Kathy Griffin + Kuwait

This video isn’t new but I just saw it for the first time today. The comedian Kathy Griffin came to Kuwait and thought it smelled like crap so she put it in her monologue. Do you find it offensive or funny? [YouTube]

Thanks Cajie

It may be, but in stand up comedy, you can’t feel offended IMO, Some of Kuwait City indeed smell like SHIT not crap.

I smiled when i heard it, because her “comedy” isn’t funny to me.

Uhh.. no one said she can’t say whatever it is she wants to say. Just not many agrees or thinks she’s funny. No need to turn this into something it isn’t.

God i hate that women with all the surgeries on her face she still looks ugly as hell and you know what they say who smelt it dealt it

Well, what’s new with what she said? We have been in this situation for quite some time now.

Try passig through the bida3 roundabout, salwa coastal road, or any of the many areas flooded with sewage…

Don’t even get me started on the sewers right outside of AUK. It might sound hurtful but its the truth man some areas here in Kuwait STINK.

well it is not like she said she dont like.. she only stated how it smells…like fart… and it is true. Take a walk on the seaside its like taking a walk at the sewage plant.

i also agree, if you don’t like it, GTFO.

You guys obviously have not been abroad to see the true dump that exists out there. I’m not only speaking of sewage but other shyte.

Sm liykin yer enleees. Stay here because I love Kuwait, fought for it in 90/91 and don’t let something like a methane/sewage problem deter me. Et tu?

I don’t get it. Unless, she’s talking about the sewage system which is currently being worked on and revamped in several areas, then I’d might agree, but the whole country? Seriously?

So what’s the big deal, New Orleans smell like puke and Venice on a hot summer day is like a sewer! I don’t think anyone will be offended, as Dasman does smell like a mega fart any time of the day.

Is that sewage smell that I smell in bidaa and some places in Kuwait City? I remember someone told me this was due to sulphar deposits or something like that in the ground and when the earth gets dug up the gases get released and we smell it.

That would be the smell of hydrogen sulfide. If you can smell it then either something’s wrong with the sewage or as is currently the case, the sewage system is under maintenance.

I visited Kuwait briefly, stayed in Kuwait city and that’s what I’ve been told too.
Someone else’s said it’s the de-watering companies that hit sewage pipes when they dig foundations.

Wow some people don’t know how to take a joke. If you can’t take jokes then GTFO.

I found it funny. It wasn’t meant as a malicious comment it was just one of those silly things to get people started.

What You liked this Joke???
I didn’t . Comedians who has no Materials to offer but Slapping others To The Extreme . Unless, moderate is ok.
Well , I think Taking a Joke Is Like that, is the same as being a Chicken or yellow .
People Can’t take a Crappy joke Should be honored For having Balls.

And , Btw, the only places with the awful are either Al-badaa , or the 6th . That’s about it.

What she said is the truth, she came when Mishref, Bayan, Romaitheya and Salwa had sewer problems with smelled like garbage combined with shit…

Some places in Kuwait do stink when there’s a sewage problem, but to say that the entire country smells probably means that she was confusing the atmosphere with the scent of her own fecal residue, which coagulates on underwear as a “skidmark” when people suffice with toilet paper.

It not offensive .. but Not funny .

I remember I watch a scene in The Wayne Brothers Show were he found his brother working as a waitress and when his brother was avoiding to let him see his face and to make an excuse to his friends he told them that he is from Kuwait and its imparesing for them to work as a waitress .. now that’s funny !

I wish some one could put it in youtube ..

I do agree that there were areas in Kuwait that really stunk, namely in Salmiya, but that was when I was there more than 3 years ago, I don’t know about now.

Her joke wasn’t funny at all, Russel on the other hand, now he did manage to pull it off, and he was hilarious at heck!

quote Desert Girl “Truth. That was the VERY first impression I had of Kuwait when I landed here in 1993. And it continuesโ€ฆ.’

Well the impression i got from your post is that you don’t like the way my country smells, well then what are you doing here? You can leave you know? Oh wait you make MONEY here ahh ok. What so when you make money all of a sudden my country’s fragrance doesn’t disturb the delicate entity that is your probably oversized nose.

@ Mark please don’t censor this she started it when she insulted my country.

I hate the pathetic “If you don’t like it get out” comments that are the first thing out some Kuwaitis mouths when anything negative is said about Kuwait, even though 90% of it is true. Bottom line, a lot of Kuwait does smell like a fat deuce, and people should be allowed to voice their opinion about the smell, or any of Kuwait’s many other shortcomings without being told to get out.

If every foreigner did that, your country would fall back into the stone ages. You know, how it used to be 70 years ago. lol

Desert Girl shared her opinion, she didnt insult anyone.
Chan zain ys7ebon el janasi mn el awadim eli y6al3on sha3b lekwait eb 9ora baykha.. like you.

Excellent reply. We need to be able to handle constructive criticism, which we can’t seem to do at all levels in this country. I love Kuwait, but if a truth emerges, work on it.

com’mon guys…we all know it’s true. it’s one of the few things that I don’t miss about Q8…that and the RUBBISH
With the money Q8 has there is no excuse for the enviromental disaster on its doorstep
Or does throwing money at people make them blind?

uh, no we don’t. TBH I only smell it in certain locations and due to recent sewer problems.
You must have been living in a crappy area to be smelling it all the time :/

The trash part I agree with you though.

Ya Othman…Messila beach near the beautiful masjid…that’s not a crappy area.
I love Kuwait and the only reason I criticise is in the hope that something can be done to improve it…PPP Positive People Power
If you see something wrong, try to correct it by whatever means at your disposal. As I don’t have any wasta for these things, I turn to great blogs like these that are read by many well educated Kuwaitis who could one day make a real difference inshAllah :-)))

Wasta is not for every situation either, particularly for something as big as this, even Kuwaiti’s can’t really do much to help the issue get resolved. These are the kind of issues that get discussed at the National Assembly, but seeing as how messed up the Assembly has become recently thanks to certain people, nothing gets done at all and it’s why a lot of Kuwaiti’s are getting frustrated with the current situation in Kuwait.

Lets hope that those “certain people” are watching Al Jazeera. A slap in the face may just wake some of them up.
As I said before PPP
M

Hmm.. Let’s see.. Bidi3 roundabout, Salwa, Mishref, KU Shuwaikh campus (phwwwwwwwwww), Free Trade Zone…

She’s right :/

she was much funnier with seinfeld, i just hate her now that she’s o her own – she even made fun of her own mother with larry king last year – she has a funny voice and excellent showmanship, but i guess she lacks the subtleness of great comedians

IF am going to pick certain places that smell bad .. then ya…

I can easyly pick places in new york that smell bad… goes with congested areas…

where I live i dont have a bad smell problem … nor do I have one at work…

IT DEPENDS on where you go and where you live i guess…

we can’t be spraying chanel no 5 on areas you ppl visit that are very much congested and would smell as such ! (bid3, free trade zone (industrial), salmiya… etc… and oh Mishrif … well there is a swege plant there no suprise … etc).

how bout Shamiya kaifan .. tha7ya … all good … marina mall area .. quiet nice … etc

Kathy Griffen is a washed up comedian .. she been trying to attract attention with no hope … as many pointed out HERE joke is not funny even if we ASSUME its true.

She did plastic surgery and many commedic stunts to attract attention … but like this guy called Andy whats his name… she just go washed up and is a dead beat comedian …

dont bother me…

let the U.S. fall into the dispair of the financial crisis… and let us enjoy our lives here in the middle east… hamdullah !

Kathy Griffin is a comedian … if you don’t like it, then don’t laugh. No need to drag your disdain for America into this post.

FYI, I’m an American married to a Kuwaiti and am happy to report that we have no foul smells in our area. On the other hand, it is hard to visit her family in Mishref because …. IT SMELLS LIKE A FART!! Sorry but the truth hurts.

I had friends visiting from abroad…and it was truly embarrassing. Whether you’re going to a cafe at Bidi3 or Sharq…or even down Salmiya, it smells. These same friends came a while back and didn’t smell anything. Its gotten ridiculous. All we can hope for is that they fix it. Kathy Griffin isn’t and has never been funny. It isn’t particularly offensive.

Oh my!! I find this very offensive…just like the others said, just another American talking, it’s nothing new, she needs to go back and see what kind of crap is going on in US.

Agree – sooooooo true, used to live near Bidaa roundabout and HAD to move because of the disgusting smell that is there constantly.
Don’t get me started about when the afternoon breeze is blowing from a certain direction at Waves neat Marina Mall. It is disgusting that the sewerage problem has not been fixed, but hey, KD1000 for all….

That’s right, and I’m gonna be laughing all the way to the bank despite the stench. U mad? And if it gets too stinky I’ll just hire someone to burn incense and spray rose water around me wherever I go. I can probably afford it with all this money I’m getting. U mad?

I agree it was offensive !!

But unfortunately it is true!!(think)

Stop swearing & blabbering about the comment she made … and do something about organizing a forum or group to make the authorities know about these issues.
I mean there is always a group or forum formed every now and then for different sorts of causes. Why not start one for the environmental benefit of Kuwait. OR if there is one .. can anyone inform them to do some kind of campaign against these issues.

Action is way better than words my fellow people !!

Authorities already know there is a problem and there is a lot going on right now to fix it. Have you seen the maintenance work being done is Salwa, Rumeithiya, Sabah Al-Salem, Bayan, Mishref and a host of neighboring areas? This does not only include the sewage system but also electricity, street lighting as well as phone/internet lines. They just recently upgraded the sewers, street lamps and switched to fiber optic cables in Sabah Al-Salem and I’m sure other areas are just about done too. Next step will be to revamp the roads, paint the curbs, etc. Trust me, there is A LOT being done.

Why should anyone feel offended. Its the truth, and to little has been done about it. The junction between the six and gulfroad, driving in front of salwa always smell…hmmmm, crap.

@ Joe
I agree with u we should do somthing about it …

btw: from the way u speak i think ur a teacher :p
( i have a sixth sence about these things XD )

lolz..i love this country but it doesnt change the fact that kuwait is stinky and u all know it. stop giving people the impression that it’s disneyland.

Let me say that I DO like Kuwait. There are places in Kuwait that has a certain smell. Some say it’s the sulphur leaking through the soil. But lets also be honest. I live in Salwa. It’s smells like s**t and has done so going on 3 years now! That’s not the only area smelling like crap. I mean they are doing maintenance work 3 years & going???? For a rich and proud country why wouldnt you want to acknowledge the problem & fix it. Whether you like it or not this is an impression foreigners get of Kuwait. As a country you should ask do you want to keep that impression or fix it????!????!! Foreigners like me will come and go but do you Kuwaitis want to stay with this?

As for Kathy…. I haver never thought her funny but she does throw truth in her “comedy”

Its funny! Ofcourse she is exaggerating that the whole country stinks but thats what their job is! All art form, be it making people laugh is always an exaggeration! So if she visited 2 places that stink in Kuwait, to make it sound funny she has to say a whole country! Kuwait City is the main city of Kuwait and most tourist when visiting can smell that sulphur thing (if thts true)

Hilarious. I would say the nasty areas smell more like rotten eggs mixed with fart, it’s a very vile and distinct rank ugh.

I saw this a few weeks ago and I thought it was a pretty lame and cheap sketch. But a few days ago I realized how right she was. The places where the rotten egg smell is present are alarmingly increasing, Maseela, Mishref, Al-Bidaa, Ahmed Al-Jaber street and thats just the place where I mostly happen to drive.

So the bottom line, yes Kuwait does smell like fart ๐Ÿ™‚

First of all, it’s kinda true. Maybe not the “ENTIRE COUNTRY”, but she’s a comedienne – of course there’s going to be hyperbole.
And it kinda made me giggle, even if I don’t usually find her stuff funny. Seriously people, who gives a shit? I find it hard to understand being offended by this.

Well…I know exactly what she is talking about.
Almost every major hotel approach road sits on a sewer line that dumps stuff into the sea.

For example, be it the Holiday Inn or the Hilton anywhere in Kuwait, the road drains are always stenching, it comes through your a/c right into your brain K/O.

So I guess this lady travelled mostly from hotels to airport and got this impression. Not very pleasent on the ears huh? *sniff*

It’s funny how some people instead of solving what it is really annoying to every one, locals or foreigners, just have this answer ready to shoot: if you don’t like it here, goto your own country !!

What she said is offensive, even if at time some areas in kuwait do have sewage problems, she does not have a vested interest in my country she doesn’t work here she doesn’t live here therefore what she said is offensive. People can criticize kuwaits shortcomings without sounding like an idiot and being insulting.

its not offensive at all. we make fun of every country and their people in the world, why do we get offended when someone talks about us or our country. 7alal 3alaina w 7aram 3alaihom? grow up people.

I agree, why say if you dont like it get out? I haven’t read any comment about not liking Kuwait only people’s first impressions when they arrive to Kuwait! My question is why is THAT your answer??? Why isn’t your question, we know it’s true so what should we do to change this? Seriously why can’t a truth be used and changed into something positive?

For the record: I love Kuwait but there are a lot of areas that stink like S**T!

What Smells like crap must be coming from her pits.
…………………………………………
She was a K-9 at NYPD hehehe ๐Ÿ™‚

it’s a bit offensive but it’s the truth ๐Ÿ™

The way some people react to people admitting the truth is so pathetic. The whole “if you don’t like it go back to your country” shit is SO OLD now. Grow the FUCK UP. Instead of agreeing that there is a problem and that it should be addressed and solved, some of you go that low route making it seem like you want to smell the crap alone. Jeez.

Just because someone has criticism for Kuwait, it doesn’t mean they hate it. Not accepting something negative about Kuwait is a GOOD thing because it means that person cares enough to want the country to be as perfect as possible.

Many other countries have some small areas where it smells bad, but im sure it’s not a permanent thing like here in Kuwait, being born and raised up here, I swear i get nostalgic when i smell sewage, reminds me of all kinds of places in Kuwait, truth be told!

So for a country that has financial resources, wouldn’t cleaning up be the most hygienic and civilized thing to do,.! how pathetic and sad is that?

Guys lets be Honest, she didnt say anything wrong they should take things seriously here and work on it you guys should be happy that some one is informing you something about Kuwait and dont take it personal.

On the Hand you wanna smell go to Kuwait City next to the Upcoming New Icon of Kuwait which is Al Hamra tower where it was featured in Discovery Channel and smell mother nature and then comment.

The smell Stinks even its called the stinky street of Kuwait for more than 6 years and there is no action done i dont know How VIPS and Business Men along with toursits gonna even visit that place.

im the least sensitive person when it comes to standup comedy but that was really Not funny , anyway she’s kinda right , i was walkin by the beach the other day and it was kinda smelly in some parts i just lied to my self and said it’s a natural smell from the sea , it’s really shameful a country as rich as kuwait have these sewer problems , and to “lulz” grow up and realise that nothing wrong with positive criticism, that 1000kd won’t solve any of our problems and most of us would probably spend it in less than 2 months

This was hilarious and should be MORE hilarious to anyone thats lived in Kuwait cus we know more about it than them and can relate.

but no of course not we are amazing, hard working, non lazy people who respect and treat all cultures with dignity and equality. ALso we have the utmost respect for the law, especially road laws.We are amazing, all 100 percent of us and our country smells like roses and lavender – its the best in the world and anyone that doesnt think so is either blind stupid or bengali and should GTFO.

laugh people. You would if it was about someone else, even if it was a guilty little giggle!

man ur pulling an abracadabra on us!! seriously let me specify the stinking places,

1. Salwa Road!
2. Sharq traffic light next to Wataniya Telecom
3. Sea side (almost all) especially next to scientific center
4. Kuwait City close to Sheraton roundabout

the list goes on… that’s not my idea of lavender or rose.

Another comment abracadabra, I do believe Kuwait in many cases have given very kind privileges to many expats, but the treatment or manner we are being offered is like looking down and humiliating. but you claim that you treat everyone with equal respect and acknowledge their dignity. well then, how do you label a Bengali as stupid?

listen man, no matter who you are or where you come from, your actions should determine your credit and not what others are doing for your credit! how much can you say that you as an individual are doing for equality, dignity and the other principles?

In another man’s words: no human beings’ dignity and integrity should be conceived any better than any one elses.

When God grants us awareness, hold on to it, and thank him for it, it can help map our achievement if we are sincere!

first step: accept criticism and take it like a sport ๐Ÿ˜‰ then do your part for the society which can be remembered by the next generations as an accomplishment.

Allah ybarik bi hl balad w bi ahlha ajma3een inshallah!

Well, I believe “the mentality” should change first. Untill then, enjoy the lavender n rose everywhere ๐Ÿ™‚

And we always wonder why Abudhabi, Dubai or even Doha have passed us long ago !

I read pretty much all the comments before posting this. Here is my opinion.
1- Those of you who think expats should get out of kuwait just because they find something disgusting and voice their opinions….well if we leave who is going to build your country? I take it that this group is immature and fall into the age group of 13-21 without which there is no excuse for such lame comments. Kuwaitis needs to realize that you pay expats big sums of money because kuwait lacks the skilled manpower it needs to develop its infrastructure. If we leave i think you would have bigger problems than sewage in the near future.:p I hope this is not offensive to this group because i think kuwait is a good place to live but people need to accept freedom of speech.

2- The group that feels kuwait is not bad ” compared to other countries” – why look at the countries that are worst…you have the advantage of a small population with loads of money shouldnt you try to be better than the developed countries? Lol. Complacency is all i have to say.

3- There was one person that says ” it is only in congested areas..most crowded areas have this issue”… The entire population of kuwait is one tenth the population of certain cities around the world…poor excuse for a sewage problem considering the gdp of kuwait.

sorry but i forgot to address another comment….”another american addressing their opinion at their own will” …if i was an american….i would have found that offensive…90percent of your technology and services for the oil sector comes from america…dont degrage all americans just because the woman who offended you is an american. Dont forget without america you wouldnt have the freedom you enjoy today.:)

This is an old video, 6 years old. I don’t think it’s offensive. The government should fix this smelly problem since money is not an issue, instead of throwing money to countries that supported the Iraqi invasion in 1990.

My office is located in the Dasman Complex and it always stinks there 24/7 more so during lowtide. The idea of opening a window for fresh air doesnt even come up considering ther isnt any. The no smoking policy in our office is strictly followed not out of fear from reprucssions from management but out of fear of causing a fire storm God forbid the methane in the air were to catch fire if some one lit up ๐Ÿ™‚

Making fun of (people, places, countries), is not considered freedom of speech. I call it harassment!
Though they are facts, and would make you laugh. I find it very offensive and I can say I was very upset when I saw the video.
She makes money by harassing people and countries, wow! THATโ€™S FUNNY!

She looks like ass.. She’s not funny.. As if America smells good everywhere.. Her voice is annoying.. I’ve seen an episode on her shitty show “My Life on the D-List” where she went to Kuwait so she could fly to Iraq and entertain soldiers.. Once she got out of the Sheraton Hotel, she said “This country stinks”, I’m thinking ‘Bitch, shut the fuck up and shove some collagen up your plastic ass’

I love Kuwait and what I love about it most is how so many people love to hate it . this means that its got so much that others want but cant have. regardless of whether is smells in some areas , Ive been around the world and have smelled shit all over . Kuwait rules , I want to die here . let the haters hate . I love it . Happy 50th Kuwait .
