Family Bookshop in Salmiya is sadly closing down for good. I previously posted that they had a court case against the owner of the building but it looks like they lost because they currently have a closing down clearance.
It’s worth passing by the store one final time as a farewell to what used to be one of the best bookshops in Kuwait. Bit by bit what’s left of our childhood is being eroded away which is depressing.
On a similar note Waleed toy store which is located in the same strip is also closing down. Like Family Bookshop, Waleed toy store has been there for over 30 years.

Virgin @ Marina have cleared all their books department by today / All the Classics are also gone. I am wondering if Family Bookshop sells any Classics!
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!
They are not relocating? They are closing down for good!?
That sucks! An entire strip of shops that are now gone for good! Where are the days of shopping in 3alamiya and Waleed, getting a fakhfakheena then ending with Family Bookshop :'(
I feel that our childhood is now officially extinct!
And dont forget tapes from Swan Lake followed by shawerma from Barakat next door
@Mark
The place you mean was called “The Blue Danube”. They used to sell LP records and tapes.
I’m not sure what you’re talking about but the place I’m talking about was called Swan Lake.
They might have changed their name later, but in the 70s it was called “The Blue Danube” and it was owned by a Lebanese guy. This music store was the Virgin Megastore of it’s day and it was right next door to Barakat. Ask your dad.
Blame Obama 😛
No Blame censorship!
I remember buying PS1 games from Waleed, it was the shiz.
I remember buying Sega Games and I used to exchange them if i didn’t like them, beat that.
I used to do that with SNES games but at a different toy store in old Salmiya, I’ve forgotten the name, it was Toy-something I think.
There were 2: Toy World (just a few stores down from Waleed) and Toy Land (further down, where Al-Aqsa the video game store used to be). Oh man. I remember going to Toy Land to look at the 3DO and wish I had one.
I have a brand new 3DO i was thinking of selling
You can buy them for about 2 KD used at Friday market, usually in working order, too. Got games?
pfffft i’m talking brand new in the box. and i do have games as well. also have a brand new snes in the box and my favorite, a brand new neogeo 😀
sad sad sad!
Used to get my comics and pokemon cards from there!
fuk pokemon!
Correct me if I’m wrong, but was’nt the whole old Salmiya strip sold to Saud Sahood, whose turning it into a mega project, as claimed? Let me guess! A mall?
named either after him, his son or father.
That’s so sad! I remember spending many weekends there grabbing the latest Babysitter Books and R.L. Stine stories!
Archie! Don’t forget Archie!
Omggg yeah this is soooo sad! Once i give the news to my older sis im pretty sure shes going to break down to tears :(… Archies and baby sittes club aand goosebumps ;(
As I’m sure you still do.
Well I’m still 15 & I actually felt sad when Chicken Tikka closed down overthere. I used to visit that place everyday when I was small. Sigh 🙁
damn, should have visited Waleed and Family Bookshop :/ guess its childhood places gone without last farewell visit from me
It’s sad but bookstores and music stores are all digital now. I guess it saves trees 😛
It not about digital or paper it about childhood memories spending time looking for books or looking for past IGCSE past papers. Its been four years since ive been there i have to pass by if anything left of it.
and the smell of the place….it smelled like damp paper.
nothing beats being an 80’s child.. I hate how in kuwait there is no consideration for history.
places such as mbarakiya.. old salmya.. youm il ba7ar should never be changed..
Old Salmiya needs to be changed honestly it’s an embarrassment.
Thats sad 🙁
7arraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaam 🙁
