In Focus: World Photo

Once upon a time there were two cool photography stores in Kuwait City. One day the building that hosted the two shops got demolished and the stores disappeared…

After a bit of looking around I then noticed one of the shops ended up moving to Muthana Complex but since I didn’t know what happened to the other store I assumed it just closed down. Then out of the blue, a friend of mine tells me he found the place in Shuwaikh. It seems when they demolished the building they decided to move out of Kuwait City and into the industrial area of Shuwaikh for some reason. I passed by and noticed they still had all the used film cameras and lenses on display for sale. They also still have Cokin filters and various tripods, camera bags and studio lights for sale. I was checking out the Nikons, they had the F3, F4 and F5 for sale but none of them were really in great condition. They had two medium format cameras (a Kiev and Mamiya) and also a bunch of compact cameras.

If you’re interested in passing by they’re easy to find. Go to Canada Dry street and if McDonalds is on your right keep going straight past the traffic light and straight under the bridge. Keep going straight you will see a huge place on your left called Ramez. You need to keep driving until you hit the round about and then do a u-turn and head towards the direction you came from. Before the Ramez building you take a right and then you turn left behind the building and drive straight. You should see World Photo in front of you.

I’ve been buying photography equipment from these 2 shops for quite a while. They have a good collection of equipment. World photo used to keep your used equipment if you wanted to sell, I dont know if they still do…

Hi..
there is another shop also in Salmeya which have different Video and Photography things.

its called ((Media System)) its almost back of sooq al ghaysareya near to marina mall πŸ™‚

i’ve heard of this place from many people but none of the ones who told me remember how to get there, thanks mark!

although i heard that a lot of the cameras are not in good working condition πŸ™ i have 2 really nice old film cams that i got from ebay so i if you guys don’t find one you like in a good working condition then ebay is a good choice!

Well I picked up a Nikon 85mm 1.8f AF lens for KD35. The AF doesn’t work and the Ai doesn’t work so its like a full manual lens but thats still a good deal and the pictures are amazing.

I just came back from their and i was actually disappointed
they didn’t have the cokin holders just filters
no infrared filters and no wide angel lenses but at least i can say that there were some lenses for my a330 so it wasn’t a complete bust

just for everyone’s info…

World Photo Co. also have a small branch in Al-Muthana Complex, it’s in the 1st floor, you will find it close to “Samsung” and “As Seen on TV” Showrooms. Use the escalator located at the back entrance, when you reach the 1st floor turn and head towards the back, you’ll find on the left side.

The other camera shop “Al-Ajeel” is in the ground floor, so you can actually visit two camera shops in this complex.
hope this helps.

regards.

Adel

Just an update on muthana complex…

There is only one camera shop in muthana now on the top floor. It is called media something. They had only one used digital camera. The other shop called ajeel closed last year.

Thanks Mark, this is nice piece of info to me since for the last 1 week I’ve been searching for this shop. But do you know they buy old film cameras and camcorders (now I’m in India that why this question is posted).

Thanks for the info Mark! Wondered what had happened to the old shop once the building was demolished.
BTW, which shop is more worthwhile visiting, Shuwaikh or the two in Al Muthana Centre in respect of stocks on hand?

hey guys

i jst wanted to knw the proper address of these places …
if would be really nice if u guys could share the info…plz fill me in wit more details !!!
thanx..

An update about world photo for 2012…

I went there yesterday looking for a Nikon film camera. They had an f4 and an f5. The f4 was looked horrible and was scratched all over, but the guy behind the counter said that everything worked ok on it. He was charging 100kd for it which I thought was way too high.
The f5 was in better condition but still beat up. He was charging 120kd for it.

The shop also had a f90 and f90x. Then f90x was really badly scratched on the back and was in poor condition, but the electronics were still working and he said it worked. He was charging 80kd for it. The f90 was in the same condition and he was charging 95kd for it.
