Kuwait in last ditch plea for Olympics

A group of Kuwaiti MPs is heading to Switzerland in a bid to persuade the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to allow the Gulf state to compete in the London 2012 Olympics.

Kuwait, banned from Olympic events and funding since 2010 amid allegations of political interference, has proposed a raft of measures aimed at reinstating its athletes’ in the international sporting event, state news agency KUNA reported. [Source]

Ouch! I didn’t know we were banned from the olympics. That must suck for the Kuwaiti shooters who qualified.

This is just sad. I thought the ban was for the football only?.

Kuwait does very well in the Olympics, and it will really awful for the athletes who train so hard for this one shot.

The only other country that was banned was Ghana, but they have rendered the matter with the Olympic committee, so after that said, Kuwait is the only country in the world banned from the Olympics. Congratulations. And you waited until the last minute to render this issue, so who knows if they will accomplish anything.

it’s a shame for the all those who have trained. It can all be blamed on the people who violated the rules were given a chance to correct themselves but refused because they believe they are untouchable and above the rules.

I hope the ban remains and all those effected bring the ones who caused all this accountable.

But of course that will never happen.

it will be good if Kuwaiti athletes don’t go for 2012 olympics because there is something bad going to happen this year.during olympics.

guys.. just because he has an arabic name does not make him a tortoise/turtle.

He was most likely referring to the 2012 the-world-is-going-to-end nonsense.

hahahah yeah Ms. Neutral, wasta is ingrained in the mentality here, people honestly (and stupidly) don’t understand why it could possibly be a generally bad thing. The ignorance is staggering.

Kuwaiti athletes are banned to play under the kuwaiti national flag. However for those who qualified, they will be playing under the olympic flag, which means no medal will be gained for kuwait. It is been like that for couple of years now. And i think this is the situation in london 2012. I don’t think we are banned to play. I hope someone make sure of that

Probably a very serious allegation. I don’t think Kuwait is taking part this year. Oh well there’s always next time.

??? I was referring to Kuwaitis who try to use wasta abroad, especially with a big international organization like the IOC.

are you saying they might just end up LOST?
on the LOST island?
I think that would be the chance if anyone took Kuwait Airways.

Politicians have more pressing issues than Olympics! Such as getting a list of all churches in Kuwait ASAP!

There goes the Kuwaiti athlete’s dreams.. down the drain! Why can’t these politicians stay where they are and leave sports alone, they never mix, never work, never will happen. Oh well, let’s wait another 4 years.

habiby this all sports is a game like for kids, so what if they can’t go to the olympics? they can get a real job in the ministry and sleep all day. We have more important things in kuwait to deal with like banning mixing in schools and catching cars with tint bc they might be kissing a girl inside OMG.

Did you say a group of MPs are headed there? QUICK!! Send a fleet of ‘behavioral therapists’ to make sure they conduct themselves in an ‘acceptable’ manner!!

Kuwait athletes can participate under the Olympic Association Flag and not under Kuwait Flag is the challenge they would face. Athletes as such personally will not loose anything, but they cannot claim that they appeared on behalf of Kuwait

I’ll let you know if I see any Kuwaiti competitors when I am in the Olympic Stadium watching the games
