A Camel Burger

Two days ago I get an email from Smoke House telling me they’re planning to launch a Hashi burger and if I was interested to try it out. Hashi turns out means baby camel and since I hadn’t tried camel meat before I figured why not.

I wasn’t too sure what to expect, I’ve tried ostrich meat before and found it very lean and chewy so I figured camel meat would probably be the same but maybe have a stronger flavor. I wasn’t expecting it to be good but thought it would at least be worth trying just for the experience.

It turns out camel meat actually tastes pretty much like regular beef. I had the burger with caramelized onions, cheese and BBQ sauce, strong flavors which slightly overpower the patty but in this case a great combination since hashi meat is slightly drier than beef so the toppings helped keep things juicy. I’m not sure why other places don’t have Hashi burgers as well, could be a good diet patty due to the fact it contains less fat than beef.

Smoke House haven’t introduced the burger yet nor do they have a price for it but they’ll be updating their Twitter account once they do as well as their website. Fahad if you’re reading this I didn’t have lunch so I could have this burger and I won’t be having dinner. Diet still on.. kinda.

The camel meat probably isn’t as juicy as beef because it has so little fat and very little cholesterol. But then you add the fried onions, bbq sauce, cheese and you get all that fat right back.

I really like camel meat. You can find it sometimes in Lulu.

Do you know how long it requires to cook a camel’s meat? and it is hard to chew, I wonder how will they serve it, maybe bacon’s camel would be delicious..

I remember my mom made a “beef” dish and I enjoyed it, a lot in fact >_> .. Told me few minutes after that it was camel..

Camel burgers have been the rage in the UAE for awhile now, but they have tourism and alot of tourists like to try camel meat for their mid-east experience. What is also very popular is camel milk which is marketed towards the entire Emiriti society. There purportedly will be UAE milk company that will open in Kuwait (well don’t know if they have backed out of the market) and they will market this product in Kuwait.

why would u eat a baby camel, let alone baby anything.just go vegan and save these animals the torture.

So i should eat the plants that absorb co2 and produce o2

And leave the animals than produce co2 and probably methane and absorb o2 ….

I made machboos camel and did a side-by side comparisson with machboos laham. I liked the camel better. It makes a difference how old the camel is and which piece of meat you are getting.

Great to see so much interest in Hashi, it is indeed a surprisingly overlooked meat given its wonderful flavor and superiority to beef and mutton in terms of nutritional value (lower saturated fats, higher iron etc).

We’d like to do more with camel meat and will work on a few ideas over the summer.

Kuwait’s first Hashi Burger launched today, and consists of one Hashi patty cooked the way you like, our special dill & mayo sauce, fresh lettuce and tomato in a bun. It’s priced at 2.650 KD.

We’ve posted some camel meat facts and some background to our burger on our blog https://www.smokehousekw.com/2012/06/04/kuwaits-1st-camel-burger-hashi-special/

As well as the Hashi Special style outlined above, we’re offering the Hashi burger in all our existing burger styles, Classic, Smoke House (the BBQ sauce one) and Mushroom & Swiss.

🙂

Camel meat ain’t chewy when it’s minced or shreded in the form of burger or kebab, as for the taste it is actually much different than beef and definitely lighter but I assume it tasted like beef because of the toppings and spice used
Looking forward to see this out
