Now Showing: Oldboy

I am going to divide this post into two, in the first half I will talk about Cinemagic’s weekly movie screenings and in the second about Oldboy.

Last time I posted about Cinemagic was a year ago and a lot of you might not know about them. They are a local organization that focuses on helping and establishing local film makers in the region. They have courses, trainings, connections, everything that’s film related. One of the things they also try and do is increase the public’s interest in the beauty and art of the moving image and one of the ways they go about doing this is holding movie screenings every week. They hold these screenings in the old Salmiya, on the roof on top of Alghanim Electronics and LG. Anyone can go and watch a screening for free and they even provide snacks and refreshments.

Now the best part about all of this is the type of movies they play. They don’t play any of the mainstream stuff which Cinescape plays, instead they share a lot of small indie and foreign movies. This week they will be screening one of my favorite foreign movies called Oldboy which I reviewed here back in 2005. It’s a Korean movie about a guy who got locked up in a studio apartment for 15 years by some unknown assailants. Then one day, he gets released and decides to seek revenge and find out who locked him up and why. Its a violent movie which never gets boring and has a really messed up ending.

So if you’re interested, they’re screening this movie on Thursday March 19 at 7PM. I find out about their movies via a weekly newsletter and I have no idea how you could sign up to it but they do have a website which I believe is updated weekly and you can visit it by clicking [Here]

Update: Here is a link to their facebook group. [Link]

I’m on their Facebook group but for some weird reason I’ve never been able to attend… Either I’m busy or when I’m free they show something I’ve already seen or the weather is bad.

I assume they show movies in their entirety? Away from censors?!

i’m a big fan of this 248am, and it’s my first time leaving a comment thought i’v read this everyday. I’m korean.. and
I’d like to recommend “OLD BOY” to you.
It’s not just because it’s a movie of my mother contury, it’s a really new style movie maybe you never seen it before….
try guys..

Oh crap, turns out Oldboy is the source of a blatant rip-off by an Indian movie called Zinda (alive) which I thought was refreshingly different and interesting. Should’ve known better.

Well both the Indian and the Korean version have different endings !! So another reason to head down and have a look !!!

Well, can’t say its an exact copy, you do have a difference of a day here and there. 😀

I’m guessing the ending was made different only because the original’s ending was a little too shocking/taboo for consumption by mainstream Indian cinema-watchers.

@ sabah – Totally agree with you on the fact that the mainstream Indian cinema goer could not have digested the ending of Oldboy!!

Ciao Guys,

I am glad you guys are discussing our screenings, and will be more glad to see you attending the screenings by joining our facebook group or adding you to our e-mailing list.

It’s pretty simple, you can e-mail us on [email protected] so we add you to our list, or joing “Cinemagic Kuwait” group on facebook.

And here’s how we deal with that:
At the beginning of the month, we send you the monthly schedule of all the films, timings etc…

Then on a weekly basis, we send you a detailed invitation of the film. so you get to know exactly what’s it about.
Basically it’s every Thursday and Saturday 7PM. Thursdays are divided into: documentaries, animations, asian cinema, Foreign Classics. Saturdays are for award winning indie/foreign films.

As for Old Boy, they’re definetely re-making this in Hollywood. “The departed” was a good american remake. I’m Afraid this one will turn out to be a bad one if with Spielberg or Will smith. To make it Commercial enough, it’ll loose its essence. let’s wait and see.

Hope to see you all,

ciao

@ Micheal: the screening can be seen by neighboring buildings, did anyone ever complain? is there a threat that someday one of the neighbors would fall upon a supposed-to-be-censored scene and call the cops?

To make things clear, we’re not bothering anyone. And what we are showing are cultural films that has no explicit scenes. When we select the films, we make sure not to hurt any beliefs or traditions whatsoever. And the cinema nowadays has hundreds of good cult films. And i guess we’re dealing here with adults and not kids.

What I meant was not the people attending, been attending back in Yazan’s days. I meant the neighboring buildings… Did anyone ever bother when peeking from their windows? Couldn’t help but notice that some buildings are quite close and some of them could not understand what is a good cult film.

i got your concern, and as i said no one is disturbed. The closest building is being demolished, those on the same level are far etc… and in the end we’re not monitoring people’s windows. And anyway, you only hide what you’re ashamed of or afraid to show. We’re not and that’s why we’re in open air. And if you had your window there, then you’re lucky 🙂

This post looks very familiar, this isnt the first time you seemed to have copied posts from other bloggers!

Checked out this movie on Thursday. It was good.Didn’t fill out that feedback form but very good review from me re the set-up,sound,picture quality etc.

lol, I’d attended the movie , It was damn awsome .
Too bad It was cold up there, I feel sick now 🙁

I was thinking the exact same thing, I have read this post somewhere else. Please mark, for the love of akademia and democracy, please credit people’s work so we know where all of this news are coming from, the same goes with images please. Putting them there without any note to where they came from is very misguiding at least to concerned readers like me.

HOWEVER, thank you for providing links related to your posts.

bdayer I always credit people. In this case there is no one to credit except for Cinemagic since they sent me the newsletter. If anyone else posted about this exact same showing thats probably because they also got the newsletter.

If you think I copied someone by talking about Cinemagic thats also not true since I am the first one to ever talk about them, posted about them on the day of their launch back in 2007.

If you think I copied someone by talking about Oldboy again I posted about it back in 2005 here

Putting that aside like newspapers post about the same thing its not uncommon for bloggers to post about the same thing also. Kuwait is small and very little happens there so when an event occurs like a movie showing, a new restaurant opening or an event, you are bound to get more than one blog posting about it. If you don’t like it you could always choose to read just one blog and keep life stress free for you without having to worry about reading the same thing twice.

Yes it was a bit chilly up there.I was only wearing a t-shirt and freezing my @#s off.The snow scene near the end only made it worse.
