Kuwait 1960

A few days back I posted two pictures that were taken by this guys parents back in the 1960’s when they were in Kuwait. Well the guy (Brett Jordan) has uploaded more pictures including the one I’ve posted above which is of the Sheraton roundabout. I can’t believe it was that beautiful. I can see Fahad Al Salem street in the background and it looks so green with all the trees! The whole street looks very spacious and clean, I wish it still looked like that today. Check out the rest of the pictures by visiting his flickr page [Here]

Wow that was a bit… what’s the word I’m looking for… ah yes racist. Not to mention misguided since the government doesn’t really care much when it concerns the proper planning and up-keeping of urban areas so you should be taking it up with them.

Mark, every time you find and post pics of Kuwait back in the day, all youre doing is reminding all of us of how trendy, open minded and advanced Kuwait was compared to its neighbors back then, and how backwards and ugly kuwait has become compared to its neighbors,or actually even compared to itself today. I dont know where or how it all went wrong but I do know that it will take a miracle to shake off the shackles of apathy that have taken over this unique country and bring it back on track….

I blame car pollution. Even when you look at pictures of other Arab countries from the 1960’s, you will notice how green and blue they looked like.

Syria and Lebanon are good examples. Just take a look at the buildings back then and compare them to now. The same buildings still stand but they look a bit BLACK in color because of the car emisions and other air polllutants.

To back that up, one has to look at the increase of cancer in our region. Pollution does not just make a city look “ugly” it can even change the attitudes of people as well.

The building on the left used to be the Ministry of Finance. The one on the right belongs to Thnayan Al-Ghanem. There used to be a Rolls Royce dealership on the ground floor right on the corner.

Wow, the first thing i can think of right now is how messed up this time is…i mean if you look at pictures of the 60’s in Kuwait or read about that time you would be really amazed how things have changed to the worse (sure these buildings in the pictures need some serious fixing now) but still…Kuwait was heaven back then.
I wish i was alive at that time…but i concider myself lucky i lived throughout the 90’s (the greatest decade ever ! woohoo
