A few weeks ago a new shawerma place opened up called Mr Subs. I got emails from readers of the blog telling me about it and some friends also recommended it to me. What made this shawerma place special is that it was owned by Samir Saeed, the owner of Mr Baker.
The place is located in Jabriya, over looking the 4th Ring Road near where Mr Baker is. I passed by last week for dinner and it wasn’t that hard to find, you take the first right after Hardees, then another right so that you are driving in the direction of the 4th Ring Road and at the end of the street take a left to find Mr Subs on your left hand side.
Mr Subs serve a variety of stuff other than shawerma but I wasn’t interested in them. I ordered two chicken shawermas and was told I had a choice of 3 different bread to choose from. I chose the regular Arabic bread, the other two choices were a burger bun like bread and a bread that had olives in it or something. First thing that struck me about the place is how clean it was. It’s probably the cleanest shawerma place I have ever seen, the area around the shawerma grills were spotless which really impressed me. Sadly that was the most impressive thing about the place.
After picking up my two shawermas I went back to the car and started munching on them. I wasn’t very impressed. The shawermas reminded me a lot of the Kurdo shawermas which I am not a fan of. Its what I call commercial shawerma and its mostly because of the sauce they use. Notice I said sauce not garlic because thats basically what both Mr Subs and Kurdo use. Its a consumer friendly replacement to regular garlic most shawerma places use. The sauce which probably does use a bit of garlic doesn’t taste like garlic, instead it tastes more like mayonnaise which I can’t stand. Its also very liquidi which makes the shawerma feel greasy.
Another problem I had with the shawermas were the price, starting from 600 fils per shawerma its not cheap. The cheapest shawerma they have is the one that comes in Arabic bread, the other two choices of bread add 100 or 200 fils more to the price. At 600 fils a shawerma is also puts it really close in the price range of the Villa Fayrouz Express shawerma which tastes a lot better and is of much better quality. Oh and while I was waiting for my shawermas at Mr Subs I saw them pre grilling their burgers. They were grilling their burgers and then placing them in a container so that if someone ordered a burger they could just place it on the grill and heat it up. Although the place is really clean I didn’t like the idea they were pre-grilling their burgers. Anyway for the final score I decided to give their shawermas a 3 out of 5.

As soon as I saw it was Shawarma I started laughing! hahahaha… Straight from Lebanon, you get Shawarma, and that is what I was thinking about just now!
wow! that didn’t sound cool at all, so the food doesn’t come out fresh, what if they preheat shawermas too?
But Mark, maybe they were preparing for a an order that was already made by phone or something. However, I can not find a reason why would they place the burgers in a container for an order, unless they want to keep it as fresh as possible for the order after cooking it.
Mark, I’m worried about your health, you’re wolfing down way too many a greasy shawerma..
samir saeed rules
try routha co-op shawerma’s pretty decent garlic sauce they have
I second geo, yeah try rawtha co-op, i have been having it for years for the best chicken shawarma – garlic kick. They press it down on the grill so the bun becomes crispy on the outside. I haven’t been there for some time, but it should be the same.
I tried it last night after I read your review thinking that I would have a better experience, they dont even deserve a 2/5, the worst shawerma i ever had, the only good thing was the guy who took my order, he treated me like a king
mark you dont know shit the place is amazing mark your so harsh hahahahaha SHAWERMAAAAA
sar7an: They were half grilling the burgers not full. Its like how some places sometimes half fry the fries. Thats why I am sure they werent meant for an order plus they were doing a large quantity not like 2 or 3 burgers.
I am going to try the rawtha coop when I get back. is rawtha the same as rawda? Cuz i know where the rawda coop is i dont know where rawtha or routha is.
zahed: you are just pissed cuz i didnt take you there with me!
Mark: Rawda = Rawtha, the place is tucked in the alley way
mark: FYI sameer saied is no longer the owner of Mr. Baker or Kanafani ” Al Ghandoor Company” he sold it to some rich people who raped him off with cheap offer ” 1 million Kuwaiti Dinar. He entered a hospital to recover from the tragic events, i don’t have the details but that what really happened.
mark don’t you think it’s time to do “TOP 10 ShawarmaChart” it’s like summarizing all of your Shawarmaholic friends and of course your self .. i love shawarmah 😉
Armani Exchanger,
That’s a rumor,, sameer saeed is still the owner of all the places mentioned above, he’s a relative of mine and I can’t tell u how many times we have sat down and laughed at the same rumor over and over again ! Lool! Ppl dnt believe everything u hear ;p
mr.subs is the best restaurant in kuwait. it is very clean and doesnt preheat. i called sameer saeid and i told him about preheating and he told me what it is. they dont preheat their shawarmas. it is expensive because it is a place of rent and is pure meat and clean and u can trust that it wont be filled with oil that is bad for your body. their chicken and meat are hallal and supervised by them. try their burgers and salads and breakfast and you will be shocked of the deliocous taste. at first i thought it was expensive, but then i thought that expensive and good for health or cheap and bad for health; so then i said to buy as much as i want because it is food we trust and doesnt ruin our body and veins and diseases of the heart
if you know sameer saied let him know to register mr. baker on no5itha
mr.subs rules 😀 it is the best shawarma place in kuwait. you should all try it. i give it a 5/5 for their shawarmas as well as other stuff they have. its the best
