Free Food for People Who Need it

re:food is a local humanitarian non-profit initiative, with the basic concept to salvage near-expiry and excess food from the local food and beverage industry, and then redistribute it around Kuwait to people who need it for free. Usually, these food items are either categorized as waste so they go directly to incinerators and landfills, or to secondary markets where they sell near-expiry goods.

When they first started, beneficiaries were originally found by scouting different areas, talking to people and giving them goods to build off trust. Then once word of mouth got around to what they were doing, individuals started heading to the re:food website to register to get food. The re:food beneficiaries are a diverse group of people that include Arabs, Bedouns, and Asians.

Good job reporting on this non-profit initiative. It’s better to omit the last sentence listing ethnicities of beneficiaries.

What information does it add to the reader? It just signals out, even stereotypes 2 ethnicities and 1 class of people as receiving charity. Could make readers belonging in these classifications uncomfortable.

the information it adds is that their beneficiaries are from different ethnicities and not just one specific kind which is what people always assume (Asians). I am an Arab and that information did not make me uncomfortable so its fine.

That was already cleared up by mentioning they are a diverse group.

I am stating the obvious here. I am a fan of your blog and appreciate your work. But I can’t help but recall your article about the Avenues wifi “Does Nationality Really Matter?” raising the same issue. I feel we have been so conditioned in this country to expect origin and race identification everywhere.

This is your blog and article and you can do anything you want with it at the end of the day. Nothing personal.
