Fire in my building!

We just had to evacuate our office building due to a fire on the 6th floor. We had to walk down from the 21st floor. Will post pics and more later.

Update: I’m back home now so I can post about what happened. Our office is on the 21st floor of Jawhara Tower behind NBK on Fahad Al Salem street. It was around 10:30 I think and I decided to go down to the grocery to get some water. I took the lift and when I got to the ground floor I noticed a small crowd of people gathered outside the lifts but I didn’t think much. I was on the phone with Nataly and when I walked out of the lift area into the main lobby I noticed more people gathered there and I started to hear the fire alarm. I didn’t know what was going so I told Nat I would call her back. I then called one of my workmates up in our office and told him it looks like there could be a fire in the building since the fire alarm is on and there are people downstairs. He asked me what we should do I told him I would come up and talk to him.

So I casually went back into the lift and headed back to the 21st floor. When I was passing the 9th floor I noticed it smelled like fire. I was like WTF? I got to our floor and I started to tell people there was a fire. We weren’t sure if we should evacuate because everything looked normal on our floor. No fire alarms, no smoke, no smell and nothing unusual. So we were thinking maybe it was just a false alarm when someone noticed the elevators area which I had just come up from was now starting to fill up with smoke. That’s when we started evacuating everyone.

The building isn’t fully occupied yet, I think out of the 26 floors only 10 are occupied. We started heading down the fire escape, it was a long way down and for most of it uneventful until we hit around the 10th floor. That’s when we started to notice a bit of smoke. When we got to the 7th 6th floor we noticed the smoke got a lot heavier and that on the fire was on the 6th 5th floor below us. I snapped the picture above which was of the poor building security guard trying to put out the fire.

We decided to cut across to the other side of the building and take the fire escape on the other side since I figured there should be less smoke and water there. When we crossed and got to the second fire escape we noticed it was filled with construction material. Large rocks, pieces of metal, foam, nylon bags… I wish I took a picture. We cleared some out of the way since there were people coming down that fire escape and the trash was slowing things down. There was a line of people going down the escape and it was moving pretty slow since there was a woman who seemed to be exhausted going down and we were all waiting behind her. Someone was helping her go down but it was still just very slow. By the time we got to the second floor I noticed one fireman coming up that fire escape and then finally we got out of the building.

Now that I am home I am thinking of all the mistakes that occurred like why didn’t the fire alarm go off in the whole building? If I hadn’t gone down to the ground floor by coincidence I wouldn’t have heard the fire alarm and I wouldn’t have been able to warn people upstairs. Also usually when there is a fire the elevators stop working and all automatically go down to the ground floor. The elevators in our building actually allowed me to go up to the 21st floor during a fire! Thirdly the fire escapes contained a lot of items in them which made our escape hazardous and slowed everything down. The security guards although were being brave to try and put out the fire shouldn’t have been doing that, if anything they should have been helping people get out. They didn’t have any masks on or proper gear and I am sure they are all now suffering from smoke inhalation. Hopefully they all made it out ok. I didn’t experience that much smoke and I am already blowing out black sooth from my nose. Because they also had the fire escape door open when they were trying to put out the fire, that resulted in the whole fire escape filling up with smoke and making things dangerous for the people escaping.

This all brings me to my final question. The other day the elevators weren’t working in my apartment building so I took the fire escape down. It was dark so I used my phone to light up the way and there were a ton of obstacles in the way which made it very difficult for me to go down. Who can I call to complain to so they can come and check our buildings fire safety? I am sure it’s illegal to fill up the fire escapes with garbage. Below are some pictures I took with my iPhone of the fire in our office building.

Update2: Sorry just proof read what I wrote and noticed a bunch of spelling mistakes and grammar errors. Didn’t have time to do that earlier. Also the fire turned out to be on the 5th floor not 6th.

Wow..I was just reading on another forum about sirens on Fahad Al-Salem street.

BTW, it’s “our office building”. You must have been in a real hurry while making the post.

You mention some really serious issues that must be addressed to those responsible. Perhaps talk to the fire department?

i heard the fire engines from my office near the sheraton and was amazed when i looked out the window that the sheraton delivery trucks woudnt and did not move out of the way for the extra trucks that were trying to get through frantically, they ended up going on the pavement and nearly causing an accident because the ignorant delivery driver would not move.

They need to arrest people who dont moveout the way for emergency services, which i notice alot in kuwait

Just today, when I was going to work I noticed this building and was wondering if its new!

I’m sure you can call the fire department and ask them to check the bulding’s fire system.Whether they take you seriously is another thing because most bulding in Salmiya, have garbage, furniture and what not blocking the emergency staircases. In case you do something and it works let us know.

Since when is your office building occupied? Do you have half yearly or yearly fire emergency evacuation tests??

And sorry on a much ligher note ( i had to ask )is that your leg? Coz that sure looks like your shoes. Really ? thats how you go to work ? ENVY!!

you should stay at home and thank GOD for the blessing of life, honestly you survived by LUCK!!!

al jawhara tower is known to have the best water sprinkler for fire protection in the world, aren’t they activated????? so why did they install them if they are not meant to be activated.

Mark, using the elevator in suspicious situations like that can be catastrophe, if the power is cut (by the firemen or by the fire itself) you would be stuck in the elevator while it is starting to be filled with carbon monoxide, it would be a perfect gas room, so be careful and don’t be so brave next time (hope there is no next time)

Emirates airline announced that due to the fire in al jawhara tower (where their main office is located, they will be closing today, and they encourage all costumer to use their website for reservations.

You’r mistaken Mark…The fire was on the 5th flr rather than 6th..coz…we are on the 6th floor…(Babtain Turnkey Solnt and Wireless Mobile Data).

I recently moved into the 6th floor of the Jawhara tower, and just to get the facts straight, the fire was on the 5th floor, not ours! 😛

We’re on the 9th floor, and I can’t believe there was no alarm. Had it not been for the smoke that reached us we wouldn’t have known. We had to call the building manager several times by the time he actually picked up and told us to evacuate. The staircase was filled with rocks and metal and obviously a lot of water. There were so many things wrong with this situation, but thankfully (I hope) no one was hurt!

wow didn’t think there were any readers in my building. I just fixed the post to reflect the correct floor number which was actually showing in one of the pictures but I hadn’t noticed it.

I guess that’s why the alarm didn’t go off in the whole building cause it wasn’t life threatening situation and it got contained immediatly so they did not need to fill up the building with water through water sprinklers and ruin the offices and computers right?

Moe: So if there is a fire on one floor the building shouldn’t be evacuated? The alarms shouldn’t come on and people should continue to work until their floor catches fire?

@Moe No the alarms didn’t go on at a fault from the building I’m sure. For the smoke to go up 4 floors up it must have been pretty serious. No one was allowed to stay in the building or go in for at least three hours. That’s pretty serious. Fire alarms should go off at a hint of smoke; better be safe than sorry.

Mark – regarding your question on who to complain to. In Kuwait, only commercial buildings have to abide by fire and safety codes, and they include all the normal precautions (sprinklers + detectors + fire escape, etc.)

Before the building can be commercially occupied, the FSD (fire department) do a check of all the fire safety equipment (including triggering the sprinklers on occasion).

Unfortunately, for the elevators to stop, they have to be linked into the central alarm system. You are right, if an alarm is triggered, the elevators must stop and go to a designated floor (called the Fire Recall Floor). If the fire is on the Fire Recall Floor, the elevators go to a secondary designated floor. Once they reach this floor, they do not respond anymore. On most buildings, the FRF is the ground floor.

The rule for residential apartments is a bit lax though. For example, sprinklers are not required, but fire exits are. However, they need not be dedicated fire exits (in other words, one flight of stairs will suffice).

If you have any questions you can contact the FSD or in case of a commercial building, the municipality.

However, expect a lot of headaches and red tape.

We conduct less than quaterly drills in our office and we have trained fire marshalls who inspect and do safety checks every week. You need to do that. Ask the Fire dept. for help, they give regular training and you can write an exam and get certification in basic fire fighting too. Same goes with Emergency Medical Services, each office should have a bunch of people trained. Self help is best help until the real help arrives.

Those sneakers remind of the my childhood. That’s the classic Nike cut; finding this cut in Kuwait is like finding a Needle in a haystack.

You know, you should write a post about your sneaker collection! It would be Joygasmic. Also Mark, would you happen to know who is the dealer for K-swiss sneakers?

I work on the 2nd floor. At first I heard some shouting from below because my office is near the stairwell. It was only me and another kuwaiti guy who realised what was going on. Everyone else in the office seemed pretty calm about it. Then we heard some very faint alarms go off.

Some were even taking the elevators from the 2nd floor down. -_-

I mean if it was much worse people could have easily been hurt/died.

P.S. Nice to see some people here are working in the same building. 😉

Mark,

I used to work on the 5th floor.

Thankfully I have since left Kuwait for Singapore.

I do hope none of my former colleagues were injured.

i worked for an elevator company in q8, all contracts had a default clause of a 100KD payment for the fire-safety seal, the fire dept must certify that everythin is fine.

guess what? over 80% of customers, both residential and commercial, refrained from paying the amount, to save 100KD.

so there you have it, thats why fire-standards are so low in q8.
