9ura.com is a Kuwait-based group that was created to showcase talents and educate people about the Middle East through photography.
They just launched a few days ago and they’re holding their first photography competition with the theme “Environments in the GCC”. There will be three categories: Culture, Nature, and Urban and I think I already have a photograph that I will be submitting.
If you want to take part in this competition you need to upload your photo to their website some time between August 15th and October 15th, 2011.
Here is a link to their website [Link]

IMPORTANT: I just read the fine print and there is an important point that I previously missed. According to their fine print, by submitting your photographs to 6ura.com each of your submissions becomes THEIR property. They will have free, permanent, non-exclusive, and royalty-free rights to use, reproduce, and/or display your photos in any format they please. Personally, this means I won’t be submitting anything to them since I want to remain the owner of my photographs.

Such a great idea!
How do you browse the uploaded pics?
As this is the first competition, the photographs currently on the website have been generously contributed by photographers to use as the background for 9ura.com. The photograph above was contributed by photographer Bader Al-Ajeel (the details of the photo as they appear on the website are: “I Am Free – Bader Al-Ajeel, on 11/2008, in Kuwait”).
The photographs submitted will not be posted until the winners are announced. Several competition finalists will have the opportunity to have their photographs published in a gallery on the 9ura.com website as well as in the 9ura.com photo-book which will be distributed throughout the GCC.
Once you submit a photo to that stie you give away your rights to the photograph. It becomes their property and they can do anything they wish with it. These types of “photography competitions” are just a way of collecting free stock photos. A competition that is truely about photography would not force the photographer to relinquish his/her rights.
Fully agree.
come on.. they put something nice and they want to rip off? >>
Phew that was close. I was about to submit a photo for the competition, good thing I checked this blog first. Give the rights of MY photographs to them? Yeah right.
Thank you Mark for your comment as it helps clarify things. 9ura.com is a non-profit photo-competition with to main objectives: 1) it aims to support photographers in showcasing their work 2) it also aims to educate people about the Middle East through photographs. By submitting a photograph, the photographer is contributing to this learning process. The Ownership clause of the 9ura.com competition does not take away credit from the photographer. In fact, it does the opposite. By submitting a photo, the photographer gives 9ura.com the right to publicize those photographs and meet these two objectives. in the important notice you typed 6ura.com instead of 9ura.com

how evil…
Mark,
Did you read the Competition Rules ? They do not take away your rights as a photographer ( You’re still the owner of your photos should you upload to 9ura.com ). Read it under Competition Rules > Ownership.
Abdulrahman this post is from August 12th so they might have rephrased their small print since then.
