GTFO!

I just read a post by Coquette on a conversation she had with her hairdresser at Sloans in which her hairdresser told her that Kuwait has no culture and no one here has a life. A lot of pretty trashy talk basically. Check out Coquette’s post for the full conversation. [Link]

no not trashy, that’s the truth

but i think Coquette is act this story

c’mon guys can you believe this dialog occur between a kuwaiti and expat?!

zoomzoom i can honestly see a conversation going that way.. that chick had some sort of issue going on.. its weird.. something must have been going on with her.. but all the expats I know that have lived in Kuwait for over 10 years tend to like it here..

Its her loss because that just shows that she really didn’t learn much from being abroad..

this is not something new. I personally had my share of “expat rant”! But then again, I think that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and they could express it in any way they want. Some people like it here, some people don’t. That’s the case everywhere else in the world. It’s a matter of having the balls to do something about it and not to just sit around and complain.

christ i wish i could get my 5 wasted minutes back from reading this shite. a retarded english girl vs a kuwaiti equivelent of a valley girl…it doesn’t get dumber than this.
i feel my IQ just dropped a few points. motherfuck them both to hell.

I’ve been living out of Kuwait for the las 9 years, and I miss it! I live in a country where drinking and sex are every where!! Yes we have culture here, but it’s not so much better than it was in Kuwait. I do love Kuwait with everything it ever offered me!! I hope I’ll be able to be back on it’s soil some day! I’m proud of it! I hope the young Kuwities would show that stupid English girl!!

yeah and I’m sure you have a life cutting hair!

like you’re curing cancer or something , go back to Europe with you’re high school diploma lets see how they will treat you there you dump bitch!

zoomzoom why are u such a pessimistic fuck…

Why would you assume some random person would go around making random stories up like that. Have respect for other people, not everyone is a sadistic wanker that makes up storied for attention like yourself.

Sounds like she’s just unfairly comparing her ‘real’ home with her ‘adopted’ home, talking about things that are in the UK which aren’t in Kuwait. But she’s just not doing it very eloquently.

Meanwhile… back in London… there are probably hundreds of Kuwaitis bitching about having to pay a ton for parking, not finding enough maids to beat up or molest, having to put litter in bins, etc. etc.

P.S. TweeZ: how can we make Holla the president/prime minister/Emir (sorry… not sure how the policitcal fuck up in this country works…)

I’d vote for him! Even if he wasn’t slim, shaved or even slightly homoerotic!

This is so stupid.
We all know that Lisa is right in many things. You all complain about Kuwait, so there most be something wrong. I see so many unhappy souls in Kuwait, but for some reason we stay, maybe because we don’t know if the new place we choose is much better.
“Life is a box of chocolate, we never know what we gonna get”.
One thing I know for sure, Lisa have had a lot to struggle with in Kuwait and so do I as an European. Kuwait is slow, big lack of creativity, culture activity, many Kuwaiti are rude and cruel and your known for it, but you dont care, so that mean we shouldnt speak up? And you are showing it right now on this page. Lisa are a good person and if she had a bad costumer I am sure she don’t make it in to blog . So please grow up and face the music, people can have a bad day and be feed up of this country just like the rest of us, but it don’t make her a bitch or a bad person. Yes I know that it is not nice to talk bad about Kuwait in front of you, but how are we going to make a change, if we don’t discuss the problems?
Lisa has my full 100% support and I am truly shocked over these comments.

no in kuwait we have culture and more then europe, in kuwait we are more educated.
well if u are raised in a place which has diffrent values then kuwait and you like it that much and it makes u think that u have no culture then i`m sorry for you

Your are right, there is culture. And I am maybe one of the few who have the opportunity to live it everyday. All my friends are Kuwaiti and I spend all my free time with them. And I dont think Dubai is better, my friends there never interact with the local’s. I am here in Kuwait to learn about your culture, but if i didnt have good friends, who would show me? Remember most of the expat work their ass off, 10 -12 hours a day, 6 days a week. In a system who dont embraze the work we are trying to do, everything is slow and a coverment unorganized. I know you cant do anything about it, but you can start with your self. Why do I need to feel like I am about to die every time I drive in Kuwait. Why do I have to drive with pepper spray because I am not left alone? Why do I see garbage every where in Kuwait? Why cant I get work permit easy? And belive me you do need Designer’s here!! Dont misunderstand, I do see a country changing slowly, but still with it’s head in the sand…

Perhaps heritage is the word.

You cannot forget that European countries have been built on many hundreds of years of historical foundation, so it’s obvious that when Europeans come to the Middle East – they find the region devoid of any style or panache (which if we are honest, bar Lebanon, is 95% true).

London, for example, has buildings in existence which are many hundreds of years older than the entire state of Kuwait.

Whilst Europeans were busy building impressive architectural masterpieces back in the 17th Century, Arabs were chilling (or should that be sweating) in the deserts and living like nomads.

We are catching up albeit at a much slower place. Probably around 10 years from now I anticipate you will see a complete reshuffle in the personality of Kuwait as we know it.

Ultimately, Lisa has an opinion, and offensive or not, they should be respected.

Freedom of Speech is an entitlement that all residents of Kuwait (local or not) should and must have.

moocherx we have culture we have traditions and we have heritage
and u dont need to be insultive
and i`m not in any way deluded as you claim

jane

I would rather have a Hair dresser with a highschool diploma than a Kuwaiti with an MBA who sits on his ass all day long in DAWAM drinking coffee and reading the newspaper, at least she is earning a living and not sitting on her ass waiting for money to roll in.

And to all the others … Pearl Diving and trade routes are not culture .. culture is something within people …not about history , so far Kuwait’s culture is hmmm let’s see going to malls, buying cars, spending huge amounts of time flirting around with girls, oh and yeah admitting that there are somethings wrong int heir country but they wont do anything about it …

I would definitley start calling Kuwait a good country to live in, when the chance of a Kuwaiti telling an Expat “I am Kuwaiti i can kick you out whenenver i want” seizes to exist …. or give me her name i have connections with the ministry i can shut her down and send her back to her country …

And you claim to have culture

I beleive this whole story is a joke. And I do admit we have some major problems at home, but this is a big time arab thing, Arabs are hypocrits. We do everything in secrecy and we try to show the rest of the world we are angels. All arabs do it. WE ARE HYPOCRITS, we invited hypocracy. Enough Said.

and i wish more people talk and act like Toxy ..this way you wouldn’t need more time to get a culture u would have it already

Well, one arguement has started a thousand battles. Lets face it, no where in the world is perfect. No where in the world is completely void of vault, so Kuwait to some has no culture, and to some it does, people are entitled to an opinion, however in sayng that they should also have the respect and decency to express that opinion in a respectful manner and not supress it onto one person. Maybe it was a bad day or a bad week it still holds no excuse. I have many expat friends in fact most are, i have grown up surrounded by expats and kuwaitis my whole life, teachers/friends/family. I agree completely with Toxy’s statement however dont forget if “Lisa has an opinion, and offensive or not, it should be respected,” then the same applies to the person sitting in the chair. The truth is no matter what opinions are expressed when you start talking about people’s homes and cultures you start walking a road that has no ending.

Dear Toxy,
I was waiting for your reply. I read your piece in Bazaar Magazine and I am a huge fan of what you wrote. I am a designer on my 4th year in Kuwait, and face every day a battle with mediocrity.
I do belive in Kuwait or I would not have stayed, but I also know the war Lisa has been fighting for her business and all the work she put in to it. Having to face every day spoiled Kuwaity women ( I challenge any one to do the same) with their problems and attitude to wards service men and women. I would have spoke my peace too.

Yes you have a country with culture, but the I think the money has gone to your head. Money dont give you the right to act like monkey’s and spoild brats.

LMFAO..

Both these chicks must not have gotten any in awhile.

By the way, A high school diploma from the UK trumps an MBA from Kuwait University! A certificate in hairdressing = a Phd from KU.
Are degrees from KU even recognized outside of Kuwait?

HeHeHe I got my masri to take courses for me, habebtee.. He works for me at the ministry these days. Now cut my hair.. you peon..

I strongly disagree with anybody who says that Kuwait or even any other arab country has more culture and heritage than Europe; that might be true some 1000 years ago. But today, that’s just a joke.

Yes, you had culture, but not anymore, because alot of the new generation Kuwaitis just don’t give a damn about it, and you know it.

Somebody said that Kuwaitis are more educated, yes, the ones who go to Europe and the US and earn their education from there are well educated. But the ones who stay here, I don’t know about them so I won’t say anything about them.
Don’t get me wrong, I met a Kuwaiti girl once and we played basketball, I noticed that she was intelligent, humble just from the way she talked to me. By the way, she was the daughter of a former Kuwaiti ambassador to Italy, in case you wanted to know.

Now, let’s move on to the way they treat foreigners, I’ll go straight to the point, they treat Europeans and North Americans (Canadians, and Americans) like kings, and ALOT of them treat Asians or any other third world country like dirt, but they know they can’t send them back to their countries because who’s gonna work as maids, cleaners or as cashiers at Mcdonalds, Dunkin Donuts, Pizza Hut, Fridays, Sultan Center… etc, Kuwaitis??? You must be joking with me.

I’ll tell you this, if I see a Kuwaiti guy or a girl working at Burger King as a cashier, I’ll respect that guy/girl more than any other Kuwaiti even if that kuwaiti has a masters degree in computer science, and if you ask me why, then I’ll tell you that you’re naive.

To sum things up, I’m not claiming that it’s like heaven in Europe and America, on the contrary, I admit that they have alot of problems including racisim, crime, social problems…. etc, But atleast they admit that it exists, and they are doing something about it, and not just defending themselves with emotions instead of using logical thinking.

If I have offended anybody, I’m sorry, but these are the facts.

u want facts ok i agree with nael with some points. racisim exists in kuwait degradation well. but poeple please you cant judge kuwaities from the people u see in marina mall hanging around in the food court.

for starters, there seems to be some sort of annoyance by some of the locals of an expat crticisising kuwait.Lets clear that out of the way first of all.Anyone who lives in kuwait and is an active member of society has the right to bitch and moan and complain without having it thrown in their face that ” if you dont like it,leave” that we keep hearing. Also, lets be frank: most of us here are annoyed that kuwait is full of rich uneducated morons who drive around all day in fancy cars, just like we would be as annoyed at the same sight anywhere else. Yes,there is a lot wrong here and once again I am assuming that most(not all) of us would rather the country was a lot more open with wine bars, clubs, real concerts and theatre to go to and to chill out without having to be in someones house or chalet.
yes, lisa was harsh and possibly having a bad hair day (cheese),but as toxy pointed out, it is her rightto have an opinion, especially one that was expressed to one person who she knows quite well. I am sure that had she known her comments were going to be embellished and comented on,she wouldnt have made the same exact arguments. After all, there is such a thing as privacy and our role as bloggers isnt to just nail people to the wall.Otherwise we become the same as the dudes in saudi with the sticks who wack anyone who doesnt fit into what they consider appropriate dress or attitiude.

the reason i posted a link to lisas rant with the title GTFO! is to show people who think i whine on kuwait too much what real whinnying and complaining is lol

oh HAHAHAHAHAHA she shut off her anonymous commenting now!! another weak lil POS that can’t handle the pressure.

i was going to post about how the only ppl that really get offended and outraged over dissing kuwait are wannabe-kuwaiti bidoons or long term arab expats that feel they need to compensate by being needlessly patriotic and arse-kissing the govt.

Ahlein your are the best..
I like the part of Saudi and sticks. One for the record, I have been Lisa’s client for 3 years, and God did I complain to her…over and over again. Imagen you have to lissen to all sort of women all day with bad hair. For sure I dont want to be in her shoes one minute. Not even with me…

One more thing, why dont we all use these blogs to something productive and make a demonstration in front of the parlament to promote alcohol stores in Kuwait for expats? So we can have some fun… with out getting robbed by Mr. Walker?

No-Culture

at least Kuwaitis have enough respect for them self to study most of there life and get MBAs to relax when they are older and work nice easy hour jobs , better than having been getting drunk and having drugs all my life and when I’m 30 start working as a hair dresser with no future what so ever , i promise you if she has better job she wouldn’t feel that bitter, something tells me thats the reason she’s mad not that Kuwaiti people has no couture ,why the hell are you mad about that are you the head of Kuwait’s culture council or something , so retarded!

dfineline nobody told her to be a hairdresser in kuwait if she didnt wanna hear all the moaning from us..

i lived in london my whole life and i love it but there is now way that the UK has more culture than kuwait.. if you wanna see culture in kuwait dont look at the spoilt teenagers that you see in malls, go look at thier families and thier homes and what goes on in the house, thats where you will see culture..

its true the teenagers here hav no culture but its just a phase, i know alot of ppl who went through that and are now settled down.. teenagers just wanna hav thier fun but belive me we hav more culture than the UK. and dubai, okii dubai is nice but only for tourists, the emarati ppl dont like it as much..
girls getting harrased, raped, drunk and sleeping around doesnt sound like culture to me..

i dont wanna sound bad, i love london i see it as my 2nd home and would love to be baq but when you are talkin about culture dont even think about the UK..

to the ones talking about Kuwait’s lack of culture:
Have You ever been to a dewaniya? a real dewaniya? I guess not.

U can’t judge a society becoz the kids at the mall looked stupid..
its like me hating europe and claiming they’re culterless, coz their train stations are filled with homeless people.. its just stupid.

I can’t believe how most of u think kuwaitis are mostly undereducated and get their paychecks without working. all the people I know work their ass off, day in and day out. they’re highly educated and smart. (or atleast the people I CHOSE to be around are).
You can’t just take a portion of the society and then judge us all based on them.

our democracy as flawed as it is, is better than the whole arab world combined. that is culture for you.
our generosity and donations to tens of countries everywhere….
our hospitals treating hundreds of thousands of expats for a tiny fee!
I can go on and on AND on….

EVERY single expat I’ve met in Kuwait and outside.. prefers Kuwait over any other country (aside from his home country ofcourse) doesn’t that count? doesn’t it say anything about how great Kuwait is?
I’m not saying we’re perfect or near perfection.. but compared to our neighbrs and the Middle east we’re damn close!

I don’t have a problem with criticism, but people please.. to go as far as saying Kuwaitis have no culture?

One more for the record, I never said Kuwait didnt have culture, I said there is a lack of culture activity. All my friends are Kuwaiti and I have experience your culture many times. The people here are very hospitable and friendly, and I am very greatful for living here.
But dont forget that a lot of expats dont have this opportunity. And tell me what is left, Marina mall, Starbucks and some resturant where you cant enjoy a bottle of wine with your meal?

Let us be completely honest, I dont think we should judge Kuwait from some spiky guys in Marina Mall, neither should we judge a out spoken hair dresser from UK. I dont think Uk is better than Kuwait or Dubai. (I had the choice to move to Dubai, but I dident , because I think Kuwait is far better.)
But If you are alone in this country it is not cool. You Kuwaiti are lucky, you have a coverment who takes good care of you and big families who supports you.
And I learned alot from this, In EU we move out of the house when we are 15 and up, our grand parents are left alone at a nursering home. I never said EU was better, but I am saying that it is hard to be an expat in Kuwait.

I think you need to loosen up a bit, take it easy. Dont take it so serious when we comment or write comics in newpapers. Relaxe and use your energi to change it for the better. And we will help you with what ever we can. I am good at writing big Posters for our demonstration…!!!

DfineLine, I agree with You.. “I never said Kuwait didnt have culture, I said there is a lack of culture activity.”

but what is it with You guys and alcohol? I mean when you first came to Kuwait, were u misled? or tricked in anyway? I mean u came to Kuwait knowing that there are no frickin alcohol in the country..
don’t give us the “alcohol is available everywhere,, might as well legalize it”.. U can’t go around thikning like that!! cocaine is available.. wanna legalize that too?
every country has it set of rules.. we must respect that. and MOVE ON.

Jane,

I’m not from UK. But as far as I know, tartan that was hot last year is part of UK’s couture. Preppy style. Victorian blouse. The Brits are pretty stylish. In fact I think people here are so crazy about it, otherwise you wouldn’t see so many UK’s clothing store here.

Did the comments suddenly turn into fashion commentary? Couture vs Culture?

This has been fascinating and boring at the same time… On one side of the boxing ring we have a bored expat who lashed out after 11 years of pent up anger (I seriously admire self-control that lasts that long) about Kuwait being boring yada yada yada… and on the other side we have Kuwaitis who can’t begin to understand what life is like for expats here.

Yes, she was wrong to judge Kuwaitis by a few mall rats at Marina Mall (in the food court no less!).. but its also wrong for us to get so defensive without offering real answers.

The UK has less culture? That’s a tad unfair.. In London alone, the number of exhibitions, music, art, sports events each week is overwhelming. Their museums should be listed as wonders of the world! But that’s just London (and a few other big cities). The rest of the UK could be a suburban nightmare for all we know, straight of out Little Britain or the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

We are a small country, and we do have cultural events commensurate to our size and of course we could use more, and to compare us culturally to the UK – OF ALL PLACES!! – is insane. But like someone said earlier, the majority of the people here are simply not interested. There are many cultural activities available, and the turnout is often disappointing, maybe due to poor pre-event publicity. I don’t know

We do have the potential, we just need to get our act together.

Finally, you thought this frustrated Brit girl was bad? Haven’t you heard Kuwaitis vacationing in Cairo complain about Egyptians year after year? Now THAT I find even more appalling!

Santa
Yes your right I knew that Kuwait was non alcohol/drug country. And the first 3 months was dry for me personly. But after 3 years I am almost become a alcoholic and I promise you when I move I will not want to see another bottle of Red label. This is fine, but if you want to enjoy a meal with a nice bottle of red wine, you cant.

I think that Kuwait would be fare better off with a system like Abu dhabi, with lincens and small stores for expats. Then it would be nice to enjoy our stay and simulate a normal life away from home. If you travel to Paris, dont tell me you dont go to an Arab resturant to enjoy your favorite meal? It dosent meen you will eat so much that you will trow up on the street and act like a indulged fat ass…

Let us be frank, Kuwait needs to relax and stop beeing so afraid. In Norway we where protesting for a long time against Kebab and curry, now we have a vibrant city where we embraze the diversity of different culture’s. I dont say you dont, but dont close the door to the future.

Call me selfish, but I love my country and IMO we’re not ready to relinquish control of alcohol. its against our religion and I personally think we’re better off.
But, I’m all for making Failaka (a kuwaiti island) an open place, where You can find alcohol. to attract tourism and what not.

Now, about the arabic food, I NEVER eat anything related to arabic food when I’m on vacation… not even indian food (coz its kinda reminds me of our Kuwaiti food).. but thats not the point ๐Ÿ˜›

nope, alcohol shouldnt be legalized here..
i like it that we dont hav it in our country. if you want it that badly go to any other country and hav it or buy it from those freaks who sell it here for like 60KD..
but as far as legalizing it, it will never happen..

Santa

Guess what you will attract in Failaka, a lot of Kuwaiti who will drink and drive boats at the same time. That will be fun…
I respect the religion aspect of the argument. One thing I dont understand. as part of your religion it is not aloud to see kissing/love making on television. But chopping a person head of is ok…

For your information I have started to read the Koran (in english)just to figure out what it is all about…and hopefully learn someting. Personally I am a none beleiver, Atheist as we say..

You know when we were kids and a kid does something bad, the parent punishes him. when the punishment takes place infront of us, it’ll make us think twice before doing something bad in the future… its just that simple!
when someone rapes or kill a person and then get executed in public, it’ll leave a bigger impact on the weak souls.. they’ll think a 1000 times before doing something stupid.
and as a member of this society Im gonna feel more safe and secure when the rapist/murderer gets his dues. its only fair. a soul for a soul.

Now, the lovemaking scene is totally different. it’ll only arouse you sexually and that isn’t good (if you’re not married). its against our beliefs as Muslims.. its just wrong, logically and morally.
after all we’re humans, we should have more respect for ourselves than to be filmed and watched having sex on tv.

I am sorry but a simple kiss and a hug, is not making me hot.. Hard porn I can understand. It is ok, actually when you have seen it ones you have seen it all. When I was a kid, my mom always covered my eyes when they where kissing. So it is just like beeing home with mom, at the age of 7.

Thanks for the Open minded comment, yes for sure I am open minded, but I am also very pro the freedom of choice for each individual. Thats why I am an athiest, because I dont like to beeing told what to beleive. Every religion says we are the one thats right, it is like choosing from the cereal shelv at sultan center. But I do respect all for theire believs, as long as they dont stuff it down my throat, if you know what I mean.

Any way you can visit my blog, and we can continue there if you want, it is a very interesting subject. Better than a personal attach on my hair dresser…:-)
