Explosion in Ahmadi

A reader who lives in Ahmadi just emailed me telling me he heard what sounded like an explosion awhile and now the air has a weird smell and he can hear emergency sirens in the distance.

It could be nothing (doesn’t Ahmadi always have a weird smell?) but I figured I would post and check here.

Update: Something did happen, read comments (or turn on the tv) for more details.

Update2: Changed headline from “Did anything happen in Ahmadi” to “Explosion in Ahmadi”

Update3: Added a picture from the scene of the explosion. Picture taken from Zoom and there a lot more pictures on their website. [Link]

for some odd reasons i can still a lot of sirens… I doubt that happens when a gas cylinder explodes in ahmadi… living in hawalli

I was right there, passed by to get to a bank 2 lanes across. Then heard this massive explosion and the ground and the entire bank shook. Everyone got out and could see white smoke. First I thought it was the gas station, must’ve been a tanker fueling. But then as we approached the place, bricks, glass and metal were scattered on the road (about 200m from where it happened) and then we saw this building razed to the ground and people trying to get the debris removed.

people are starting to doubt it had anything to do with a Gas Cylinder Explosion but a planed explosion.. lets just hope this isn’t the start of something that will demolish peace in this country.

Allah Yaster.

I wonder if other houses are at risk regarding the same gas incident? They should start awareness campaigns regarding these things and other basic safety tips regarding such hazards.

“(doesn’t Ahmadi always have a weird smell?) ”

what! No way, Ahmadi smells alot better than the rest of kuwait, especially salmiya and other downtown areas.

I second that. If anything one smells, It’d be the flowers from the huge gardens around homes. Well at least then.

Ahmadi is the best place in kuwait ever i think….its very tranquil and quiet..its a whole different kuwait all together…

Toni, Hussainiya is a place where the Shiaa gather to mourn the death of Imam Hussain (the grandson of the propher). Different hussainiyas have different events but almost all of them have lectures that discuss current affairs as well the as verbal illustration of Imam Hussain’s death. They cook in different hussainiyas on several occasions. During the month of Muharram and Safar, it’s a very sad affair and people mourn the death of the different Imams who were killed in battle. Read up on Imam Hussain, even Charles Dickens said something about him.
And this is very sad, but lets hope it doesn’t turn into a parliamentary mess and lets hope they don’t shut down the hussainyas under the excuse of them being a threat to the public.

hello guys,

I heard the eplosion while watching TV at home when it happened, even though my house is a few blocks away, also the windows shook i knew it was something big. The explosion is believed to be from a leak in the gas pipelines of the kitchen in the 7saneyah. In ahmadi gas is distributed using pipelines so thats why the explosion was so big. btw I’ve been living in Ahmadi since i was born in 1988 and you rarely have a wierd smell here.

thanks
