Be Aware: End the Stigma Against Mental Illness

Last month I posted about a recently graduated high school student who decided to start a campaign called “Be Aware” to raise awareness on mental health issues. Well they’ve now put together a video for their campaign which you can watch above. [YouTube]

I really hope that this campaign becomes a success. There are many undiagnosed cases of mental illnesses and disabilities that range from small things such as ADD/ADHD to larger more dangerous afflictions.

Granted it will take a great deal of support from the government as well since there are no labor laws that protect against discrimination in the work place regarding things like this.

thats right! end the stigma!

i work with an autistic child here in kuwait, i see many children with mental or developmental disorders who need professional help.

over time it should get better, kuwait seems to be a country that is still developing in many ways.

Kuwait is indeed still developing and that’s always a good thing. The more awareness about issues like this the better. Sadly they will also need to find a way to change the idea that things like that are a punishment from God due to a sin of some sort.

People saying that mental illnesses is a punishment from God?!!
i hope you’re not serious. i mean someone mentioned in their last thread that their “doctor” (if u can call her that) said that depression is not a real disease, but this reasoning, that it’s a punishment from God, is almost as bad!!
i hope those people come across the BeAware campaign and have their minds open.

Somewhat touching and applies possibly everywhere in the world EXCEPT here. It doesn’t hit a nerve whatsoever with arab society and culture bc it doesn’t address the core cause of why mental disorders are so looked down upon in our society/culture.

Also the name BE AWARE sounds like a warning and that is deterrent to the cause! This is an extremely careless copy mistake that should have been addressed from the very beginning. Not professional at all. Anyway I talked in depth about this in its thread on the forum and offered some personal help to no avail so I guess this was done as a typical CSR thing that had to be out ASAP.

And like I said in the thread, with some slight changes and some solid INSIGHTS into the core issue, it could be an extremely unique take on a very common and important issue that is HEAVILY overlooked.
As it stands now, it’s just generically touching and rather awkward.

@ Pfunk:
The Be Aware campaign is not asking people to “BE AWARE” as you put it. It’s asking people to be familiar with and acknowledge that people with mental illnesses are all around us in our daily lives and that they should not be shunned from society because of their mark of disgrace.

Be Aware an invitation to enlightenment, not a “deterrent to the cause.” However if you spell it as “BE AWARE”, then that’s a whole different story. Yes, caps lock does make a huge difference when delivering a message.

I know what they mean but why not use something clever yet perfectly CLEAR that leaves no room for negative interpretation? It just needed a bit more thought is all…
