I need another Drobo

Anyone know who sells Drobo’s in Kuwait? I previously got mine from Amazon but paid around KD40 for shipping back in 2009 which mean it would probably cost me KD50+ with the current Aramex prices. 3gghead Electronics in Baitak Tower used to sell the Drobo for a good deal but they shutdown a long time back.

If you want to know what a Drobo is you can check out their [Website]

Update: Ended up picking up the Synology DS1511+ from Blink. They’re selling them for cheaper than Amazon [Link]

Na nothing beats the Drobo’s upgrade as you go feature, with most raid devices like the Synology. Once its setup it stays like that, if you want to swap in a bigger drive or add a new one you have to setup everything over again.

Got 2 Drobo FS’s on my network, love them 😀 Btw that number you were just given, I called before and unless their prices have changes, that 40KD shipping is a bargain considering the price he gave me before lol. I don’t recall exactly what it is but I do remember I calculated it and Drobo FS plus shipping from Amazon was around 50KD cheaper than getting it from them. It could have changed now though.

Nevermind, apparently you can build hybrid raid on the Synology which allows you to add drives as you go. Its very good apparently.

Will Drobo work as a “Time Capsule” for Time Machine? Ever since Lion my NAS will no longer work as a Time Capsule. Its a common problem with many drives.

I use the Synology DiskStation DS212j with two 2 TB disks (total 4 TB). I bought it from Amazon and I’m quite happy with it. It synchs with all wireless devices including Iphone, Ipad, Ipod, laptop. I can play 720p movies stored on it on my Iphone. I have all my music, pictures and videos in it and I can access them even when I’m outside Kuwait. It’s quite amazing especially when you consider the price.

I use a system of Live Books from WD and have been happy with price and performance. Also have the WD Live TV Hub which now will alos act as a stand alone Sling Streamer.

Mark feedback on the boot up time and network access as well as how loud is the unit once everything running in comparison to the Drobo FS

I bought a link station 2tb x 2 =4 td.
I set mine up as a raid 2tb system then a disc failed so I had to send the unit back for replacement, Hence I had to buy another 2tb drive to copy the data to else I would have to loose all my data.

Bottom line I had to backup the raid back up….

On top of that the share function over the Net never worked even with lots of time spent on the phone with tech support. Keeping in mind I am a MCSE and computer savvy.

Don’t buy link station

can some please give a brief summary of what this Synology.. Drobo.. frodo.. is..? im feelin really lazy to check that site out n read what it is… thanks!

I have the Synology DS 1411 (using synology hybrid raid). If you are utilizing the extra functionality of the DS4 OS it is light years ahead of the Drobo. I would highly recommend setting up a DDNS and getting the music streaming services up and running. Also nabbing the third party Plex server and turning into your media hub. You will not regret buying a real NAS over the Drobo. (I’m assuming from the picture it is the USB2.0 Drobo).

I read about those services but since I already have a server that handles the audio/video streaming and everything else I really just need did for backup.

Mark can you review or give us your impression on the device?
How reliable is it?
The last thing you want is the device crashing , losing all of my data

I haven’t set up the Synology yet but I can tell you my Drobo has been great. I originally started off with 4×1.5TB drives and upgraded them one by one until they became 4x2TB and didn’t run into any issues. Also have it connected to my Mac Pro using FW800 so speed is always stable and decent. I’m looking forward to see how the Synology performs specially since I will be connecting it via the gigabit ethernet.

I’ve been using the Drobo 4 bay classic for years with no problems. Had power supply issues but found and bout a couple of 3rd party ones on amazon. I love the fact that you can mix and match and not being restricted to all same size drives.
