A Blog of a Domestic Worker in Kuwait

nana

Back in September when I posted about Abdulai (the school teacher from Ghana), I had a feeling we would be hearing a lot more similar stories. With more people having access to smartphones and internet, I was confident more people would come forward to share their story. Then last week I got the following email from a domestic worker in Kuwait:

Journalism have been one of my passion since childhood but I had these infantile reasoning that being into journalism might also mean you re signing your death warrant.I have witnessed some renowned journalists being killed and other being put into prison custodies with out persecution but that doesn’t move me to give up on ma dreams of becoming one the worlds finest journalists. To be frank this blog has motivated and inspired me a lot.You have given me the reason why I shouldn’t give up on ma dreams I always say “HARDWOR AND DETERMINATION LEADS TO SUCCESS” .Am an African working in Kuwait as a househelp an I will really fight hard to accomplish my dreams when my contract is over

So after a bit of back and forth by email, I convinced her she didn’t have to wait and that she could start writing from now. I told her she should start a blog and I explained to her how she could set one up and be able to post articles from her phone. So she did that and got back to me today to let me know that not only was she able to set up her blog but she had also posted her first post. I’m not sure how often she will be updating the blog, she told me she will try to whenever she is free but in any case its still a big step forward. So check out her post and story on how she ended up in Kuwait by clicking [Here]

Mark, is there any way we readers could help her with her sponsor and help her terminate her contract early. It’s really sad she has to go through this suffering.

This is my first comment in years. I just want to say that you are doing great things here. Don’t ever stop.

Aside from all the ephemeral things of life like gadgetry, restaurants, sports, shoes etc., it is the coverage of human suffering in any form and championing the cause for the underdogs in small ways like this is why I return to this website often.

You do a good job Mark and someday when this country become a better place for commoners / expats than what it is now, a small ounce of credit will be yours.

Dear Mark,

I am working as a maid in Kuwait, i am going through a lot here and am scared i might go crazy or die here. Luckily i am able to get my passport from where my boss kept it, i have a sister in Dubai and she made a visit visa for me in Dubai and will buy a return ticket for me in Air Arabia.

My question is that, having my visa and air ticket to dubai with my passport, do you think they can stop me at the airport and inform my boss that am leaving the country without her consent?

please let me know, am so desperate and scared that the workers at the Kuwait airport might stop me from traveling since my visa is a maid kadama visa.

Regards
Fatou

Thank you Mark for the swift response,

I cannot ask my embassy here that is the reason why I am in this platform

All I wanted to know is that, can they stop me at the airport if an abscound case has not yet been filed against me?

Will the airport workers stop me just because I have a made visa? Even if there’s no complain about me yet
