Aramex just delivered my D90 camera. I ordered it once it got released late last month as a replacement for my Nikon D70 which had started showing its age. I originally purchased the D70 for my Miskan project back in November 2004 to replace my aging Sony F717. I still love my D70 and it still performs really great but its developed a problem that’s common to the D70’s where it has trouble reading the memory card. Although I hate zoom lenses I ordered the D90 with the kit lens. Since I will be trying to shoot short movies I figured a zoom lens would definitely come in handy. I still have my eyes on the Nikon 20mm f2.8 lens and the Nikon 85mm 1.8f lens. Maybe for Christmas…

I had my eye on the D700 but since I don’t shoot as often as I used to I couldn’t bring myself to spend $3000 on something that will spend most of its time in the closet. D90’s movie mode also intrigued me.

now u can take videos of half-eaten burgers and shawerma and stuff, And with HD we will be able to see the leftover spit on the bite marks 😀

Good choice .. I had my eye on the Canon EOS 5D Mark II but not anymore since it doesnt have internal flash and no SDHC card but Flash card which I hate.

5D Mark II is targeted for semi-professionals, or for professionals (as a backup body). It will be silly for Canon to support SDHC cards as all their pro bodies support CF cards (due to their bigger size, ruggedness, faster speeds etc.).

And no pro in his senses will use the pop-up flash.

Do try to post a short movie, preferably with your 50mm f1.4 lens to see the DOF.

I went to your blog! cant argue anymore .. However, I would prefer the SDHC and nowadays you can find it with 32GB of 15-20M/s which is not bad at all size and performance wise. I have plenty of these cards scattered around the house and it is very wise to get a cam that support the SDHC even if ment for proffessional. Agree about the flash though.

Thats a nice cam Mark, although some ‘purists’ hate the idea of an SLR having movie mode. I checked out the review in dcresource and the HD video is sweet !
you might want to get another set of lenses though.. bet you cant wait for xmas to get here ! 😛

Nice camera. I saw a review by David Pogue the other day about it. Did you get the one with image-stabilized lens?

The Vixia HF10 is a nice little gadget to capture HD video. I also have a HD camcorder (Sony HDR-SR11). But both these gadgets suffer from tiny sensors that give huge depth-of-field making cinema quality video recording impossible.

This is addressed by the D90 (and to a larger extent 5D MK II). You can now create video that would normally require equipment worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Have a look at this video created by 5D and get amazed by the fact that you are only watching 1/4th the actual size recorded!!!

Our tiny little fancy camcorders will never be able to achieve that. That is why I am very keen to see what Mark comes up with. And this is why everyone in the dSLR world has suddenly woken up to the fact that a whole new ball game has just opened up.

congrats for the new cam, im a canon fan, but i think Nikon got it right with the HD video for the price anyway. ill be waiting for the canon one with the same features.

i have a question though how much did Aramex charge you?

Congrats Mark, let us know what you think of the camera, I’m gonna be in the market for a new SLR pretty soon, and would like to know what you think of the Nikon D90.

too bulky and not very bright. my 50mm is 1.8f and the 2 lenses i am interested in are also 1.8f and 2.8f. The kit zoom lens is 3.5f and up.. HUGE difference

But wouldn’t you say less bulky than carrying two or 3 lenses, + one good advantage with a zoom lens when it comes to using them with digi cameras is the reduction of the need to take the lens off for changing focal lengths.
With film, any spec that got on the medium would move when film cranked but on a chip, it’ll be on every picture in the same place & I am yet to a real good solution for chip cleaning.

Make sure you don’t get too cocky with the sensor cleaning and start changing lenses in the wild dust storms that we get in Kuwait. The cleaning mechanism will generally clean normal dust but if some sticky gobs get onto the sensor, you will have to clean it yourself (or take it to the service center).
