Iraqi Tank Graveyard – Kuwait 1994

Great old footage of the tank graveyard. I tried to get to the graveyard once and couldn’t pass the army check point before it. Does anyone know if its still there? [YouTube]

Yes, it’s still there but you have to get through the initial guards (Kuwaiti) to get there. However, they used to be really slack and let anyone through. Yet when you approach the destroyed vehicles there are signs which say “No photos allowed”, though we always still took some.

In 2006 they were removing all the vehicles (tanks, buses, ambulances, cars, etc) and it’s probably pretty close to empty by now.

I might have some pictures on my external hard drive — if so I’ll send them to you.

Mark, if you give it a try again, tell the guards you’re ‘coming from the US embassy’. They don’t ask to see an Embassy Pass because they know you’ll be asked to present it at the American gate. Yet you don’t have to go through an American gate to get to the graveyard. Worst that can happen is they turn you around.

Muhannad – still in Kuwait. Ask KOC employees and they may or may not tell you. A lot of the stuff was buried up near the northern oil fields. How often are people who work up that way either tested or treated for cancer?

Hi d girl two weeks ago I was in dr.alomairs office the MP he’s the head of inviorment commete in the parlament and we spoke about all the issues of contamenation in the sea ,land , and air . He assured me that all destroyed and contamenated tanks left Kuwait some time ago through a contractor however there might be a tank here or there , I also adviced him to check some site for contamination just in case
Regards

Im with Muhannad, the Army used delpleted Uranium shells to destroy tanks, so I wouldnt want to be anywhere near that stuff thats left over.

From what I saw, the vehicles buried up there (really just piled on top of one another) appeared to be damaged due to car accidents, fire, and, well, just rusted out due to years of sitting in the desert.

I sure hope there’s no cancerous cells floating around up there — ack! I feel perfectly healthy 🙂

i visited this place late in the 90’s during my stay in kuwait. my dad worked for the kuwait navy and he had the same information about the contamination and the depleted uranium munition. but it’s not a very high contamination. if it was really bad i guess they wouldn’t let people go there at all. at least i hope so!

Hey, Mark. I went there last year. My boyfriend and I got past checkpoint. It’s mostly some old junk. The tanks were destroyed I think by some Indian or Asian company according to the Kuwaiti army dude. It’s dangerous because something exploded around 6-7 years ago and killed a few of the workers. You can visit there if you want, but no photography is allowed. Some old rounds are there. You can see that the same type of shells can be found near the Boubyan bridge. I’ll send you photos of the ones next to Boubyan (sp?) as soon as I manage to get them off my camera.

Yes everything is gone out there! I wouldn’t be surprised if the whole area is contaminated since all those destroyed vehicles were lit up with uranium!

Uh, y’all are kinda scaring me. The idea of being diagnosed with some crazy illness because I took a few close up pics of destroyed vehicles is a bit disturbing. I’ve never heard of the uranium contamination before now!

Khaled. He was my boyfriend at the time. I married him a year later.
Yup, we are in Kuwait.

This reminds me! I might go there again (with my husband) and see if I can sneak a few photos.

I dont think it is still there. I know the kuwaiti company which bought the scrap material, cut it and shipped it to India and elsewhere, for remelting into iron. They cleared the stuff around 2 years back.

Does anyone anything about highway 80? “highway of death”. I was told a few years ago that it was all cleared by the American army, when they were initially going into Iraq in 2003. any truth behind that ? just from looking at a few pictures that would definitely be worth seeing.

I tried to visit the tank grave yard in september 2010 and I managed to pass the control post. I couldn’t find any tank at all….. Later that day I spoke with an American soldier from the base and he told me that everything was destroyed a year ago and that there is nothing left. However, just let me know if I’m wrong as I’m still interested to visit that place.
