Acer Aspire One

Acer Aspire One

While I was in Thailand I spotted the Acer Aspire One at one of the electronic stores. The Aspire One was recently released to compete with the likes of the Eee PC and I think its got a pretty good shot at it. For one thing the Acer is around $150 cheaper, I just checked Amazon and the Aspire One is selling for KD100 which is pretty darn cheap. It also comes in different colors, the one I saw was navy blue but if I was going to get one I would probably get the white one pictured above.

MSI Wind

Also today while I was at Carrefour I spotted the MSI Wind which is also competing in the same category. Carrefour had it priced at KD185 but its cheaper on Amazon although its currently out of stock. Here is the link to the Acer Aspire One on Amazon. [Amazon Link]

I really don’t know which one to get !

i mean there are lots of small/mini new pc’s with different brands and i’m just getting more confused each day !

any suggestion is appreciated ; )

p.s: this wont be my main pc for sure !

Below are the main points to compare since all of them got the Atom 1.6 CPU :

1- Price
2- Screen size ( 8.9″ or 10″)
3- Design, Look and Feel (this depends on what you like)
4- How much space (Some got Hard Disk and others got SSD Flash Memory)
5- Battery (some got 2 hours and some others can stay up tp 7 hours)

To me when it comes to laptops and if all got the same CPU speed I would go with the longer battery.

I bought it few days back from clicknbuy It costs 150KD and they upgraded the ram to 1 giga free of charge. Its my first time i use those kinds of notebook, i liked its portability but its damn slow after i installed win XP. My suggestion Install ubunto its much lighter but the problem with me I know nothing about linux.

one of my friend have it and the SSD type they use it so slow that windows xp is unusable, the asus SSD is much better with xp.

also ubnuto is slow as hell so consider stick to orginal linux which is btw (Linpus Lite) modified by acer.

Please visit BEST BUY KWT in Hawalli , You will find Acer Aspire One , Asus 8.9″ and New HP 2133 with 8.9″ and DELL 10″ is coming soon, at very good prices

By the way, it seams Asus Eee 901 is the best performance wise so far with XP and best battery life (up to 7 hours), and you can esily add a hard disk of 80GB or 120GB along with the built in SSD memory.

My Eee 901 got 2GB RAM, 4GB SSD for XP Pro, 80GB Hard Disk, Bluetooth, Cam, Wireless, Extra 16GB SDHC and a Touch Screen.

It boots in no time, very portable and beleive me for such a price and such a potential of modifications it is worth it and better than the $3000 Sony Vaio.

@ HeartBeat , i need a second one for portable use, my main laptop is 17in so it is not the most practical size to be carried around every where u go ; )
so i’m looking for a cheap ultra portable laptop !

the acer is pretty sweet! especially that its 100kd! .. i thought that 185kd for msi wind is a total rip off!! but note that there are 2 kinds of msi! one with 3-cell and 6-cell battery.. the 3-cell battery will last for about 2hours max. thats what mark found.. but the 6-cell if im not mistaken its about $599.. which is approx 160kd! .. carreforee are selling msi wind (6-cell).

well I just bought this Acer one with linpus linux and 512MB Ram +8GB SSD, (it shows me only 3-4GB free! )it is very light, and boots fast, it integrates many useful software and better to stick to them if you are thinking of installing your own software better get another laptop, I am new to Linux too however I search the net for useful tips and get few nice tips like showing the full menu on right clicking on the desktop, battery lasts around 3h, heat sometimes a bit high especially during charging on AC IM software can log to many IDs but not all in full voice and video (Only MSN), skype also can work but you have to download the linux version from skype or Acer website, it is true when you open the screen a little wide the front tend to rise ( because it is very light weight and probably improper hinge design), it is sad that there is no Arabic keyboard support till now I hope it will be provided soon, net surfing is good and till now is fast and virus free (since it is linux not windows) which I like being away from Anti virus programs that tend to slowdown the system. touchpad need time and customisation to get used to it and I always seem mistaken the scroll side for the right button (they should have made it a bit different)
blue tooth is not available sadly,
however, its mobility makes it vey good if you travel alot or want to be connected everywhere
