Sultan Center Salwa shut down

I’ve seen shops and restaurants closed down by the Ministry before but never a whole supermarket.

Thanks Quintin

hell yes over kit kat, what if this expired kit kat gives you food poisoning. Good job kuwait on closing down an unethical business 😀 impressed they couldnt use wasta to keep it up

It is the American Kitkat.. Much more expensive than the usually exported ones by Kuwait.. This Kitkat is not selling fast!

Really! import it from US? When everyone raves about the KitKat in the middle east? KitKat here is like cardboard covered chocolate. 🙁

they have this section of specials confections such as japanese green tea kit kat and for the rate they’re selling them, I wouldnt be surprised if they had old stock. Those candy bars are nearly 1.5 KD and even many locals wouldn’t find much sense in eating overpriced confections.

Yeah exactly, they’ve received multiple warnings for it before and they keep doing it so they got fed up I guess. Good for them, only way they’ll learn.

What’s worse is they place their crappy stickers over the original expiry dates, and I recall some incidents where they placed some stickers with dates that are way beyond that of the original expiry date.

I wasn’t surprised by the news either. I’ve always noticed the meat at Sultan ask kout looks and smells expired so I stopped buying meat from them.

Probably the straw that broke the camel’s back, TSC sells expired stuff all the time and goes as far as changing the stickers sometimes.

One more thing, I think this is a warning shot from the government to opposition leader Khalid Sultan MP. “You mess with us, we mess with you.” Careful or Sultan-Salmiya is next.

No not remodeling, they’re opening somewhere else cause the owner of te land won’t rent it anymore to tsc

I heard this about the shari3 khaleej location, the TSC restaurant. You’re sure it’s the TSC Salmiya?

Or maybe it’s both.

Haha didn’t think of this! Still though, they sell expired food all the time and sometimes change the stickers. They also have higher markups than anyone else. It deserved to get penalized, unfortunate that they had to wait until they didn’t like an MP to do it.

seriously doubt this could be the case. Kit kit is the number one selling chocolate bar here and I find it hard to believe that they have 2 year old stock of kitkats. I bet its politically motivated to hit at Khalid Sultan

no no no! Kitkat was the greatest kuwaiti fastfood place ever! They seriously have the world’s best chicken fillet!! or used to now… 🙁
Someone should recruit their cooks!

Well i sound like an idiot now, i thought it said salwa center, not sultan center salwa… off to bed -.-‘

Also got a broadcast today with pics of official docs that Americana brand food company was closed down on June 10th by the ministry due to tampering with expiration dates.

Have they been to Geant 360 and seen the salad the bar? OMG – are they growing penicillian? There should be inspectors all over this country inspecting all food establishments and there should be a sign from the ministry on the counter stating that this restaurant etc. has been inspected and if someone gets food poisening they can call this number and it should be in English and Arabic. Did I just increase jobs?

haha wow, I stopped by today and the manager was near the parking telling and was telling everyone it was closed and I was like why? and he said the electricity was out..

Still think TSC rocks- their customer service and product variety is light years ahead of most coops in this country.

1) TSC isn’t a coop, it’s a supermarket. Their competition is Lulu and Geant, who are cheaper and have a better selection

2) Some of the coops are great and cheap.

Mark, you should provide advertisement consulting for the Sultan Center. Put a positive spin on it.

Their new ad campaign should be, “Sultan Center – What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”.

So why they closed it if there are lots of co-ops are also the same. I think its political and marketing factor.
Closing a store just for an expired KitKat 🙂

Oh please, If the govt was really inspecting foods properly then 3/4 of food places in Kuwait would have to be closed IMMEDIATELY and TSC would actually probably be on the very bottom of the black list.
By hitting TSC right away, you know the reason was not really due to failing food inspections. It’s so obvious, it’s not even funny. Especially when you see what’s happening with Khalid Sultan…

However, “Closed whole TSC because of an expired kit kat” should be on http://www.wtfq8.com hahahaha

I’m not a Sultan Center Staff but one of their customers. Prob an oversight on the expired product. I admit I find them far better than most co-ops/ hyper markets /marts etc. They stick to their offers dates unlike others. And I have come across other places having a higher markup than Sultan. Their customer service is also quite good. Re expired products, so many get food poisoning with KFC or some other joints – I don’t see that shutting down!

for how long?????
This shut down, as rightful as it is, will affect me, i buy some stuff from there!! :s

gosh, this reminds me of the time I saw a RAT running around in the meat fridge at Carrefour! I was literally about to throw up as I’ve eaten their meat before. GAH

Gooood!!!!
I picked up a pack of omega 3 eggs the other day from TSC salmiya. On the pack, the expiry date was different from the one on the individual eggs inside. Pretty disappointing… All I did was to curse them and throw the eggs away…

Kudos to the Ministry…. Way to go Q8.

Oh comeone we dont have baqqala’s in salwa after midnight now its either mishref or beda3 roundabout

maybe it’s a political message to Khaled Sultan Bin Eisa which is the owner of Sultan Center which has recently realigned himself with the tribal opposition.

Bin Eisa said in a press release that people which are behind rejecting a certain religious-related law should be held accountable.

I have worked in the food industry in Kuwait and believe me Raw materials like Milk Powder and Chocolate bars that go on to make finished products with a one year shelf are in most cases expired. To cut down on costs companies buy multiple container loads and it very easy to tamper with dates when you are not in retail business.

You may love them or loathe them but there’s absolutely no denying them their yeoman service to this nation during the dark dark days of the invasion.

Hello All,

For the past couple of years I was a TSC board member. I am also family. The only reason I was put on the board is so that the ‘founders’ can ‘share and keep the’ millions of KDs they are making IN the family, leaving out investors and robbing them of what is truly theirs. You see, after the money has been equally divided by the board members for the work they do, nothing was left to the public. My share of the pie? KD 10 Million, which was deposited in my bank account. Because I travel for work a lot, it is actually my fault that I never check my bank account. So, as soon as someone picked up the phone and told me the above story, I went around like a maniac checking ALL my bank accounts (I have one) trying to locate that money. I have been unsuccessful so far (I still think the stole it). Ill make you guys a deal- whoever helps me locate that KD 10 Million, I will give them HALF of it, cuz if I had that kind of money, I would buy a mansion….in Bora Bora, and a Safari Camp in South Africa…and a HUGE ranch in Boston, MA, where I could go live there PERMANENTLY with my 13 cats…and adopt 50 more.

ps. TSC Salwa’s closing down is 100% political. Please don’t ask me why, I stopped watching TV 10 years ago, and I don’t know if anyone has noticed, but we have a zoo for parliament. Peace xx

I have located your 10 million but I have already spent the money on my growing cupcake business. Dont worry i will double your money by the end of the year inshallah and we can both get starbux lattes.

PFunk- I was kinda hoping for a cat sanctuary to be honest. But BEST OF LUCK in your cupcake business (I LOVE cupcakes) and once you ‘show me the money’ we can drink all the lattes you want! 😉

They might be closing that due to zoning violations :I at least they threatened to. I hope not, that place is great.

lulu got their licence sorted out end of last year after the baladiya tried to close them down. you might have noticed that electrozan got closed and then reopened after lulu got their licence sorted.

khalid sultan does not own the sultan center. Jamil does, but he’d not very popular with the government either.

When sultan center open in the boulevard salmiya then they are supposed to close the main salmiya branch and redevelop, if the money is available, as they will have the shaab and boulevard branches to cover salmiya.

But whilst they are doing this geant will open a hypermarket in the basement of the new salem mall right in the middle of salmiya (tho parking might be a problem there).

Khalid actually owns more shares in Sultan then Jamil does. Correct, TSC was Jamil’s idea back in the early 80’s, but all brothers own shares. Khalid owns most shares, followed by Abdulla, then Jamil. (Last I checked- I could be wrong) x

People..stop complaining.. if you don’t like it DONT shop there anymore..
But why don’t you try to have a valid discussion instead of just attacking. You want to attack then offer solutions..

I have been a supplier to sultan and they refuse to take anything that is about to expire in 6 months time, plus the municipality does not allow any items into Kuwait that will expire within 6 months..

As for the stickers? why don’t you check which company supplies them to Sultan first …
Second: Kuwait has wrong strict laws for foodstuff that the municipality don’t help when you bring in your container load since it will take them at least 2 weeks to clear it and when you get good that must be cleared then there goes the shipment. Why hasn’t anyone attacked the municipality for their corruption and under the table dealing?

Thats why we are 50 years back, because of how we think and how we are aiding in destroying OUR country that was once a leader, now get off ur butts and do something to help salvage whats left of KUWAIT..

For Pete’s sake, where are on earth are Lou, Greg and Gary going to tank up on their weekend fill of Schweppes soda(for you know what 🙂 now that TSC Salwa are shuttered?! Wet weekends in Salwa are never going to be the same again absent TSC.

Quick question ,Just for my knowledge; What do you as a supplier do when you have tons of stuff in your warehouses that are gonna expire within 06 months? Do you get rid of them or do you sellit at cost price on the lower end of the market like the whole sale markets in Rai and Shuwaikh? I know the the little people who shop from those really dont care about the dates. Frozen stuff close to 90 days is good enough coz they are mostly bought by families who have large amount of people or restaurant suppliers who cater to small restaurants that really wouldnt mind buying cheap products. Also what happens say you cant move the stuff at all then what? I know you pay huge sums to get the stuff in .. so what do you do ??

This would never happen in Coops, they’re extremely sensitive about shelf life!
Good for them for shutting down Sultan Center, a lot of people i know have ended up buying basic products (corn flakes, etc) that has ended up either expired or on the verge.

damn i bet the owner is losing some serious cash ( paying workers , expired egg , expired milky products , bread , and also remember in coming shipments ) thats like 10,000 KD loss a day

You can actually look up TSC’s financials on their website as they’re public ally traded. You can figure out how much they’re losing in a day that way.

10 grand aint nothing for the Sultan Family.. Chump change as far as they are concerned…

Me neither…..no more shopping at ANY TSC!!

CONGRATS to the Ministry!

Places like Lulu/Mishref rocks!!

PL.

This is gross! You don’t say they were (mis)-guided by Gujju business operating principles now, were they?!

Can somebody please translate that notice word for word? don’t have any tools to extract and translate the text online. thanks!

Oh and btw, I work from Sulaibiya and have many times seen expired stuff on their counters. I’ve brought it to their notice multiple times, but it just keeps happening. In this e-Age where software is king, there is no reason not to have a good inventory management system. This is just poor attitude and caring towards the customer – buy it if you want to. Thank God for Lulu
