Kuwaiti Metalhead

So I’ve previously post about Kuwaiti rappers and a country musician and so here is a Kuwaiti metalhead called Yousef. He has 4 sounds online, below is the metal one but you can hear his other songs [Here]

Sweet riff on Lost there. Thinking is pretty cool as well.

Guile’s theme FTW! He should re-recorded with all the mistakes edited out. But great effort overall.

Thanks Mark for posting my music.

@ Commenters

I need some constructive criticism, not just “he sucks-horrible-noisy.” It would be better if you guys could be more detailed so I can take those criticisms and make my music better. I record by myself at home so the quality may not be amazing compared to professionally done stuff, but I think it gets the job done.

Thanks!

I found this horrible, what that meant, or what i meant to mean was that i didn’t like it. I didn’t say it sucks.

I didn’t like the intro riff that much, was very “generic”. But thats okay if your focus was playing a solo over it, but the solo was short and in my opinion had the wrong mix of effects. It might be the recording dropping the quality but that’s my 2 cents.

TBH, we can’t give you feedback without knowing what you are trying to do.

What kind of musical direction are you following?

@ Dude of the webz

Thanks for explaining yourself. I know when most people say horrible, sucks, bad, they just mean that it’s not what they like like how you described.

As for the effects, there are none. I refrain from using tons of effects like in most music today, as I dislike it and feel that the music industry today has distorted the meaning of “good music” because now-a-days a song isn’t “good” unless it’s perfect or has 1000s of effects on it.
The only effect was on the solo at the end where I added a touch of reverb on the big vibrato.

My musical direction is metal and acoustic stuff with progressive elements, so I like to incorporate odd time signatures found in Lost and Thinking. Whatever I play and like and find original, I record it.

Boring drumming. Boring solo.

Appreciate the effort, Yousef, but what have been demonstrated sucks with passion (Atleast to me).

I hope your other songs are better than this. And I hope you go head to head with Joe Satriani in skills.

By effects, i really meant the whole package, not chorus or reverb and the standard effects as some might call it. (Maybe settings was a better word?)

something was wrong, whether it was EQ or the Distortion/Overdrive. But you know, these mistakes only mean you are better of in the future. Don’t get down, i play in a band (or try to anyway) and the only way to get better is to learn from your mistakes.

Math Metal? I don’t know if you heard about it but it incorporates odd time signatures and progressive elements so you could check it out.

@ Dude on the webz

Alright. It’s an amateur recording and I’m still learning. I’m okay with it not being 100% perfect, nor do I want to achieve that, nor should anyone expect a amateur recording to be perfect.
It’s hard not to get down when the majority of comments are just saying the song “sucks, is horrible, boring” with no justification. But, I’m okay with it. Based on the comments for the other amateur local music being posted on this site, I was expecting the comments to be judgmental, especially since I play metal which is even less liked than rap or country music. It doesn’t phase me. I’m going to keep doing what I love to do and I’ll take the constructive criticism and use those to improve my music :D.

In terms of recording quality i don’t think it’s that bad. And i don’t expect it to be.

I dunno, guess my taste in metal is different than yours XD

I don’t understand all the negative comments. This guy is recording music from his own room onto a computer, its not easy to do alone and takes a lot of effort. I’m not saying you should like it because of the effort, but you need to understand how much work is put into something like this. So saying shit like “OMG this is nasty” or “this sucks” is a pretty shitty thing to do and you need to learn to be constructive.

Also, do you guys even listen to any kind of metal? You’re obviously going to dislike it if you’re not.

Kim, I think you’re the worst commenter here. At least Dude on the Webz (couldnt you come up with a shorter name? lol) is helping out.

i didnt like it for some simple reasons:

the intro riff isnt really suited for an instrumental… i dont know why but i was expecting some vocals….

its also very repetitive and well, the transition from the intro riff to the mini heavy part was out of place… the transition in the middle of the song was alright… not so bad

the solo is ok, but its a bit chippy, like to many start and stops, and the notes seem spread out, the background music doesnt suit it… kinda overpowers the solo

ok,honestly ive recorded some tracks long ago without any experience at home and it wasnt that hard, second,i cant figure out,is your song girl on facebook a joke? i keep repeating it and cant stop laughing, your other songs are not even metal,my advice to you is to practice more,on everything specially timing, and then work on recording, and compose better tunes..these songs werent good ive heard the same stuff over and over everywhere.

just giving you tips and motivation

ps:vots is GAY x)

@ Taymor

Yeah girl on facebook is a joke. You’re the first person who realized it lol. It’s supposed to be funny but sung in a serious way to make people think it’s serious.

Could you post a link to your recordings? I’d love to learn. Also post some links to songs where you’ve heard the same stuff over and over similar to my music.
You mention timing? Could you point out specific points in my recordings where I’m off time? Pretty sure I quantized everything so nothing was off, including my recordings, but, please post some timestamps.

Taymour:

What instrument and software did you use? Link?

Also, I think you’re getting confused with what you consider off time and a specific way of playing, he’s not using a proper time signature.

i mainly use a jackson,i have a couple of other guitars(one is for sale if anyones intrested;ESP)
i use a peavy viper amp and for recording i use protools,i have no experience in recording but im teaching myself.

Also,in his song lost he hits some wrong notes and he hits them fast and then changes to the right note,i actually ment hitting right notes plus timing.

@ Taymour

Ah okay. I think my notes and timing were fine in Lost so I left it the way it was instead of re-recording the solo. The solo was original, at least compared to the music I listen to.
And dude Pro Tools? Ullah!!! You should check out Reaper. It’s a full DAW and it’s much simpler and it’s only $40. I love it.
I have a Ibanez RG570 from 1997, with original wizard neck and original edge bridge. It has a custom paint job.

@ Patrick

Thanks for the support man. I appreciate it. πŸ™‚

Hey Kiddo nice effort.

Here goes:

-Lost sounds alot like megadeth, not bad, but its still megadeth. Its obviously written to have someone accompany with singing but because that isn’t there the song ends up sounding boring and flat and very repetitive (repetition is a common problem with your work at the moment but thats normal)

The Solo seems out of place and just sounds wrong. Sit in a dark room for a few hours musing and see what hits you, something just sounds off.

As a work in progress its not a bad start, obviously needs a bit more work.

-Thinking sounds like something you did just for fun, which is good. It could go somewhere eventually but right now it just seems like something you belt out when you are bored or when someone says “dude, play something for us.” Keep it that way until you get more experience producing.

-Nice work on Guiles theme, you already know what to fix thus criticism is moot.

-Girl on facebook… LYRICS! Refine the lyrics, they are not very good at the moment. They don’t flow and there is nothing memorable about them. Its not a bad effort since unlike the other songs you have a clear idea of what you want the lyrics to sound like. However the song lyrics need a lot more work. The tune/rhythm needs some tweaking because right now it gets annoying very quickly.

Try writing a different song for the lyrics and different lyrics for the song (I hope that makes some form of sense.)

All in all not a bad effort for a Demo, but still nothing I would sign. Keep working at it when you have the time and chill with some of the other bands that you think have a similar sound to what you want. You can find them on myspace.

Ask Sarj to track down Flamingo for you, he is back in Kuwait and I think he will still jam with you and give you some tips if you need help.

Till next time.

@ Kitsune

-Don’t like or listen to Megadeth.
-Repetition is not a problem. Most metal songs play the same riffs 8+ times in a song and none of my songs have any riffs playing more than 3 times. You just perceive it as repetitive because there’s no singing going on. Most instrumental songs play the same riff for 2+ mins at a time.
-That was the exact thing I wanted to achieve in the Lost solo. get it, the song is called Lost and the solo is supposed to sound out of place.
-Agree with you on Thinking, I could definitely refine it and make it a little better.
-The lyrics on Girl On Facbeook are what they are.
-No, that doesn’t make any sense.
-This isn’t a demo. It’s just my music that I’ve recorded personally and would like people to hear. I don’t plan on getting signed based on this music so I’m okay with songs that don’t conform to what the media says is a good song. This is my art and it needs some refinement but my intentions are not to get rich and famous. I do write and record what comes out of my brain and what I like to hear and I’m glad other people like it too and would like more people to listen to my music. It is definitely different but it isn’t as bad as people make it out to be. Too many people are mistaking different with horrible. There’s room for improvement, but there will be no room for conformity to mass music media.

Thanks for the critique.

great work Yousef.

You will always have people who like and dislike you. Never stop doing what you love and eventually you’ll have all your fans gathered in one ‘big place’!
