Aramex and Customs become friends

Aramex and the Kuwaiti customs have come to an agreement. From now on all goods that are valued at $100 and up will be subjected to a 5% customs charge and a KD1 handling charge. No additional delays or charges.

Thats actually not a bad compromise at all. I would rather pay 5% than pay KD20 + 5% they were talking about last week.

Update: Some readers have brought up an interesting theory which is there never was any issue with customs and that Aramex created all this so they could just increase their prices. Some readers have also written that they had contacted USWS and DHL both of which had said they didn’t receive any letter from customs and that it was business as usual for them. This is just a conspiracy theory but an interesting one nevertheless.

So this means every shipment > $100 must also come with a commercial invoice (how you’ll know the value of the goods?)

Where exactly will you get this invoice?

Personal use shipments should be exempt. If you buy something used from e-bay, where will you get the invoice to prove its value?

Customs needs to get it through their thick heads the difference between freight and courier.

That seems very fair.
But I guess that Customs will still reserve the right to seek clearance for packages that contain items that require further inspection – which would require additional clearance charges.

If there is no commercial invoice, it should go through clearance. How else can Customs know what is inside the package? How would they know whether the item is prohibited or not?

Great !!. Just as expected. At least we know what to expect. 1KD +5% is fair enough.

$100 means that 99% of all shipments will be charged. No one buys anything online < $100, unless you are looking at magazines, which *should* be classified as documents and exempt anyway.

Even so, considering the price gouging that is the norm in Kuwait's retail market, even with the 5% you still come out on top.

$100 limit?that’s KD 28 only. A few questions:

– Who decides on the goods’ valuation, the customs officer? the invoice (which can be falsified)?

– We are already pay up the a** in shipping charges to Aramex, now we have to pay an additional KD1 + 5% of the value? That’s basically paying taxes in a country that supposedly doesn’t have VAT.

– I’ve just have to pay KD17 to clear 2 HardDrives valued at $100 each, PLUS shipping of KD 20, that’s a total of KD37… i almost paid twice for these drives. It would have been better to go to stupid iCity and pay the extra margin these bastards charge.

The question is can we live without aramex and other similar services? Probably not for the goods that dont exist here, but im definitely not using them anymore for anything that i can find here. Between shipping charges + Taxes, it’s probably as expensive if not more than the local price.

puff: dude harddrives sell for cheaper in Kuwait than on Amazon, thats like Hard Drives Basics 101. Just don’t buy them from iCity, buy them from hawalli. Mac and PC harddrives are exactly the same.

How do you increase charges in a recession.

So they create a problem, let people cry and beg for a solution.
Then provide a solution that looks better than the problem which was what they wanted to do in the first place.

S&S customers are not idiots. Just people with limited choice in a market filled with businesses making excess profit.

I still remember Radio Shack in Life Centre in shuwaikh 2 years back. All their software was is USD, Items priced in USD. I bought something there marked $7.50 and paid KD 7.500. That is kuwait.

since my friend study in Bahrain i would rather order all my shipments to Bahrain instead of Kuwait and then every weekend he go there he can collect them and bring them back to Kuwait

If you think the issue is resolved think again they will do something in the near future to mess up what they are claiming to resolve. This is an indirect way to increase their charges I don’t believe that there is an issue with the customs in the first place. Aramex is just greedy that is all!!!

If I’m not mistaken, there is a value field on the sticker Aramex puts on to determine which shipment is yours(near your Kuwaiti address)
Perhaps that’s the key?

#19 fns, I called DHL last week and asked them about the new custom charges they said they never received a letter nor a notice which means there is no such thing, aramex are simply playing us off every six months they increase their charges due to increase in petrol prices now this is the new thing. I am sorry to say this to you guys but we are all stupid in their perspective that is why they are taking this as a habit!! I will call aramex tomorrow and ask them to send me the letter that they received from the customs the one with the charges and all and the other one regarding resolving the issue!

Burhan, I would say 80-90% of the items I buy online cost under 100$. Only stuff like cameras, ipods, computers etc.. cost me more than 100$ and I don’t buy these every week

There are a lot of items under $100 which are worth it. I got around 3 Sandisk Sansa Views for myself and friends a month back. They cost me around $79.00 each from amazon + 5.5 shipping.

They are now available at Jarir Bookstore for KD 52 each. So shopping locally is out of the question.

So basically a higher up in Aramex knows some higher up in the ministry/customs and they talked and sucked each other off over some tea and nuts in the diwaniya and managed to come out with this AMAZING deal that still benefits them greatly but fucks us over just a tiny bit less. WOW thanks a lot Aramex and Kuwait Kustomz!

Now I can happily keep my mouth shut about all the same bullshite that keeps happening here because I can finally get my order of LV luggage through and only get fingered in the arse with baseless charges instead of full blown rape. Alhamdulillah I still have my health.

Never mind fixinf the tax issue, they still have an issue delivering th packages. After 1 year of non usage, they managed to ship a pair of shoes to my account rather than my gas tank cover go figure…

They made this whole custom thing up where is the letter that they got from the customs containing the fees how come we got a letter that doesn’t even look legitimate something very wrong going on here. Imagine ordering a macbook pro laptop for 2000$ you would pay almost 100 KD for extra fees (30 KD shipping + 30 KD custom charges + 30 KD tax by amazon) enjoy the amazing sacrifice aramex did on our behalf. I have never heard in a country where prices go up and never go down NEVER EVER maybe we break the laws of supply and demand maybe the laws of physics too!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE guys call aramex and ask them to forward you that letter from the customs when they tried to force that law and if you do get your hands on it post it online and I will be the first one to say sorry to aramex but if not you are very smart to figure it out on your own.

now Aramex will:
1- put only 1 KD stamp on 1 Paper because its one bundle.
2- Pay 2 KD to CBK for 1 payment because they wanna clear it in one bundle.
3- Clear all the shipments below $100 without paying a single fils.
4- Clear all the shipments above $100 paying their %5 fee.
5 – The Customers is THE BIGGEST LOSER IN EARTH`s HISTORY

one big example:

The Container Contains 1450 shipment 1400 of them are below $100 and just 50 are above $100 so they should pay the %5 and lets say each of the 50 items is priced $250 so they should pay $12.5 for each $250 item the total will be $625 for the 50 items so the total charge will be 182.5 KD if the dollar was .292 fils anyway here goes the calculation all the customers below the $100 value paid 1 KD and the other customers will pay that 1 KD anyway too so total of 1450 KD Handling charges Joke 🙂 now take 182.5 from them and the final will be 1267.5 KD and take the 1 KD stamp and the 2KD for the CBK it will be 1264.5 KD ok tell me who got the benefit here ?????

OOOOH Wait !!! Aramex got another joke they will take the %5 charges which is $12.5 from each Customer because his goods was above the $100 so now 1264.5KD + 182.5 KD = 1447 KD

If they they the service was uninterrupted and nothing as such as the saga we had last week has been introduced, then THAT IT! Aramex can forget about me ordering from them again!

Boss, the 1KD charge will only be paid if your item is over $100. So in your scenario aramex would get 50KD not 1450KD.

Does anyone know if each item needs to be under $100 or whether the entire shipment needs to be under $100?

Frankom said that they would do that and he was right and many others said the same thing, they were playing us off all this time and for what for their own profit it’s as if they increased shipping charges to 1 KD. Customs never “cleared up”, because it has always been the same. Its a matter of either they choose to enforce the current custom rules or look the other way. There are no new rules. Rules take decades here to change and don’t change overnight.

Let me get this straight. A year ago, I was paying a minimum 2.5KD on a $100 purchase for shipping. That went up to 3KD due to so-called fuel surcharges, which turned out to be pure bullshit. Now, on the same purchase, I’ll be paying a minimum 3+1+1.5= 5.5KD. IOW, over the past year, shipping fees have increased 120% and now I’m supposed to call that “fun”? Someone’s having a laugh.

Ok here is the real joke, I just called them today asking if I ever have to go to airport customs again to clear shipments, they said: “No, you pay when its delivered, unless your shipment had illegal stuff or got hold for random inspection”…WHAT! random inspection still there?? wasn’t they supposed to inspect and charge everything!

I asked the employee I spoke with on the phone if perhaps I were to order a laptop/computer and have it shipped through aramex what would the charges be for it? They said that it will now be only 1KD + Shipping costs no 5% for this invoice. I asked if this was a new thing or what and he said that all computers/laptops are exempt from paying the 5% fee.

Which is weird coz I ordered 2 Macbooks via Aramex and both I paid a customs fee :s

i ordered books and the girl in aramex told me its held in customs !!!!! for 3 days nowwww dammmmmm and when i told her its doc’s she said no they r books !!!!!!! books r doc’s for god sake .. and do i have to pay the extra 1 kd for eveything ????? dammmmmmmm

@Mark – I’m the opposite; I only bother with high ticket items that are hyperinflated in Kuwait. For items less than 40 KD, I figured its not worth the hassle of ordering + shipping + taxes + clearance.

I’m going to get a DHL@Home box and order something simple to see what kind of customs I get charged. I have a feeling this is an Aramex-only thing; especially considering how quickly they turned around their “policy”. When have you ever heard of government working so quickly?

FYI everyone Aramex did not come to an agreement, this was the situation from the first email we all received from them. Aramex just did a bad job at first to explain the situation and then the rumors escalated.

So in conclusion we did nothing they did nothing but explain what happened clearly.

Hmmm…this is turning out to be pretty interesting. Why dont some of us gather and land up Aramex office and get a clear picture?? That way, we can even ask for the document they received from customs and they have to show it to us…!!!

they will cleare your shipment for 10KD or more thats what I was talking about befor.. DHL,FEDX,UPS do not take charges for clearance

now how they will get money (aramex I mean) .. befor they ask you if you want to do it by your self .now they will do it but not free of course ..

You guy need to understand that Aramex is pulling our legs everytime, items such as CD/DVD’s, Laptops, motherboards, PC accessories are not subjected to any clearance charges they are FREE to clear. They have been exposed by the last announcement they don’t want to pay a single dim to customs, they want us to pay it for them making their courier service very very profitable. You think companies like DHL, Fedex don’t pay customs worldwide they do but they didn’t go the twisted Kharamex way pay getting away with it and making the customers pay it for them.

Why in hell everytime I call aramex and ask for Mr. Murad for some reason they can’t get a hold of him????

Mr.Morad Didnt call me yesterday and i call them today and ask for the paper again , they told me the paper is on the wall in the customs airport and you can check it yourself and i tell him about DHL he told me we are better than them we know the updates of the customs and they dont !

hi guys i have a question, say if ur item is worth $90 and the total cost is 110 from shipping and tax, would i still have to pay the 5%

and if i have a bunch of items that are worth less than $100 but the total cost is like $200 do i still have to pay the 5% and does customs search all of our stuff cuz im afraid they will damage some of my stuff

Britney – you pay whatever is the amount on the invoice. So if you invoice total is $110, then you pay the tax.

Regarding the law of customs that is on the wall that is not a circular that was sent to them! I want the letter that was sent in order to meet with these shipping companies not the 20 year old custom rules and fees.

This never made sense to me at all. If Aramex wanted to act nice, they would’ve changed back to old prices when fuel prices went down [that’s if i call correctly] but no, they stayed with the new prices they set because obviously people still order and thus more money to them.

Also keep in mind that when customs used to hold our items ordered through Aramex, we had to pay 20KD + 5% + [[[ 5KD to Aramex if we wanted them to clear it out. ]]]. Now i’ve been wondering why the hell would Aramex want change that to 1KD … Did an angel get dropped down from the sky or what? but as our friend #55 Lucky_Boy mentioned above, he contacted Aramex and they told him “No, you pay when its delivered, unless your shipment had illegal stuff or got hold for random inspection”

If that’s true, random inspection? so what are they doing while we pay 5% + 1KD? they are not inspecting those items? Doesn’t this destroy the whole purpose of why the items are held in the customs?

I want to believe Aramex is innocent but too many things indicate they are not. And believe me, boycotting Aramex WOULD work, specially in Kuwait since we are small in number but is anyone willing to do that?

If people in Kuwait want something, they will always try to get it somehow and refuse to wait.

Whether you like it or not, try to convince people who threw 40 KD on a soccer video game [winning eleven 2010] because they can’t wait 1 day for it, yes the seller himself tells everyone if you come the next day or the day after it, it will be 18 KD. By the way, it sold like cupcakes the 1st day.

somehow this is not right , if I get 10 small items sub $100 , then I have to pay KD10 for Aramex . I think a boycott is needed to fix Aramex greed .

There is a huge backlog. My phone was sitting in customs for 15 days and came today. I had to pay KD 20 + KD 5 freight a total of KD 25 to receive the phone. ( Only KD of this is actually the customs duty the rest is just absurd handling fees by several outsourced partners of customs ) .Obviously the new arrangement with customs is only day forward from the date of their a Aramex greements. Any shipments snared when Customs and Aramex were “not friends” are a pain point for the clients.
If Aramex was truly a great company it would have paid for these fees themselves from their great 23% increase in profits just declared in the press. The high freight charges we pay for ShopNShip are supposed to cover all the clearance fees, except that actual customs duty if any.

One of my friends received a garmin gps system a few months back and of course it got held by the customs. So he called some friends until one of them gave him a phone number to call this guy who works at the customs and do you know what that guy said to him he said Aramex are ripping you off and you are guys are not doing anything about it.

Why would someone at customs say that to a client I mean what would he gain by doing so?

If they increase their prices in the near future and they WILL! Don’t get upset and make a fuss because we are making them do that to us.

I just received a package thats worth 20 US Dollars and i payed 3 KD for shipping (normal) but an extra 1.2 KD for the “Customs Charge”.

I just got a call from one of my friends, he was charged 20 kwd for PS3 game earlier but now after this so called agreement which other courier companies are not all mentioning about, he got a refund of the customs charges and was only charged normal for the delivery. i dunno who can give a clearer picture on this matter ?

Well – people like me got screwed with a KD 19.5 Clearance Fee ( of which only KD 1 is the customs fee ) No one should complain about a KD 1 or 2 fee to keep things flowing . It just the price Aramex has to pay to keep the gates open. Every rule in Kuwait is subject to interpretation, and the treasury hardly needs the money from duties on personal imports via courier.

What you think about this: I brought a printer and paid the charges – I think I will check now if I can get my money back… but I noticed one more thing – you are saying computers should be exempt… BUT on the Label stick on my printer says “Camera accessories”…. so ?

I think a VAT system is coming to Kuwait , with no more customs at the ports , only at retail outlet they will charge a value added tax , this step to allow free trade . But they started at the very easy target , the online shoppers . And they did a very lousy job at explaining it and implementing it .

I asked a ladyat Aramex to show me, or forward the new circulation to my e-mail, she said “sure” took my email and I still did not recieve it, wasnt` expecting it anyway! so I checked the offical Kuwaiti Customs page which i noticed is updated regulary with all circulations. The last circulation was issued in August and posted on their website on 10/8/2009, check here: https://www.customs.gov.kw/arabic/Instructions.aspx (no mention of the new price increase.)

and at the end they confirm that that this IS the official price list and there arent` any extra charges other than those mentioned in the list. Did anyone find the new charges Aramex is talking about??

Received my laptop. Normal delivery charges + new handling fee (KD1).

I asked the delivery guy about the extra KD1 and he said this is a new fee by Aramex. I asked him if the laptop was held in customs and if Aramex had to take the trouble to clear it, he said NO!

He said, LAPTOPS, MOBILES and COMPUTER ACCESSORIES are NEVER held up in customs.

For everything else, there’a a 5% duty for items above $100.

Did this delivery guy leak out a company secret?

My Samsung P2570 24.6″ Screen held in customs for 5 days, i paid 43 weight charges, 5 KD handling from aramex, 11 Tax for customs, and 23 KD ” Ardeyyeh ” for Kuwaiti Airlines and i don’t know why the heck i paid those 23 KD for .. ( that was back in august )

knowing that i bought the screen from Dell’s Accessories website.

Recieved my EVGA Classified Motherboard > 100 $ didn’t pay anything but the 1 KD handling, get my 2 Intel G2 SSD’s (around 600$) and didn’t pay anything but the weight and the 1 KD handling too

Yo BJ! I went today to pick up my package from DHL (borderlinx) it only cost me 3.5 KD and it took six days to be received in Kuwait. Btw the package contained a video game.

guys please i need an answer thats 100% accurate, is it $100 for the item or total ? like if i got 10 things and the total is $140 do i still have to pay the 5% ?
