Kuwaiti athletes will compete under the Kuwaiti flag at the Olympics

I mentioned the other day that I had heard Kuwait was sending a delegation to Switzerland in hopes of getting things sorted before the Olympics start at the end of the month. Looks like they were successful because the International Olympic Committee just approved Kuwait’s request to hoist the National Flag and the playing of the Kuwaiti National Anthem at the London Olympics.

Minister of Communications and Acting Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Salem Al-Utheina on Saturday congratulated all Kuwaitis on the approval of the International Olympic Committee of Kuwait’s request to hoist the National Flag at the upcoming Olympic games in London and playing of the Kuwaiti National Anthem.

The Minister told KUNA that he was informed of the approval following his second meeting earlier today with the Committee’s President Jacques Rogge.

Al-Utheina had delivered a letter from His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to Rogge at the Committee’s headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland on hoisting the flag of Kuwait in the Olympic Games, which kick off in London on July 27. [Source]

Congrats and good luck to all the athletes, Team Kuwait is a go!

That’s great! Is it just for the commencement or even if they’re awarded a medal? Basically, is our ban lifted?

Kuwait to hoist national flag at London Olympics – IOC lifts ban after Amir sends request to Rogge

Kuwait will be allowed to raise its national flag and play its anthem during the Olympic Games in London, the International Olympic Committee said on Saturday
after resolving a dispute with the Gulf state over its
participation.

No, the ban is not lifted.. The dispute is not at all resolved, not until the law is ammended/removed/changed. (Anyone know exactly what the rule/law is? and what our position is?)

Ok, so I just read an article on Alwatan newspaper’s website. It mentions that should Kuwait win the Kuwaiti flag will be raised and the national anthem will be played. That’s great news! (Don’t know if that also means all medals awarded will be awarded to Team Kuwait.)

However, the article also mentions that the ban is not yet lifted, and that the IOC “is looking forward to Kuwait changing the laws in question”

Knowing how Kuwait is being run now in terms of sport, they’re just happy this is happening and we might see this same problem the next olympics or maybe winter olympics should we have any atheletes that compete. We should not take this opportunity easily, the exact law has to come into the limelight and just have it ammended so it complies with the IOC!

Hmm, wait Reuters has something different..

“The IOC had said Kuwait needed to take steps to ensure the independence of its sports movement before the suspension could be lifted.”

“But after meetings between Kuwaiti officials and the IOC, the suspension has been lifted, the Olympics body said.

“I can confirm Kuwait’s National Olympic Committee (NOC) will be fully represented in London with flags and anthems,” IOC Director of Communication Mark Adams said in an e-mailed statement.””
