It’s the only mall I can get lost in and now it’s going to get even bigger since they just approved expanding it by adding a new fashion avenue. I previously heard that when phase 4 of the Avenues gets completed, it would end up being larger than Dubai Mall. I doubt that’s true. [Link]

Totally disagree, QABAQ! I think the Dubai Mall is the best mall in the world and getting bigger, WOW! Only in Dubai can they do things right! If only Kuwait would pick up the phone and call the UAE to assist this nation with implementing EGATE, networking ministries with car dealerships, car registrations and insurance in one ministry, how to increase transparency in your government channels and finally how to overhall ministries so that doing business with ministries would be less arduous. Very simple, just pick up the phone and I am sure the gratious Emiraties would assist Kuwait in restructuring the country. You need assistance to get out of this gridlock you have created. The Avenues could only dream of the food traffic the Dubai Mall gets through tourism.
One thing I love about Dubai Mall is how everyone is so helpful. From the information desk people to shop employees, everyone is always ready to help you out and it never looks like a bother to them.
That’s because tourists are generally respected.
Yeah, same thing at the metro stations. The policemen especially will help you out if you’re new to the place.
I prefer Dubai Mall for one thing:

Agree, Amazing bookstore!!! I can’t go to the Dubai Mall without going to this bookstore. Do you know that they have a website and will deliver to Kuwait and other neighboring GCC countries? Not sure what happens when your books get to customs though? Kuwait REALLY needs to get a handle on their censorship, it is unrealistic and unacceptable in a modern society. Because the UAE is a more conservative country than Kuwait, if ANY book or magazine is sold in the UAE which goes through their censors, it should be legal in Kuwait.

Phase 4 isn’t the last part of the Avenues expansion though.
in the avenues there is no seats to rest …specially for the eldery unlike dubai mall there are seats everywhere plus much more variety and there isnt much repetitve stores i.e 15 starbucks + 15 bodyshops +15 boots etc etc..
The key difference is entertainment. Malls all over the world realize that entertainment is key in the success of a mall. This is where the Avenues fails, they need to bring it up a notch. I saw this lame candy competition at the Avenues last week-end by Carrefour and people were going nuts. It wasn’t really done well and the girls at the booth weren’t even that attractive, but I conclude that people here are starved for entertainment. Entertainment brings foot traffic and foot traffic boosts sales. Another problem that Mark highlighted on is customer service, the CS in Dubai Mall or most malls in Dubai is excellent because there is a highly competitive market place. But actually speaking, it is a fact that Emirates Mall has higher sales than Dubai Mall. Also, Dubai Mall does an excellent job of supporting it’s shops by advertising. All wall space is utilized to increase the customer foot traffic throughout the mall. Apart from telephone companies, I don’t see the Avenues trying to lure customers upstairs and I bet the shops in hidden areas and upstairs are not doing very well. You have to continually engage the customer and entice them to buy your product and marketing/advertising is very important. There is no way that Al-Shaya’s sales are higher in Kuwait.

The Avenues will always be better because of its shoppers/guests ;p
DM is a world class establishment with a lot of variety and stores.
ex: There are 3 Starbucks in total vs the 25 in Avenues.
Avenues could be world class, but the problem lies with the fact that Al Shaya controls the leasing and nullifies threats to his business.
It’s like the old classic religion / politics mixing argument.
I would like to have seen how this mall turned out had Al Shaya not taken a controlling interest a few years back.
