Good deal on netbook

I was at Geant supermarket at 360 Mall and noticed they had a really good deal on a Compaq netbook (among other things). If you’re interested hurry up because I noticed these two guys filled up two carts with these netbooks, probably to sell them again at a higher price in Hawalli.

Update: If you don’t know what a netbook is click [here], they’re basically like laptops except smaller.

Update2: The same laptop as above costs KD95 on Amazon without tax or shipping to Kuwait so it’s a great deal [Link]

Err, I’ve had a netbook for 16 months and the specs haven’t changed at all except for a doubling of the harddrive. Nothing else. Windows 7 is about to come out in days and all manufacturers have held off from up grading their hardware. There is about to be a huge jump in performance in these things whilst still being at or near the current price point. So like I said, why would anyone buy one of these now?

Dave: I’ve had my netbook for 14 months and the specs haven’t changed, they’re exactly like this Compaq. There will be just minor speed bumps and longer battery life but thats about it. These netbooks are made for people who are looking for a secondary laptop that will be able to perform 80% of their tasks. They’re just “good enough” and they will always be just “good enough”. If you’re looking for performance you need to look elsewhere.

Why would anyone buy this? Because it’s cheap, light, ultra portable and runs XP.

@Mark, you are completely missing the point. A brand new generation of cheap netbooks is about to hit the market in a matter of days. Still cheap but with vastly improved hardware. When have computers ever stayed so static in hardware terms for so long? Never. Microsoft put a strangle hold on the hardware, but that is about to change. So like I said…

Dave: Computers haven’t stayed static, just netbooks. People realized that they don’t need a faster cpu and the best vga card and 8GB of ram just to browse the internet and send a few emails.

Am not saying nothing new is coming out in the future, there is but the specs are going to be similar and by the time the new generation hits the market, becomes available and the price becomes cheap you will be back telling people to wait and buy the next generation that will come out. Repeat cycle.

@Mark, your post was about netbooks, the other posts are about netbooks, I am talking about netbooks nothing else. Anybody with a netbook knows that they do a job to a certain extent, but I also don’t know anybody who wouldn’t mind streaming decent quality video on them or having a few programs open at the same time without the thing grinding to a halt. We are not talking about up grades coming months into the future, we are talking about the 22nd of October. The new generation of netbooks are simply waiting to hit the shop floor. They aren’t concepts, they aren’t months into the future, they are coming in a week. Every aspect of the netbook will be improved. Everything. And for the same price as now. You’d be crazy not to wait.

Dave: So you’re saying on October 22nd Compaq, Lenova, Samsung, MSI and Asus are all releasing updates? Not only that but they’re all releasing the netbook killer and for just KD78 or less? Sounds cool, can’t wait for October 22nd then.

No, I’m saying that a number of manufacturers have already stated that they are going to release netbooks on or near that date with 11.6″ screens, possibly ion graphics cards, improved cpus, 2/3Gb memory, 320Gb harddrive and Windows 7 for around $400 (or some close variation of those components and price). Given the difference in specs between those and your KD78 netbook, then I would say it sounds cool (if you are a computer nerd), and that it is worth waiting a week or two to get those benefits. But if you want to keep peddling your line, then feel free.

My post is highlighting the fact that there is a really good deal on a very well spec’d netbook that costs only $250 and is available right now, today, here in Kuwait.

You instead are recommending people wait for the newer generation laptops that haven’t been released yet and who knows when will arrive to Kuwait and not only that but at $400 they would also be more expensive then this deal I posted about and probably cost even more once they arrive to Kuwait.

So thank you for informing us that there will be updates in the future, but this post here is about a good deal that’s available today.

Well, as you seem to buy most of your gadgets from abroad, I presume others are capable of doing so as well. KD78 is over $270 – cheap but not that cheap. The $400 netbooks will be the well equipped ones. I’m quite sure there will be cheaper variations that will blow your supposed bargain out of the water – why do you think this offer is available in the first place? There’ll be the same or cheaper netbooks in a week with Windows 7 – surely that is worth the wait alone not even considering the major upgrades that you could get for a $100 or so. You are informing people about this ‘bargain’, I’m informing people that it isn’t quite the bargain you seem to think it is.

You think the supermarket Geant which is the only store in Kuwait thats currently doing this deal on only this one model of the netbook is because there are newer models coming out in a few months?

They’re doing this offer to attract attention. It’s a new supermarket in a new mall and they’re not doing as good as Carrefour so they’re trying to attract people to come with these deals.

Yeah, on the box it says the RAM can be upgraded to 2GB. There were a few boxes left when I was there but I don’t know if they had any more in the back…

Netbooks of this quality and price are sold everywhere in the US. It might be cheaper than normal here, but it isn’t anywhere else, and as you spend considerable time posting about your incoming orders from Amazon, then I think pricing elsewhere is very relevant. And it’s not a few months for the up grades, it’s a week. The major manufacturers haven’t released any new netbooks for a long time now – they’ve all said that they are waiting for Windows 7. Those products will come out straight away not in some distant future, so I’m simply saying that buying a very dated last generation model when massive upgrades are literally days away might not be the smartest move.

@Dave:
The netbook mentioned in the post is a good deal in Kuwait!
For basic users a netbook with Win Xp is still a good investment. ROI for KD78/- is still high on these models. I doubt the models that you mentioned will be available for KD78/- on October 22 or a few months from now. Normally the price goes up when you have a new OS release!!!

You can get netbooks like this for at or near the price listed – those aren’t considered bargain prices elsewhere. If it’s a few dollars more or less in one particular place for a specific model, then big deal as that is not the point I’m making. Even if they are bargain prices compared to netbook prices in the past that is irrelevant because they aren’t going to seem a bargain in a matter of days. that is what I am saying – these netbooks are about to change drastically. If you want last years specs at this price point, then go ahead and knock yourself out. You’ll be able to get the exact same thing with Windows 7 in a few days, or pay a bit more and pretty much get twice the computer. Your choice.

Dave, if you can find us a better deal anywhere else then please share with us the location or web address so I could tell everyone.

thank you, please come again!

@Dave
Case in Point, when ever there is a new OS release the different brands are forced to hike their prices courtesy Microsoft!
We are talking about KUWAIT, where everything is costlier than the US, so this deal is not cheap if you are elsewhere. In Kuwait it’s a good deal.

Please come again? Dear me.
You seem to be ignoring my point. NONE of these netbooks represent a good deal anymore. If one is $30, $50 or $100 more or less, it doesn’t matter. They represent very old technology and are about to be replaced in days. What is so hard to understand about that? We aren’t talking minor upgrades here, we are talking huge improvements in all areas. If someone doesn’t want to wait, fine, but it might help others to make a more informed decision.

@Name is Bond,

As far as I’m aware, the upgrade to Windows 7 won’t affect pricing. Netbook pricing will remain netbook pricing despite the change in OS and huge changes in specs. The current netbooks are very, very dated. That is a fact. They are about to be hugely improved at similar price points to the netbooks currently on the market. That is also a fact. It’s your choice what purchase you make, but a bit of knowledge of what is just around the corner never did anyone any harm.

@Dave:
as far as I know the prices of the components has gone up due to two reasons, the release of windows 7 and the upcoming Gitex exhibition. If you are still unaware, check the component prices, some of them has really gone over the top.
Please enlighten us with a weblink which states that the better specs are going to cost the same!

Well Mark, here’s your computer for $275 with a 6 cell battery:
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152122

Like I said, netbooks are around this price now, and are about to see major changes. Just as you wouldn’t buy a new mac 15 days before one of their Tuesday press conferences (unless you want to run the risk of buyer’s remorse), people need to consider carefully whether it’s the right time to buy one of these considering what is about to happen.

Dave that’s a link to an msi laptop. The deal above is an HP Compaq, it’s a different company dude at least read the model number on the picture I posted.

Why would a technology exhibition mean that prices are going to go up? The new netbooks are obviously going to cost more than these ones. I haven’t said any differently. What I have said is that the new ones will represent far better value. Every product that I’ve seen mentioned that is going to come out with the major improvements are expected at around the $400 price point (maybe a little more for the 11.6″ netbooks, maybe not). $50 more for the ion card – the one thing that will really make a massive difference to performance. No doubt, prices will fall rapidly. It’s a lot more computer for your money.

Also Dave the msi u posted to is like the one I have which is 14-16 months old. The HP Conpaq I posted about came out this past July it’s like a 3 month old model…

I know it’s a different model. So what? These netbooks have the exact same specs. Theone I posted has a better battery. For crying out loud, Compaq is the bargain basement brand for HP these days, so what is the issue? I’m comparing apples with apples.

@Name is Bond,
And so you can – as I just posted in the link. If you read my post again, you’ll notice that I was talking about current models, not the ones about to come out.

@ Name is Bond,

“to make promotions at the exhibition” means that prices will go up. Sorry, you’ll have to explain that one to me.

Dave I think you’ve lost it buddy. The deal i posted bove is for the recently released hp compaq, you’re comparing it in price to an msi that came out 16 months back and costs the same after a mail in rebate.

Now add tax to the msi and shipping costs to Kuwait and you end up with a price tag of 110kd for a laptop that’s been around for over a year.

In just supports my point that the deal I’ve posted is really good.

@ Name is Bond,

It doesn’t imply anything. It states that the current netbooks will be priced the exact same way they are now but with Windows 7 instead of XP. If you want to get one with the much better specs, then they will no doubt cost around $400 or so – the price that is being mentioned pretty much everywhere.

But a netbook is not designed for high end gaming and video editing!! Why would anyone pay a higher price for a netbook, when they can get a proper laptop for the price range you are talking about!

@ Mark,

I haven’t lost anything. I don’t care about shipping to Kuwait. I made the point that the price wasn’t anything special – that it was run of the mill for the US and I just demonstrated that was the case with the link (most US purchasers don’t need to pay tax for an online purcahse). That Compaq has the exact same specs as every other netbook. It doesn’t make any difference if one came out 12 months ago or 12 weeks ago – they are basically the exact same computer (the MSI actually has better specs). That is the entire point of all netbooks these days – they all have the exact same specs give or take a couple of very minor differences, so your point is entirely moot.
As I seemingly keep needing to say over and over again, NONE of these old netbooks now represent a good deal even if you think they are well priced.

@Name is Bond,

Good grief. If you can basically get twice the netbook for $100 more what exactly is the problem with that? The new ion netbooks will be able to play plenty of games, play HD video, do some editing, have more than one or two apps open at the same time without getting bogged down, a FAR superior operating system etc. etc. You will have a netbook that is not a great deal less powerful than the current 13″ Macbook Pro for a fraction of the cost. I’d hazard a guess that that will appeal to plenty of people who currently have netbooks and those who previously viewed them as under powered.

As far as i know, it costs companies $$$ to put OS on their computers, i don’t believe a Windows 7 Lapotop will be less than $300 Dollars, at least NOT with high specs.

higher cpu+ram+capicity always *equals* more $$$.

who needs a higher spec netbook? thier netbook for gods sake! they run smooth and that’s it!

and for everyones information, windows 7 isn’t really that light weighted, i have Ultimate running on my desktop, maybe a home basic version could be smoother.

@Nora,

I have Windows 7 running on my netbook. It runs OK as did XP, though you can’t do anything remotely demanding on these things. What you CAN do on them is about to change greatly and as far as I’m concerned that is a very good thing indeed.

And from my experience, most manufacturers don’t up their prices when they bring out new products – Apple, for example, just upped their products whilst reducing the prices. New, better spec netbooks will be a bit more expensive, but that is only because the current ones are heavily discounted because they are all using 18 month old technology

@ Name is Bond,

Many of the new ones will have an 11.6″ screen. That is enough to do casual gaming. In fact, a 10″ screen is more than enough to play games on from time to time or don’t the PSPs, Nintendo DSs, iphones etc. etc. of this world exist?

I’m getting the point fine thanks. A number of you seem to think it’s a good deal. I think it’s a discounted end of the line computer, a computer that hasn’t changed in 16 months and that is about to get a massive revamp in a few days. If the absolute maximum you’ve got to spend is KD 78 and you don’t want Windows 7, then fine, go out and buy it. If you want Windows 7 and you fancy a netbook with FAR superior specs in the very near future for a relatively small difference in price, then you’d be well advised to save your pennies.

Dave the laptop thats selling for KD78 is just 3 months old. The MSI Wind you linked to which was more expensive is 16 months old. Don’t confuse the two.

It also seems you know someone at Intel and he’s given you a sneak peak at their future products lol

MSI will launch netbooks using Intel’s next-generation Atom Pineview processors in December 2009 according to Digitimes. The Intel Pine Trail platform launch has been pushed back from October 2009 to Q1 2010, but the report says that MSI is planning to launch their netbooks ahead of schedule to avoid competition. This means the company would not need to compete on price.
The new netbooks will use the Windows 7 operating system and also come with touchscreen displays. MSI’s peers, such as Asus and Asustek, will be sticking with Intel’s schedule according to the report.

Dave all the new intel atom (maybe even atom duo) with win 7 and 2 gb ram will be 500 dollar STARTING price. they will reach 700 dollar with multi touch screen. so its not going to be the same price.

@ Mark,

I’m not confusing the two, you are. You keep saying that this is a new computer. In what way is it new? It’s a slightly changed version of the model that HP has been selling for a long time. It has no upgraded features compared to your MSI (note I said YOUR MSI as I knew you had one) and basically no new upgraded features compared to what they were selling before. If you consider that a new computer then fine, but as far as I’m concerned if a computer is released 12 months after another one with the exact same specs, it doesn’t represent an improvement and that is why I compared them – they have the same components! Why do you care that one came out more recently than another? It doesn’t make any difference at all.

@Gunsmoke,

You are right up to a point – it isn’t important. However, I don’t think I’m exactly arguing about it – I’m trying to clarify a few points and explain why even though this thing may appear to be a bargain (at least for Kuwait), it doesn’t actually represent a particularly good deal. If others think it is a good deal, then good for them, they should go out and buy it, but like I said, people need to be aware of what is just around the corner. The new products aren’t going to be KD78 as soon as they come out, but they are going to represent far more bang for your buck.

Dave – I guess you aren’t buying it, so let others decide if they want to buy it or not. Not everyone cares for Windows 7 and if you are at anyway familiar with the Kuwait computer market, it lags about 2-4 months behind whatever is released in the US when it comes to the latest gadgets and local availability, nevermind the price which is inflated on average 30%.

No doubt that Windows 7 will open the floodgates for a lot of products that manufacturers are waiting to release in conjunction with the new OS – none of those products will reach the Kuwait market on 22nd October. For those people that do not buy products online (the majority of “hawalli users”) – this is a good deal for someone not interested in Windows 7; which is 99% of the Kuwait general computer market.

Geant is probably clearing out stock, and there is nothing wrong with advertising this deal for those still looking for a cheap backup/travel laptop with Windows XP.

That IS a great deal. Would’ve run for it if I didn’t have a netbook.

But like Mark said, if people were buying in wholesale (carts-full), then I guess there wouldn’t be any left.

@Dave
يبه خلاص انا بشتريلك كمبيوتر وطاوله بعد ولا تزعل
بس هد اعصابك يبه ترى شقيتنا بهاللغوه

I can’t believe Dave spent this much effort trying to justify that this is not a great deal.
Yes, dual core atoms with Ion graphics are on their way with Windows 7 but the price of admission is definitely going to be in the $500 range. This is good for people who just want to browse and do general Office related tasks like word,excel,powerpoint etc.
Actually, it does a very capable job of playing DivX movies so it can act as a portable media player while travelling.
So 78 KD is a very very good deal. Just 2 months back, I bought a Acer netbook for my son with more or less the exact same specs for KD 110/-

Windows (or winblows, rather) is a load of crap… every once in a while they’ll market a new operating system so they can make ridiculous amounts of money out of poor customers. I don’t understand what the Windows 7 fuss is all about. I’ve been running it on a VM for over a month now (MSDNAA/ELMS license), and like I said, it’s a load of crap. It’s the same shitty core wrapped in a slightly different interface…

@Anonymous,
You are obviously not an IT guy.
Windows OS is what runs more than 90% of the world’s computers – and it does so for a reason. Of course, there’s no point in explaining those reasons to rabid fanboys – because they see only what they want to see.

Was wondering if there was a way to get rid of old laptops here in Kuwait. This service is prevalent in the west and we can get trade-ins at like PC World (UK) or Best Buy (North America). I would prefer selling them ofcourse but open to trade-in deals as well. Apologies to go off topic. The netbook actually reminded me about it.

Mark – you are doing a wonderful job posting the deals you see and thanks for this. People can research prices and future release outlooks on the net and decide wheter they want to grab it or not. It appears a slew of new HP full function notebooks are being readied for release around Christmas These are forecasted to shakeup pricing on the netbook market or sound a death knell for some lines of netbooks.

Actually cajie, 90% of the world’s computers are embedded systems, which there’s no way in hell that winblows, being the resource hog that it is, can run on them**. Plus, the vast majority of web servers (60%-90% according to various reports — 60% being the smallest percentage I’ve seen) run Linux or BSD (and that includes the server on which mark248am1.wpenginepowered.com is running). In other words, the backbone of the internet, THANKFULLY, does not run on winblows. But I’m assuming you meant that 90% of personal computers run winblows, which I never denied or even talked about in my original comment, so I’m not exactly sure what you’re trying to say here…

** with very few exceptions (like PDAs and smartphones).

When all you need to do is keep in touch with family , check your emails and nothing else.. KD 78 is a steal

Anonymous,
I am saying that I am glad you are not in our IT department 🙂

You will probably change us all to Mac OS or linux and then when everybody logs into their computers and finds that all the business applications throw an error message “OS not supported”, you will go “ooops..sorry guys – you have to close down your business because the new OS is far too advanced for your current business”

I don’t even know what you mean by embedded systems – unless you are referring to my toaster.

The only problem in my opinion is that the netbook doesn’t have a DVD RW or blueray but other than that it is the best hardware to get by far in the market as it is light, powerful in terms of internet browsing and e-mails and also they are in creasing in memory. I wouldn’t be surprised if after a year or so the memory increases to 500GB or 1TB.

cajie: Congratulations! You can search for articles on wikipedia!

So let’s go over our comments, shall we?

1. I made a comment about how crappy Windows is.
2. You come and say “Oh, you’re obviously not an IT guy” (blah, blah, blah), and claim that “Windows OS is what runs 90% of the world’s computers”.
3. I clarified to you that 90% of the world’s computers are embedded systems (vs. desktop systems), and that these systems don’t run winblows on them. I also explained that at least 60% of web servers on the internet run on BSD or Linux. I wonder why they don’t run Windows…
4. You once again veered off-topic, this time calling me a Mac/Linux fanboy in a bit of a ramble. Once again, I’m not sure how that makes a response to the statement/fact I made earlier (that what runs the internet is pretty much Unix(-based) systems, and not winblows).

You keep pushing the topic sideways so that you can come on top, but I’m afraid that’s not gonna work.

@Dave .

Dude ? Wtf ? What’s your problem now ?

You say these are outdated and ppl should wait for your “NEW” 400$ netbooks and there ain’t any use buying them .

Not everyone wants a fucking 300GB HDD and your Goody-Goody GENUINE Windows 7 .

When a deal is on , we all would Surely buy it . It’s enough for me to Music , Run GTA Vice City , Facebook , Blog and Photoshop .

That’s what it is for . You got some HIGH config expectations for some fucking HD Video Editing or running Crysis , You may buy an Alienware or a Vodoo .

The current Netbooks are enough for the common people who just Music , blog and tweet .

So , STFU , NOW (:

@Krishna,

Good grief. I’m not telling you what to do, do what the hell you like, though it would appear you need to grow up for a start.

Pointing out that big changes are just around the corner isn’t telling people what to do, is it? It’s giving a different perspective, and considering some posters didn’t even know what a netbook was, that might not be such a bad thing.

Think what you like about the current netbooks, but I actually have one and know that they are far from enough if you actually want to do a number of things AT THE SAME TIME.

So no, I won’t STFU, and you can do us all a favour and cut out the big man behind a keyboard routine.

Geant is offering a 10% discount for all Laptops tomorrow i.e. on Friday. The discount is in the form of a Voucher which can be redeemed from 1st of Nov. For those who missed the earlier offer, can buy the Netbook at KD 80 (KD 88.9 X 0.9) tomorrow i.e. at 2 KD higher than the earlier offer.
Note: Geant has advertised 10% discount on Mobiles, Laptops and Cameras for 3 days starting today. But in reality, the discount is being offered only on Mobiles today, on Laptops tomorrow and on Cameras the day-after.
