Local Tap Water Wins Again

Last summer I posted about how tap water is safe to drink even though the general consensus was that it wasn’t. Now a video is making its rounds around social media where four different bottled water brands have their pH levels tested alongside tap water and it seems tap water scores another win by being alkalized. According to proponents, alkalized water can neutralize acid in your bloodstream, boost your metabolism and help your body absorb nutrients more effectively. Alkalinity and pH levels are not the whole story. alkaline water (pH> 7.5-8) is supposedly good for the body, but being alkaline alone does not make the water safe for drinking. The water may contain large (or low) quantities of minerals, it may also contain harmful minerals such as bromine. An overall chemical analysis is required to deem if the water is safe for drinking, and not some guys sitting in a diwanya showing us how chemical indicators change color in different pH environments.

Exactly +1

But I am still sure that our tap water is of the high standards, if there is a problem with tap water it’s probably with the pipes.

FYI – bottled water may not necessarily have their mineral content checked out. Usually bottled water is plain tap water filtered, UV treated and bottled. Tap water is safe IMO if you filter and boil.

Well for the most part I believe you about not filtering but there are some “if’s”. I think that would entirely depend on where you live, how old your building/pipes are, what is the condition of the storage tank(if there is one used), and how you get your water. I would also say to run the water for a good minute, on the safe side, before drinking any because of grit and particles. I am sure a lot of people have seen these things if not one or all water utilities in the household.

to me this test is inconclusive because the bottles are already open. Who knows if the water has been changed in them. Second we dont see them actually filling the glass with tap water from the faucet. To see it casually and think interisting ok but to believe it and start drinking tap water not a chance.

And the general consensus regarding the Kuwaiti tap water matter because, after all, this is a blog of chemists.

Why drink tap when Fiji table water is so easily on tap?

Did you hear the one abt Stephen Pichler, the ex CEO of Jazeera Air who
quit his cushy job in Kuwait for Fiji Air. I tell you; it’s all about the water, bro.
🙂 🙂

I have built 3 levels of filtration at home to remove sediment and water taste and Odor from the municipal water, tanks and pipes. by using 5 Micron, Carbon filter and 1 Micron final filter.

It costed me around 26KD only, The problem of bottled water and expensive filter is that they use RO Technology which removes that alkaline from water and make it harmful for the body.

My advise is to use simple carbon filter as it is enough.

What a joke. So the guy might actually claim his a B.Sc in chemistry now and ask for raise in salary.
As Bo7moud & Homer are stating above take this video as a paint class video or how to color the water with some strange chemicals (few decades back this guy might have been considered a wizard :)).
If you wanna prove something you have to do it right, use proper lab equipment,now-days you have digital pH-meters, but if you wanna play with pH indicators at least do it correctly.

@Mark, you should post this on 2:48PM or @KuwaitFail

The Ministry of Health has revealed a team of its employees carried out lab tests on drinking water at government buildings — ministries and government schools and the result showed 90 per cent of this water in unfit for drinking, reports Al-Anba daily quoting Ministry of Health sources.

The sources added, water coolers and water tanks suffer from negligence and as a result of which gather bacteria and fungi has collected at the bottom which can cause various types of diseases according to medical reports. The sources said the medical teams that participated in the field survey of the sources of drinking water is in the process of submitting its final report on the health status, with recommendation to replace the water sources and maintenance.

Its alkaline because water is slightly chloronated to keep bacteria algae and etc from forming in the water.

To test water quality check lead, iron, colony forming units. Etc.
A simple minded ph test doesnt say anything about water qaulity.

Many experts feel 0.9 micron berkfield filter combined with UV filter is sufficient for safe drinking water( for complete protection against overhead dirty tanks/pipes). Do any of you know where can I buy british berkfield filter. Earlier Lulu had it, but they don’t have it now.

I live in Farwaniya and my building gets water through water tankers filled from a source in Khietan (near UN building). ‘Drinking Water’ is labelled on the tanker but I was wondering whether it was safe to drink with a normal filter or do I need to install a mini filter plant from coolpex or something. Or just go for bottled water.
