Catch Phrases of Kuwaiti Newspapers

A blog reader that goes by the nickname Komsomol posted the following observation in the forum:

I find it hilarious that there is catch phrase words used by Kuwait newspapers and journalists. The result is usually hilarious hyperbolic headlines.

Any criticism for example is always “slammed”:
MP slams government
Kuwait slams Israel’s inhuman practices
MP Dr Ali Al-Hajri slammed the government’s silence towards the statements made by the Minister of Commerce and Industry Ahmed Baqer
Al-Harbi slams commerce minister
Iranian paper slams MoI’s Farsi language channel plan
Clerics slam German magazine
MP slams govt’s incapability
Officials slammed for frequently traveling on ministry’s expense
MP slams govt over disorganized food distribution for Kuwaitis
MP slams education minister
MP Al-Mulaifi slams premier
MP slams Al-Sabeeh

Anything great is always either “hailed”, “praised” or deemed a ‘success’:
Al-Sabeeh meeting hailed
Kuwait reform process hailed
Eight-digit phone system ‘success
WHO praises Kuwait for its efforts to combat smoking
Kuwait praises women’s role

In the cabinet and parliament they only ‘grill’:
Al-Sabeeh may resign if grilled in parliament
Al-Sabeeh grilling proposal
Move to grill premier
Call for grilling
Al-Hajji among ministers expected to be grilled

Any Country ties are always “deep tied” or “deeply rooted”:
Kuwait-Yemen ties ‘deeply rooted,’ says ambassador
Kuwait, Turkey affirm deep ties
Kuwait, Bahrain affirm deep-rooted relations

I think the grilling ones sound hilarious! [Link]

All of these links point to Kuwait Times, so we might actually be reading the headlines written by a single person (usually editor).

So a limited vocabulary is not that strange!

LOL
Back in the day when I tuned in to KTV… they used to have two different pictures for Sheikhs.. one with a “sad” look and one with a “happy” look
The sad one when they make condolences announcements sent here to other countries… whereas the happy one is sent to congratulate them! It would be super funny when they have two back-to-back announcements where you can really see the switch of the picture for the same person… I wonder if they still do that!!!

LOL … Maybe they ought to pick up some word SOUND EFFECTS from the old marvel comic books about the adventures of BATMAN & boy wonder ROBIN.

” SHAZAMMMMM MP to be GRILLED”
” KAPOWWWW Government SLAMMED”
“VOOOHOOOOO” Kuwait PRAISED again ”

LMAO 🙂

Good observation. The papers are playing it safe by acting like a herd! ……..sadly; I think that can go to our stock market participants as well…….

I can’t get enough of their refrain,” discussed bilateral ties between the two brotherly nations,” alluding to the impasse between Iraq and Kuwait on the eve of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. Or was it KTV 2 ? Of this I am less sure.

personally, I slam their writing skill and praise hail and deem Komsomol’s post as a success! As for grilling and deep rooting, I prefer my burgers well done and hold the mushrooms please!
lol..seriously they need to start using a thesaurus!
