Say Cheese

I was walking to any ATM machine down the street from my place in Salmiya when I noticed an army of at least 20-30 cleaners busy cleaning the street. I was thinking to myself damn thats impressive, they’re finally giving a damn about Salmiya. So I head over to the ATM and on my way back I notice the scene above. Turns out the only reason all these workers were in my neighborhood cleaning was because of a PR maneuver. Useless!

I saw about 50 yesterday near pizza hut on balajat street plus about 20 or so machines sort of like vacuums and about 20 small cleaning trucks…
What’s up with that?

These guys are more professional and standing close to cars during traffic hoping they’ll get tipped for doing nothing than they are cleaning

OH PLEASE! The guy down my office makes 15 – 25 KD a day on tips pretending to sweep by along stopped cars in traffic! Do the math!

wow that’s amazing that you have such an intricate knowledge of his finances! :O – are you an x-men?

Even more amazing is the extrapolating of this super power to the experiences of ALL street cleaners in Kuwait. You are truly a miracle man!

talk to your local street cleaner and treat them like your friend, you will find out much more about them and realize that most of them are satisfied and will go back home after a few yrs happy with what they’ve made here

Do you have a maid? How much do you pay your maid? I’ve seen people that pay their maid 60KD a month then give tips to these guys. Maybe pay the people doing actual work for you better first

unless this is said ironically – I have to laugh. I’ve heard ‘generous’ kuwaitis talking about how they are soooooo giving and i was genuinely astonished at their perceptions of themselves.

Lol yeah I was joking, I pay my maid 1000 KD, and she provides me with food, internet and sometimes she buys me a video game.

I saw it as well, from my office window.
It was a crazy, 15 cleaning cars and 20 -30 cleaners. We were waiting for a client when it happen and thought he must be mighty important since they clean the street so well for him… hehehhe
ps. I have a video of it.

You think it was staged?!! Or some overseer trying to impress his boss. Your client got impressed, go and thank them for that. I have seen people throwing coins at the as if they were monkeys. I have seen many more generous also, stopping and offering water or some food. Mixed bag, what you think of them as … a vermin or essential services.

We take care of “our” street cleaner – he’s been cleaning by our home for at least 5 years. We give him a little bit every month, and then on holidays a bigger bonus. We also know his name, my son will talk to him about Bangaladesh (where he is from), and we give him sweaters/hat/mittens when it is cold. I like to think we are helping to make his not-so-pleasant job a bit more bearable.

Jesus man – you are a dying breed. Wish more people thought like you… instead we whine about people who do labour we wouldnt be caught dead doing.

My nanny used to eat with the family, received half of my income, used to get 3 days off a week and I gave her a gym membership for a year. I used to feel guilty for not giving her enough because she looked after my most precious gifts: my children. My mother thought I was absolutely mad. She was a conservative Kuwaiti woman who didn’t trust “the help”. Our nanny worked hard to look after our kids while I worked away and I valued all her efforts. I’m trying to get into a university overseas and pay for some of her tuition as a thank you.

While it’s very decent of you to put all of that in for your maid – and also very healthy to be aware of your own privileged life… you have to also have to fully see your nanny as a human. Don’t turn her into a God or a demon. People in Kuwait seem to think that changing the language from ‘maid’ to nanny suddenly means people are doing better. Then the moment a maid steals, or has a boyfriend or whatever – suddenly they are no longer human and all the rape, abuse, locking up, taking passports is suddenly justified in their minds.

Yes you might have understandings on what is allowed and not allowed of a woman that works in your house but… to expect a maid/driver to not make normal human decisions will always end up going wrong. Your treatment of her seems really awesome – but extend that to the idea that she is allowed to make mistakes and is STILL worthy of your good treatment. In turn its her job to accept that you are worthy of hers.
