AR thats not true. Country names can be owned by individuals. WIth patented brand names its not always black and white. Check nissan.com, it doesn’t belong to the nissan you think. I owned blindmelon.com and the band tried to take it away from me and lost the court case against me. I ended up keeping the domain.
Country domains are worth a lot of money. KD500? my domain is worth more than that yet alone kuwait.com

Unless you have a company called Kuwait, I really dont find it interesting. The interesting bit is .com.kw, which the ministry already have control over and they’re already setting sky high prices that companies dont even bother getting such extension.
I dont know how much Kuwait.com is priced, but whoever is trying to profit on it.. good luck. If it was up to me i’d say let it ‘rot’ in cyberspace. its not worth paying a lot of cash over a domain that makes no sense.
by the way.. i just did a quick search, US.com, UK.com, Japan.com, Sweden.com… they are all not used. which means no companies are interested with such a domain.

With this economy, and almost all the major domain name players losing their money, he would be lucky to get 2 to 3% of what he is offering. Country domain names “can” be used as long as you don’t declare you are the official website of the country, otherwise you are in trouble.
Your domain name, Mark, is worth no more than 500kd without it’s content, as a domain name only that is. Kuwait.com content is poor and has no value.
And no, Kuwait government should and would not be interested on buying it.

There is a lot of value in these domains, because the .com namespace is already taken up. All four letter and most 5 letter domains are taken.

Generic domains are worth even much more than 140K .. Russia.com was sold for 1.5 million dollars .. Korea.com was sold for 2.3 million dollars .. In fact NBK wanted to take it for a million dollar back in 2002

jaja I’ve already been offered kd10,000 just for the domain name (no content) but didn’t and wouldn’t sell. kuwait.com is worth a lot because its simply kuwait.com. Its like owning car.com or house.com or sex.com. You want to know about something usually you type in the domain and press enter or if you are looking for info on kuwait and do a search, a result with kuwait.com would be one you would more likely click on just because of the domain. its also very easy to remember and there is the prestige of the domain.Now I’m not sure how much its really worth since I am not a money guy nor an entrepreneur but if a store like bvlgari in salhiya got sold for a million kd khiloo then kuwait.com is probably worth 100,000. It’s prime online real estate and if kuwait isn’t ready for it now thats ok, they will be in a few years time.
By the time you make decent returns with that domain Kuwait would have run out of oil.Then it’s totally useless.

I’m not sure about this info but I heard about a decade ago, the kuwait gov’t offered this guy over twice what is he is asking for today. He turned them down thinking he could get more. He didn’t get any offers after that equating to what he could’ve gotten from the gov’t… And was stuck with it for years.
This info is a fact: Recently, he tried to create a social networking channel with it aimed at the populus of kuwait. Hoping it would bring in people. I guess it didn’t take as much as he’d hoped. My suggestion to him is, if you’ve got lemons, than make lemonade :)hehe

Mark, whoever offered you 10,000 KD belongs to the same group of guys who extremely raised the prices of domain names and are in deep trouble today, google Frank Schilling, Rick Schwartz, Sahar Sarid, and the list goes on. If you have been offered 10,000 KD it does not mean your domain name is worth 10,000 KD. Same concept applies to lands. As I said earlier, your domain name itself without the content is worth no more than 500kd.
Kuwait.com itself is a good name, I’m not saying it’s not. But comparing it to car.com, house.com and specially sex.com? Not even close. I remember Kuwait.com being offered in sedo.com and they showed how much traffic it was getting per day; your website Mark gets more traffic than Kuwait.com. Keep in mind you get most of your traffic through search engines (I’m almost certain, correct me if i’m wrong), while Kuwait.com’s major traffic is type-in. That idea itself makes Kuwait.com more valuable than yours, but no where close to 100k.
And please, whoever was talking about Russia.com and Korea.com. Can you even compare?

using the bahrain example again; if you search for bahrain on google you find the bahrain.com as the forth link while the actual government portal (bahrain.bh) doesn’t even show up the first five pages.

Abdullah: he could register 244am.com but he wouldn’t have my traffic nor my established name. if this blog overnight became 2:48AM electronics shop the shop would gain from the 248am traffic. of course thats not a long term thing but would be enough to get the electronics shop the publicity it needs. if for example you bought the name burger boutique from the owner and then you opened up a shop in avenues, people would come to the shop based on the fact they recognize the name compared to the fact if you opened a shop and called it burger palace or some unknown name.

What bothers me is how false evaluation of domain names affected and still affects the domain name industry. I have been involved in there for a few years and I have seen how greed made the major players raise the prices for their own benefit, but that never lasted for too long. They have always claimed they wanted to evolve the industry yet they were degrading it. They created a loop, made so many people join them, and now they are stuck there. I’m not saying all the major players did that, a few didn’t join what I would call their “gang” and stayed away, people like Thunayan and Yun Ye.
Well the way I look at it a domain is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. It’s like most limited edition items in life.

Interesting debate guys. I’m on the side that Kuwait.com is a valuable domain. It will be the first thing people check when they look up Kuwait. Thats for sure. It has so much potential. Too bad its current owner has no clue what to do with it. I’m sure he bought it thinking the Government would come in one day and pay him a boat load of cash. He should have known that our Government is as clueless as he is hehehe. Too bad Kuwait has zero touristic appeal, otherwise this website would be worth the money he’s asking for if not more. With the way things are right now… I start the bidding at KD1
i think the owner is clue full , but such things requires money, it needs such an investment , i dont think the owner can simply deploy any business over a domain like kuwait.com , he needs to be a developer , its easy to create a blog but kuwait.com dose not need to be a blog !
however ,the smart thing to do is building a porno website on kuwait.com and blackmail the Government for at least 1M . only then your bidding of 1KD wont win for sure 🙂
