Local group OXAdventure is heading to Rwanda this August and want to collect as many laptops as they can. They want to give the laptops to the students so that instead of three or more students sharing the same computer, every individual student would have their own to use freely.

I am sorry but i have seen and heard many huge charity organisations who talk big big and end up eating all the charity shamelessly !! Till date if not less billions of dollars have been sent to these countries but nevertheless they still the same !! where is tat money going and if its going to these ppl then why no progress ! I know few individuals who do charity work and visit these places and take care of things then i wonder why these huge organisations dont do in this similar way why their money never reaches !! Its an ugly truth !
Dude, they`re asking for used laptops. I doubt they will make some big money by reselling or recycling your old laptop. I`ll be concerned more about privacy (be sure you do a good wipe/format of your HDD, use some specialized software).

I am one of the volunteers going on this trip, rest assured we will visit the university students and deliver the laptops to personally and rennovate the homes ourselves. Look up who OXadventure is and what work they do it would have spared you the trouble of the writing of this paragraph. Its a lovely cause and they’re going a great job at reminding us of the importance of lending a hand. Best of luck OX

My main concern would be privacy. Even if you format the HD, a skilled computer programmer can retrieve your files. The only way to protect against that is to physically remove the HD, but this would render the laptop useless. I am not saying this will happen, but it is a legitimate concern.
That’s not the only way.
The solution to that issue is when you format to tell it to write 0’s. This writes 0’s over the empty data and destroys the empty space. It’s completely irreversible.
On Mac computers, its in Disk Utility and under security options.
On Windows computers, you have to boot to the system repair disk and put in a command in the command prompt to do the same thing.
Active KillDisk has a free utility, can be bootable too
