Al-Qabas apology gone wrong

Last month I posted about Aysha, the Bahraini blogger who found out Al-Qabas newspaper had stolen a picture of her and published it in the newspaper without permission. Well Al-Qabas posted an apology a couple of days back… and posted her picture again.

If you remember, my whole issue was that the newspaper took a picture, my picture, from my blog without my permission. So, when I was informed that there would be a published apology on their site and the newspaper I never, ever imagined that they would actually REPRINT my image. Are they kidding? Are they seriously that naive or genuinely apologizing? My whole issue to begin with was having MY image plastered/printed in the bloody paper to begin with. They must be joking right? A cruel, pathetic joke!

You can check out her full post on her blog [Here]

Mark: Not at all, but they did apologize for it. They issued the apology without refering to her by name and showing the picture for which they apologize.

How would she know the apology is directed to her if there’s no mention of name or picture?

I think she is exaggerating here and should let go. I mean maybe they felt posting her name would be inappropriate so they just apologized for whatever they posted related to her. They could have removed the picture but then it would have been an anonymous public apology.

i agree with najib, seriously what is wrong with her?! no pic and no name :s then how would she know that they were referring to her when apologizing,, i guess they should have sent her an e-mail apologizing rather that posting it for everyone to see?

I’ll tell you all why she is making a big deal about it – because something like this is clearly intentional, – this is a dig ! this is a case of, excuse my language, the newspaper saying “here, here’s your apology, up yours and fuck you!”. And that’s gotta hurt! Everyone here would be upset regardless of how long their ding dong is. Its sad actually. If al-Qabas was a kid, he’d be the school bully, the insecure coward !

I was with her %100 when al qabas started this . but now , I don’t know , its obvious that she want ATTENTION from her blog followers and fellow blogers ! and there is nothing wrong with that to be honest.

What al qabas did is totally wrong , and they apologies TO the woman in the photo they published ! by publishing her photo again ! that’s another mistake .

But its a local newspaper and the workers there are used to print apologies by names and photos . Am %100 sure this what happened :

writer : plz print the apology to this woman .
editor : whats her name ?
writer : i don’t know ! but i have this photo of her , will it do ?
editor : sure it will….

If her picture is online anyone can use it, the only issue will be with crediting her… if she has a problem of people showing her face then maybe she shouldn’t have uploaded it in first place.

I believe Al Qabas done the right thing by showing the picture again in the apology and crediting the owner of the photo. However if the owner of the photo believes that this photo is private and should not end up like that then maybe its time that she removes it from the net and calls it an error from her side.

“Najib: The girl just wants her privacy and not her picture plastered in newspapers without her permission. Is that too much to ask?”

WHA!?! Wants her privacy?! Do you expect to get privacy over your face when you come on tv? Do you expect to get privacy on your face when you post it on a public domain?

You make no sense, Mark.

Come on what privacy she is talkin about??? if she realy want a privacy then why would she post her pic’s in her blog for all the visitors to see!! I think that if AlQabas newspaper made a mistake by publishing her photo then it made it right now by apologize, there is no need to make a big deal of it when she already posted her pic’s in the net!! it’s not like posting her pic’s only for her friends in facebook!! she has posted them for all the visitors; she should take her responsibility of that also.

wow 3azeez you’re so wrong. You think thats how copyrights work?

When you upload something onto your site it still belongs to you and no one has the right to that picture. Even if you have the picture in full resolution in a public domain you still own the picture and have full rights… that is unless you tell people they can use it. For example I have pictures of the Kuwait Stock Exchange which I took and decided since a lot of people wanted to use the pictures that the pictures would be made available for everyone to use. https://248am.com/mark/kuwait/pictures-from-the-kuwait-stock-exchange/

It was my choice since they are my pictures. But before I made them available to the public people were going to my flickr and then emailing me asking if they could use the picture. If anyone took the picture off flickr without my permission then they were stealing. If anyone takes any picture I post on this blog that I took and use it, they’re stealing my picture.

You need to get your facts straight and read up on some copyright laws and know what the photographers rights are.

I’m with Just. This was not a real apology. Clearly some people really hate having to take responsibility for their actions. She can post her image everywhere if she feels like it, and they would still be wrong in printing it without her permission and claiming it as their own.

I second Khaled. You are doing the same thing that alqabbas did if you say the picture is what she doesnt want public ! you further publicized it !

For once I have to completely agree with mark on this one, that poor girl – am horrified by what happened to her and by non other than ALQABAS. Shame, shame on them twice – then adding insult to further injury by reprinting the photo – this is beyond messed up.

(aslan el salfa)whole thing should not have happened, meaning copywrite is to be recognized; even if nobody follows the law there shall be dire consequences. Mark please fahemhum mara thanya.

I’m not going to comment or even say my personal opinion on the concept of publishing personal photo on the net, or why I think some ppl do it. Although I don’t know the person in the photo, but I do sympathize with her. On the other hand, if you post your personal photo on the internet, I think you must be prepared to accept the implications, especially given the fact that you’re in the Gulf and not Scandinavia, and the abuse that could be exercised especially if it’s a pic of a young girl. With all that said, “Does that give any newspaper the right to publish such photo?” Clearly not. We all have the right to put whatever we want on our blogs. I also we should be liable.
I thought what alqabas did what disgusting, and when it was bought to my attention long back I tried to find out what happened. To make a long story short, I think it’s important to get the facts straight. The girl’s father had called the newspaper and had explicitly asked them to republish the same picture. Personally, and I am entitled to my opinion, its naïve if you think a Kuwaiti newspaper could be dumb to the point where they would issue an apology and put the pic again just for the sake of it. In fact it is completely contradictory and wouldn’t serve the purpose in the first place.
I find it also a little disturbing to spread or quote or even put a link to news that is not true.

I also think that one should take both sides of a story before jumping into conclusions. Copying and pasting such news from another blog (whether be it a friend or foe) hurts the credibility of 248. Lets criticize and condem any newspaper that steels ANY photo, news, or even publishes shady facts. But by advertising the wrong facts about this incident, are we not doing what we’re telling newspapers not to do ?
