MacBook Air

World’s thinest laptop…[Link]

52 replies on “MacBook Air Released”

They were thinking we have the MacBook and MacBook Pro for people who want a built in cdrom drive, lets build a laptop thats extremely thin and light for people who care more about portability. If they really need a cdrom drive they can get an add on for $99 or just borrow a cdrom drive off another computer around via software.

Now we have flash drives and wireless network. I find myself using the CD-ROM once or twice a month. Everything is downloadable these days. Actually, I always try to avoid DVDs and CDs because they take space and they are hard to keep track off.

Having said that, I am still going to buy a MacBook Pro because I need the extra space, power, and flexibility. I like the MacBook Air though.

it’s the thinnest laptop but not the smallest. the screen is still too big, which can make it prone to snapping or bending in half.

the best fully functional (built in DVD) small laptop is still the sony TZ series which is an amazing 11 inches.

Holla, have you ever tried to type one page on Sony 10″ notebook? what is the point of having a very tiny computer when you cannot use comfortably? 13.3″ is still small. Portable computers are compared by weight not physical size. Try traveling six hours with while carrying an extra 6 pounds (2.8 kg) on your back or shoulder.

TZ is awesome. I migrated to it from the S Series……

Macs will never be taken seriously. They control what, 5 % of the PC market?

super, thin etc etc is just apple s lame marketing terms for poser fan boys to slobber into buying its crap .Apple has taken its “think different” thingy way too far, it just killed the portability factor in a laptop. No optical drive,( ext. drive?? yeah welcome to 1998) no user replaceable battery ( even sony’s thinnest lappy has a user changeable battery), no Ethernet port, just one fucking usb port, no PCMCIA , cannot upgrade the ram and ofcourse Apples scratch friendly crap as usual…..lol seriously..what kind of fools would buy this crap ??? I dunno gotta pity those aliens!

* waits for the fan boys to start crowing*

what a coencidence. . . .my laptop is broken and it isnt repairable!!! yes!!
and now i no what im getting 😛

crocko rock..
You say say mac is not to be taken seriously.. Lets look at it from a different point of view. Dells stock is at around $21, IBM $98, Microsoft (msft) $34, toshiba (tosbf) $7, Intel (intl) $23… AND Apple stock ( AAPL) is at $170.
I won’t continue since you have to agree that it speaks for itself.

sfsa78: comparing stock prices shows you have no idea stock value. here is a hint, look into % increase over time, look into market capital, look into earnings, Petrochina is less than apple for 1 share hehe but its a trillion dollar company (first in the world)

Frankom it costs KD493 not KD1000, the 1000 is with the expensive harddrive

Armani I understood ships in 3 weeks

mzmaar: I wouldn’t get the MacBook Air because I don’t really use my laptop for travelling, i use it 90% of the time surfing the web from my living room couch. But this isn’t a product for fanboys, this is a product for university students or business people who take their laptop everywhere they go. The optical drive although something important isn’t used often, last time i used it for example was when installing Leopard . Now if someone needs an optical drive they have the add on which very easily can be tucked away in your laptop bag to take out whenever you need it.

And SoS if you think Apple shouldn’t be taken seriously then you really need to just take a look at the iPod and iPhone.

mark i’m a college a student and i dont think the extra weight of a cdrom will kill me or something.what kind of a laptop is that without a cdrom if you really need something to surf the web with without having to carry so much weight then buy an internet tablet or something apple just wanted to do the worlds thinnest laptop so they just sacrificed important things like the cdrom to produce this OVERPRICED product for their fanboys so they wouldnt carry soo much weight…lol! like that extra couple of pounds will make a difference ! and the no ethernet port thing is just a joke ! i think they decided to go with no ethernet port to cut a little weight off …lol!yeah and no user-replaceable battery is just genius !

7ussein if you don’t care about weight (like me) you can get the entry level Macbook for $1099 (like me).

But some people want an extremely light portable laptop and if it was such a stupid idea SONY would have stopped producing their TZ series and Fuji would have discontinued their LifeBook.

I think the Air is expensive but thats because I would rather have a 1099$ MacBook but compared to the Sony TZ the Air is competitively priced.

You need to understand the philosophy behind Apples thinking which is basically keep things simple. In the modern world people don’t use ethernet or modems so why include them? Why add an ethernet port if the majority of people don’t use it? If someone does want to use an ethernert port you can get an add on device or they will just upgrade their home network to include wireless.

If you don’t like the MacBook Air its because you are not the target audience not because Apple is stupid.

“SoS if you think Apple shouldn’t be taken seriously then you really need to just take a look at the iPod and iPhone”

Talking to sense to itrolls is like talking peace to G.Bush, they just won’t get it.

bobader i have used the TZ series before to write a report and it’s perfectly comfortable. it’s actually a near perfect laptop in all terms.

on behalf of college students: perhaps im just a “stupid fan[girl]” who loves apple stuff.. and yes, i may be a flaky college student who loves apple partially because they make pretty white products with a cute illuminated apple on the screen cover.. but i am still willing to give away a large portion of my monthly income to apple inc. and even if a bunch of “stupid fan people” are being “tricked” into buying these “worthless” products, well hey, you got me, but its still apples success.
<3 apple 🙂

i agree with comment #6 (iNoor): the macbook pro is still the best (for my needs)….i hope it gets upgraded though (let me suggest a blu ray drive?) … Apple has to realize that a fully functional multimedia laptop has to support hi-def.

crocko rock
You probably need to get your facts right. Apple market share as of Sept 07 is 8.1% a jump from 6.2% the same time on 2006. For your information, Apple is in third place after Dell and HP for the number of computer shipped in 2007 (US).

SoS
1998?! LOL the CD-ROM was used long before that!! but it seems that about the time you started using computers!
Do you still use the serial and parallel ports on your computer? I don’t think so. I guess you only need a CD-ROM if you still buy your software from Hawalli LOL

I have to agree with Mark on this, it is targeted for specific group of people, I think it’s perfect for mac-business-men that are jumping from one country to the other.
what some see as overpriced others see as convenient.
I’m really liking it though =)

sfsa78: it is priced at about $170 now simply because unlike other big tech companies, they don’t pay dividends for shareholders, they don’t make big acquisitions, and they don’t buy their shares back from the market. although apple IS doing exceptionally well (thanks for their ipod lineup rather than any other product they offer) nonetheless that doesn’t always mean that its bigger than other (cheaper per share) companies, it just mean that it has much less shares in total.

FYI: IBM is so far the worlds biggest tech company, HP comes at a close 2nd and i know for a fact that microsoft is a much bigger company than apple is.

at the end, i think apple ONLY has about 8% (as of Dec ’07) of the personal computing market share for a reason 🙂

every piece of PC hardware apple sells comes equipped with mac OS doesnt it? 🙂
and even this 8% apple just reached this percentage after strong sales in this past holidays season ya3ni (6.xx% before then if i remember correctly) so for the past 20 sth years (not trying to be accurate) that macs has been around they could only manage to get hold of about 8% market share. come on people now that should tell you sth. !!

having said that, i don’t, by any mean, deny the design beauty that apple has come up with for their pc lineups over the of years .. but this is whats called a beauty with an AIR HEAD

I think it is worth to be mentioned to tell u that i do usually recommend macs for any friend of mine who i know uses a pc exclusively for chatting, facebooking and browsing

yeah thats true about the 8% of hardware being equal to 8% of OS but its not fair to say that because Apple has a small market share that there is something wrong. Windows is just more popular and anyone whos used windows and OSX will tell you OSX is better.

umm i beg a differ, mac os is more like an eye candy rather than anything else, in my opinion and i am open to be persuaded on this, because to be honest i only had apple for about a month (when i bought it for a friend and had to use it while abroad) but the thing is i found out that you barely can touch configure anything in it, while on windows you can configure abs. everything u want using the registry ie. windows os is way more customizable, and the claim that macs dont crash is proven to be plain wrong for me, as the machine hanged several times on me, as did the softwares.

at the end, i love windows because it is extremely flexible even dangerously so. and performance wise i never bought that macs are faster machines than pc’s because in the end mac adopted the same processor architicutre that windowds machines use (intel) which I personally saw and heard S.Jobs claiming to have a better processor than intels top of the line (i think it was back in the days mac’s G sth processors and he claimed it to be about 25% faster than intels top of the line only to adapt intel cpu’s less than a year after)

i hope i didnt bore you with my long entries, i usually just read your articles and comments w/o participating.

its just that ive been arguing about this topic for years now ever since i had a friend whos an apple extremest back in my college days 🙂

finally let me say that my only take on the mac air (design wise), is that the border of the screen is too thick to be super stylish.. just too much plastic around the screen for me

AQ you might be right about somethings. Yes Macs freezes but not as much as windows. I have my mac for one and half years and it had few freezes (maybe 10 times max) mainly with leopard. I used Vista at work and it freeze almost every other day. You cannot actually judge speed by looking at the thing and don’t forget that until recently most of mac os applications are not designed to run on Intel chip. It also depends on the programs you use. Many programs (both on windows and mac os x) do not utilize the dual core feature.
By the way, what do you mean by windows can be configured anyway you want?! I thought Linux came out because people/programmers wanted to be able to customize their OS and windows is closed OS and cannot be customized (Good luck if you make a mistake while modifying the registry).
Don’t get me wrong, windows is great OS but its kind of boring and a security risk without an anti-virus. For the last month or so, there have been a virus on our university campus infecting every computer on the network but not mac. Our IT are frustrated trying to catch it as it goes from windows machine to another (not macs).

Bo-Bader: I agree with you in that macs have more eye candy bits than windows os (but ubuntu surpass them both in that aspect) & that windows os is more prone to virus attacks, but that just because its soooo much more popular that people would actually sit and spend their time writing the virus codes or whatever, wait till mac’s become some what popular (if ever :P) and more and more viruses will hit it.

as for cusmtomization, programmers do go to linux mainly because its an open source code software, while windows on the other hand is a closed source code ( its so to prevent programmers to from altering it and then selling it under different name and that what happened with linux and red hat). and about windows registry, atleast you can brick your own machine if you felt like it (remember people strive for options), but remember that windows does ask you to back up your registry before missing with it. plus the backup feature for the whole os thingy thats comes built in (dont remember its commercial name)
i have vista enterprise at work and basic at a laptop at home and they never crashed on me. that doesnt mean its invincible though.

i personally dont see why everyone is so intent on that cd drive, i have a 15 inch MacBook Pro and i honestly *NEVER* used the cd drive, except once to copy South Park episodes off a dvd. lets face it; ppl today just exchange data thru their USBs or iPods.
