Mariam Erzouqi grips her German-made air rifle with carefully-manicured hands, steadies her footing, eyes the target and slowly pulls the trigger until a soft crack echoes through Kuwait’s cavernous shooting range.
The 24-year-old, who is set to become the second Kuwaiti woman to compete at an Olympic Games, has an affinity for her rifle and will take dead aim at a medal in the 10 and 50 metres air rifle in London.

I thought that you reported the other day that Kuwait was not allowed to participate in the Olympics. Did they manage to negotiate a resolution?
What I understood is they get to participate under the Olympics flag not kuwait
Read the article. It’s all in there.
OK then I am cheering for the Olympic team , would there be others than Kuwaitis in this Olympic team?
I believe Kuwait is the only country that is banned from the Olympics. Kuwaiti athletes that have qualified will compete under “Independent Olympic Athelete”.
“Furthermore, the EB discussed different matters related to National Olympic Committees (NOCs). It was decided to allow duly qualified Kuwaiti athletes to participate under the Olympic flag with the title “Independent Olympic Athlete” in the London 2012 Olympic Games. The NOC of Kuwait has been suspended since January 2010.”
EB = IOC Executive Board.
Congratulations to Mariam on making the olympics as this is a huge accomplishment.
With that said it is so sad and disgraceful that Kuwait is the only country in the world that will not be allowed to fly their flag during the opening ceremoney. The last country that was prevented from competing in the olympics was Ghana. Is this really what Kuwait has come to ?
If any of Kuwaitis athletes actually does win a medal the flag will not be raised and if Kuwait miraculously wins a gold medal the national anthem will not be allowed to play. I wonder what song they would have to play if that does happen ? Would be funny if they played the spoof Kazakistan national anthem from Borat just to get Kuwait back lol
I’m a student from the United States and this is the first time I have heard anything about Kuwait being unable to participate under their flag at the Olympics! It doesn’t seem fair and I feel for this young women who doesn’t get to actually represent Kuwait while there.
