First Impression: iPhone 3GS

My iPhone 3GS arrived today from Australia and I’ve been playing with it for over an hour now. I am upgrading from the original (2G) iPhone since I never saw a reason to upgrade to the 3G. The 3GS on the other hand had a decent amount of improvements that was worth upgrading to. Here are my impressions so far:

– It is literally twice as fast compared to my previous iPhone. My favorite game Fast Food boots up much much quicker than before

– Love the new smudge proof screen

– I got internet tethering working which means I can use my iPhone like an eGO

– Can’t get MMS to work (never mind just work, APN, username and pass should be pps)

Voice command surprisingly easy and fun to use. I just talk to my iphone as if its my secretary and it understands commands like cancel or what band is this? when music is playing

– I don’t like the plastic back of the new iphones, I prefer the older aluminum

– 3G is faster than edge, finally I can browse at decent speeds. The BBC low graphics site now loads instantly and every link I click loads in under a second

So basically the new iPhone 3GS is a great step up from the original one. The OS speed difference, the 3G, GPS and the tethering were all worthy enough reasons for me to upgrade.

Hey! Good info.
I’m thinking of getting an iPhone, except I want to order it online. Can’t order it from apple.com and get it to work in Kuwait, can I?
I tried and when you click “Buy Now” it requires at&t info.. advise please?

congrats mark on the new iPhone. sounds interesting. did any one here tried the new Sony Ericsson w995 ?

mark congrats on your new iphone….its a good thing you got it from australia..or you would have spent the crazy prices in kuwait like 379kd in electrozan

congratulations man, and fill us in about the heat issue that’s been on the net since 3GS is released, is it really gets heat up quickly or just a fuss..?
im an iphone guy and im willing to get one soon.

thanks and congrats again 😉

Hey Mark, glad to see you love it as much as I do, For me 32GB is a must since I have all my tv shows and whatnot on there, you have the archos 7 for that. As for tethering, how did you get it to work?

Congrats Mark. Just interested to how much Zain, Wataniya, and Viva charging for 3G data access now? I remember back in 2004 I used to pay around 16KD a month for GPRS with Zain (MTC back then)! I guess I will have to jailbreak my iPhone when I come back to Kuwait in December 🙂

mabrouk mark……from where i can get it in usa? cuz ill travel in 10 days…and not sure about the stores there….is it available in apple stores or best buy or at&t?unlocked ?…thanx

ohyeah: Don’t buy it from the States man, it will be a waste since you got to software unlock the thing and that means no push notifications and from what I saw issues with MMS. When you get back to Kuwait order it from the girl Mark posted about on his blog that lives in Australia.

my sad miserable story with IPHONE………..two years back when i was two years younger than now…… i bought 5 iphones(the original 1) for 420$each…from the states…and sold them in kuwait for 190KD each…and got mine for free +230 profit….after months i was checking apple site..and saw the ad about 3g iphone…which will be released in 15 days for 199!!!!…and fortunately my sister was in usa so it was perfect for me to buy some iphones again !!!!! so in one hour after i saw the ad i sold mine 125kd..(and i was happppppy).it was like the new one very good condition…..and …….marat al ayam…and apple released the 3g iphone!!…woopi……i called my sister and said ……go and buy some iphones!…..after 2 hours..she called back and said heheheheh its locked and they stopped selling it without contract!!!!!…..i was shocked!!…lost my iphone….and the profit….and the 15kd rubber case!!!…now after all these months …i changed more than 5 mobiles…but still missing my iphone…..specially before bed time….i used to upload and watch my movies before sleeping!….and when i workout…my music was playing on my iphone!!!……and when i need to check the temperature my iphone was there for me!!!…..and if im outside..and felt like going to watch a movie in cinema my iphone safari ready all the time!!!…..aaaaaaaaah ahhhhhhh my iphone……i missed u!…like the desert miss the rain…….i miss u hehehehe THE END………….now i cant imagine that i will buy the new 1 3gs!!…its really expensive!!! 250!!!…why!!!…….but i will…i have too!……i need it lol

Also is the australian charger compatible with kuwait power supply, if not pls explain how to, and any addon for the charger pin as chked online its kind of different.
Pls advise.
regards

Thanks mark, but can you advise wht have you put infront of the adapter pins as they are a bit different.

Hey Mark , did uve to pay any customs charges for the phone … im gettin mine from the us so was wondering if would have to pay any….

Ohyeah : I’m actually going to compose a song of ur iphone experience … hilarious dude … mE

Mark…you do not need to restore the iphone if you use the link in 360 dewans blog. It will only change the settings. As for the website you used it will use the same settings for the gprs and the mms which will not work out good.

My ipcc file that i provided to 360 dewan works fine.

mark, mms settings are not pps for everything! try to send it won’t work!
use these settings for Zain:
Zain (Kuwait)

Homepage: https://kw.zain.com
APN: pps
Username: annyway
Password: online

MMSC: 176.0.0.21
Proxy: 176.0.0.65:8080

ma7 i was able to send only when i changed them from what you posted to pps for apn, username and pass.

a problem i came across was that when i have MMS on and go to sent a group SMS, it forces it into group MMS and fails. is there a fix for this dumb shit?

I’ve been using my iPhone normally all day. Few calls, checking my email, browsing. 3G is on. Its 10:15PM and the battery is still 80% full.

I have wataniya
Anyone know how to work the mms on wataniya

P.S I’m not sure about the smudge proof I’m still getting some smudges on my 3gs then again It’s my first Iphone so I don’t know how it does compare with the older modules

Hi Mark,
Can you advise how long did you charge your mobile first time and was it with the usb or wall charger. I will be getting mine today so wanted to know what all to be done once i recieve so that it gives me a better battery life.
Regards

Hi there, I have a quick question and I hope that you reply.

I got my iphone 3gs from Australia too. But I do not have the butoon which allows me to send a mms … I used your posted link and I installed everything and I rebooted then I entered the pps’s … still no (EYE ICON) in the messages application just the send button. Did this happen to you?

Thanks

guys how this Push notification works? i mean i configured my gmail and with wifi/edge/3g when i open mail i get all emails updated. But shouldn’t i get Push and it notifies me when a new mail is there? or how?

I have Wataniya line; I couldn’t configure my iPhone 3Gs to the Internet setting!
And this is my 1st device from iPhone
Is there is anybody could you guide me to fix my device configuration?

Hello guys, I received my iPhone 3Gs reverently from Italy, I have many friends with (Zain) using the Internet connection in their iPhone 3Gs without any problem.
However, I’m Wataniya customer and couldn’t configure my iPhone 3Gs to the Internet setting!
I tried to Google it the setting but I couldn’t find the proper setting.
iPhone 3Gs owner knows to the Internet setting takes many steps and to configure the device properly!
Is there is anybody could you guide me to fix my device configuration?

If I may, coming back to an earlier question about price of iPhone 3gs telecommunication carrier charges, can anyone be more precise. I understand that in Kuwait there are three main telcos Zain, Wananiya and Viva. They all offer prepaid and other forms of contract or billings and, of course, an array of communication formats – local to local (and between carriers), local to international, internet, sms and so the list goes on). Indeed the matrix is not easily compared and I suspect that this is planned. A journalist would do everyone a favour and make the comparisons for all consumers, but so far I have seen such comparisons.

Would anyone like to comment on there plans or cards, costs and usage patterns. Let’s face it getting your iPhone jailbroken and unlocked is only part one. Part two, it working out the most suitable plan with a telco, prepaid or otherwise.

Any comments would be appreciated. Also, what do the Apple stores in Kuwait recommend?

Thanks

Gaz
