Religious affiliation doesn’t affect the level of usage of derogatory terminology.

I dont see much sense in comparing the 3D printing shop with the word slut. Theyre on two different sides of the “offensive” spectrum, even out of it. I don’t care much about the name eggslut, its just a name. Its the food that ill be going for at the end of the day and I think most people will be outraged now but going to try the food either ways and maybe even become regulars. That’s my perspective. If I look at it from an overall societal/cultural standpoint, I do see why its considered derogatory and cheap to use Slut especially in a culturally-preserved family-oriented country it’s almost disrespectful in a way. Like Burger Bitch or Cheese Whore wouldnt be an uncomfortable name for families to eat at? Ofcourse it would be. Its the exact same thing. Anyway don’t brands usually adapt to the culture or try to localize? But then again, its just a name and we move on.

You are very right. Historically, it was the conservatives that were bullies now bullies are on both sides. You can have an educated conversation without people attacking you. There are things are are tolerated in parts of the states which aren’t in other parts. People have the option of moving around. At the end of the day, speaking as a “foreigner” and son a Kuwaiti woman, Kuwait and Kuwaitis all have the right to be offended by anything they want. Those who don’t have kids don’t understand censorship, most people here, including myself and Mark, don’t have kids and are only taking care and being selfish. I worked in an ISP in Kuwait and my job was actually censoring websites, I didn’t agree with it but I did understand the point of view of parents. Again, censorship is something I don’t agree with 100 percent, but culture and respect are. We childless people tend to be selfish doesn’t mean we can’t try to understand.

I don’t think it’s being selfish, eggslut isn’t opening in Disney Land and they’re not trying to target children so you can’t keep talking about it as if it’s a children’s place opening up in discovery mall.

It’s not opening up in Disney Land but it is opening up in a public place. Thats the fact that you are not understanding nor respecting. . Censorship is a bit too much understood but many countries have their preferred way of doing things. Like here in Canada they are banning vape flavors that sound too inviting to kids like Cotten candy. And that’s Canada. I hate when Kuwait gets attacked and not respected for being different. And yes people would be ok with it being changed even when the main company has a different name. Companies need to adapt and the biggest and most successful ones do. McDonald’s doesn’t sell pork in the middle East, it doesn’t even sell beef patties in India and it’s a burger joint! Brands need to adapt and respect. And people living in those countries be it foreigners or locals who have traveled and lived abroad need to know that places are different. The thumbs up sign means good things in most of the world but it’s the middle finger in Iran. Even the laughing cow cheese in French means penis in Iran. I don’t understand why people try to make connections between things that have no correlation. Maybe it’s the frustration that everything is censored like that 3d printing or some books but slut is distasteful and humiliating word towards women. It’s insulting to me if I were in Kuwait or on the moon. I’m an open-minded guy but I think it’s a word that should not be in a shopping mall. What’s next burgercunt!

I think you’re confusing things here if you’re comparing McDonald’s selling pork to a store name that isn’t what you think it means.

Eggslut as people have already mentioned just means you like eggs a lot, it doesn’t mean what you think it means because your definition is of the word slut and so not applicable in this context.

But we could play that game as well. You do know what Air means in Lebanese right? Does that mean we should ban nikes or brands from using the word air in their name? The bearings brand Fag is sold in Kuwait and we have a Fag store in Shuwaikh, should that be closed down because fag has another meaning?

These conversations go back and forth with both sides having valid points. I appreciate your input and you are entitled to your own opinion. To me, the word is insulting regardless what it means. You do have point about the word air and I did not know that it meant egg a lot. Still I think since it is offensive to me then it will be to many others and it won’t be insulting to some others. They changed the name of store here in Canada which was called fags and mags because people from the LGBT community felt insutled and rightfully so. Again we can go back and forth all day and both have valid points. My issues is, I’ve been following this blog long before there was much on it and I’ve appreciated it very much and will also do. I just was offended by the way you asked the question (which is something unlike you) as if it’s wrong to be offended by a name of a store. And again, I don’t think I’m the only one that was offended by the way the question was asked. Anyway thanks for sharing.

Marketing is your field man. Won’t try to understand it. Thanks for clarifying your intention. If it matters all to you I didn’t appreciate the mocking not the tone. But it’s your blog man.

The way you asked the question mark is a bit condescending. At the end of the day it’s about respect. The translation of the word in Arabic is distasteful even though many of my friends use the Arabic version. Many people wouldn’t want their kids to say, I’m going to egg slut mom. just because we all speak English doesn’t mean that’s not a different place or a different culture above all respect is important

honestly as an adult I don’t care about the word but I do understand people who find it offensive. Like the word ‘fuck’ isn’t used quite literally. ‘oh fuck’ when you are in pain or “fuck that’s good’ when you like something. But, it is still inappropriate word and a curse word. Just because Eggslut is supposed to mean someone who loves egg doesn’t take away from the fact that slut is inappropriate. Does ‘eggslot’ make it any better? not really but at least the company acknowledges that it will offend some people. It’s a good move! not stupid at all to keep everyone happy!

And I respect it doesn’t offend you. That’s fine. You are right it doesn’t change things but it’s the correct thing to do. People keep comparing other parts of the world to Kuwait, Lebanon, California where ever but honestly I realized that some people just are not allowing Kuwait to have it own culture and its way of life.

That’s very much point. It may no offend some people but it does others and what I notice sometimes is that many people don’t allow Kuwait to have its own culture or views. Comparing Kuwait to Lebanon or California isn’t the right thing to do.

It isn’t but brands and restaurants must adapt to the people. I’m actually very surprised that the company who brought took such a risk. I know they will need to change and it might be too late for them. I mean even the biggest loser changed to the biggest winner when it came to the middle East. Or movie like gods of Egypt were renamed.

Censorship is not culture and with eggsult it isn’t censorship, it’s using that word in this culture is offensive. Just like how the NFL red skins are offensive to the natives of America. It means nothing to us but it’s a racial slur to them . Man my thumbs are getting a work out today :p

Mark your such a baby, you’re too depressing lately, man this is not your diary. I suggest you get one, and start writing better posts here. Youre making a big deal about a name, you just keep calling it slut if it makes you feel better and move on. Please shed light on more important stuff and quit crying over silly stuff. Ita offensive to most here, wht is it offending you. Did you come up with the name? (mocking you like you mock your readers. Btw a very bad move, whats wrong with you man)

who cares?

Slot or Sl*t it’s the rules of the country to be used that way or not, and in the end this wont effect us in real life, it will be just be funny, but it will effect the kids to say slut alot and use it as a reference.

just like how people disliked that cafe called N**ER in other regions or something forgot the name but saw it in a post, I guess people dislike the word sl*t in this region.

like many games you have a button to censor words, and censorship in this country might as well be on/off on certain things or always on.

And again no real life effect to us in real life, the only effect I would see would be on the kids that’s it.

I don’t find it offensive at all. I think women might find it offensive, idk, I’m not a woman and I don’t intend to represent a sex I am not part of (like men that say women feel safer in hijabs eventhough they never ask for the concerned sex’s opinion). Due to my sexual preference I wouldn’t be offended by the word f** because it’s just a word. I think we all learnt at age 4 that sticks words will never hurt us. My only issue and literally my only issue is the children, I don’t want kids using foul language at a young age (atleast not mine), by the point where they are mature enough to understand I’d let swear all they want.

To be honest, it’s a stupid name. Not for Kuwait or because people here are sensitive.its a stupid name with a derogatory term, even for a western country.

Then why write an article about the name, obviously its a big deal to you or this just means you right topics that mean nothing to you.
Then my advice is write articles that mean something to you (since you said its no biggie to you) , maybe only then your blog will get better again.
Ps youre losing people, i quit reading your blog. But unfortunately i overheard this article and had to give you some advice, and hopefully disappear again

I wrote about the name because as you can clearly see it’s a cause of debate and I like debating.

Ps: I could care less about losing or gaining readers and anybody who knows me personally knows that about me.

I write what I want, about whatever I want, and that’s been the case for the past 15 years. You might not like what I write about but other people do, that’s life, I’ll never satisfy everybody. So you can come and go as you please, I’ll be here doing what I do.

I think it’s important to use your platform to NOT stir up controversy BEFORE anything has happened. If you hadn’t addressed how the name wouldn’t be accepted in your previous blog posts and basically getting everyone hyped up and counting the clock on some official to throw an outburst, then they wouldn’t have had to change the name.. You basically had some hand in this by gaining traction on the so-called shock value of the name Eggslut which I’m sure the majority of people don’t find offensive. Stop dangling bait and then get upset when they fall for it. Food for thought ….

One of the things I like about my platform is the debating. I like reading other peoples opinions and debating people with different ones. So thats not gonna change..

Anna’s right, if you want a debate, then don’t be upset with what people have to say when they say it.

It’s ludicrous for Anna to say Mark had a hand in it. Everyone who read the name thought it. Mark just has a platform to write it down. If he wouldn’t have mentioned something about the name, someone would have in the comments.

I mean Mark can post about a new socks and tie shop and in the comments section it can suddenly turn into how ties and red socks are haram and move into culture ending with get out if you don’t like it.

I’m just happy it’s opening here. Really liked them in LAX.

Also, glad you brought out a debate on this. It was enlightening to read people’s views on this.

I’m not one to be offended by very much at all. But, with the current political climate in the US, I view the name as demeaning. When the food truck and the restaurant initially opened, it wouldn’t have been a big deal. But now, we women are taking a very strong stance and demanding respect in ways we never have before. While I highly doubt we’re going to be protesting the name of Eggslut anytime soon, it would be so incredible if they changed it as a way to show support for women.

As for the Kuwait location — make food, people eat.

I like my eggs cooked, fried, sunny side up, omelette, boiled, scrambled, with cheese, with mushrooms, sometimes with coriander.

I am a male. I am an eggslut.

You’re missing the point.
