The 99 Village Theme Park

I was emailed photos of the Teshkeel Comics theme park thats currently being created out in Jahra. The official opening date is March 19 but judging by the pictures the park looks disappointing. From what I can see (which isn’t much really) it looks like they took a regular theme park with regular rides and just stuck Teshkeel Comic stickers everywhere. The 99 is such lame lukewarm comic and this just makes it that much more crap. It’s opening in jahra hahahahah nuff said.

Even the name is stupid, it sounds like the dumb 3arrrabic number 7roof IRC chat speak. 7abiby ya3nni i want reed the99, u want also i bring for u 2morrow in skool? we can red it 2gether in skool 7amam…

everything is for KIDS !!! wat about elders man …. !??
we should take our kids … and where should we go ???

LOOOL! at the Super-Pink-Girl with the scarf … i guess they forget to pump it from the back at least it would similar to these days scarfs styles … her outfit is damn HOT & not Islamic at all!! 😛

Someone needs to explain to me how a Viking ship and an Alice in Wonderland character (fourth photo after the jump) are related to Muslim superheroes.

Also, loving that the rides are segregated. HA!

The designs are far out and fascinating. I haven’t seen something like this in Kuwait. There’s an ancient Middle Eastern story behind the wonderful 99 characters. What happened to the other theme park-Cartoon Network Theme Park? I see you have posted only a press release about it. Let’s see what it looks like.

bl 3aaax the 99 is a rlly creative and smart comic!!! bs akeed things like that arent encouraged in kuwait ! theme park looks bad tho.; hopefully inshallah a movie comes out in the like not so far future!

All the walls were painted with the theme to give no room for graffiti 🙂

The concept of 99 is interesting, the whole notion that groups (or teams) make superheroes – not a single person.

Hi Guys. The 99 has now been covered by thousands of newspapers and magazines globally including TIME, NEWSWEEK, THE NEW YORK TIMES, and THE WALL STREET JOURNAL. FORBES called THE 99 one of the TOP 20 TRENDS SWEEPING THE GLOBE. We have successfully launched in the Middle East, India, Indonesia, and have signed deals in France and soon in Turkey. In fact, THE 99 animation is currently being coproduced by ENDEMOL (Star Academy, Deal or not Deal, Big Brohter) for global audiences by the end of 2009. All this from our office in Kuwait City. We have been successful as an idea that has been reviewed positively literally by thousands AND have been a consistent force in stating and enforcing the positive values in Islam that ALL humanity shares. We understand that our theme park in Jahra is not Disneyland. But it is the FIRST theme park in the GCC (not the first amusement park) and I am proud that an idea I had in Kuwait has been sold in various countries in various ways. To think an idea born here can be sold around the world when we are used to buying others’ ideas and bringing them here means we can put globalization to work for us, we do not need to be its slave. THE 99 has shown that we can be its master. AND I hope that those of you who think they can do better will go out and build bigger and better and more intelligent things. Let’s stop being a people of complainers. Let’s be proactive. If what I have achieved is that each of you that didn’t like THE 99 went out and created something bigger and better, then I would be even more proud of what I have accomplished. Thanks for the support and feedback. And please visit us in Jahra. Salam. For more info please visit http://www.the99.org or email me at [email protected]

It looks good .. and come on guys the theme park is new .. I’m sure in the near future there will be new rides ” those with the new technologies” ! I think the “Tashkeel” group was istablished in 2006 which is only 3 years ago .. they have done a good job so far building their group and creating a theme park is a huge step for this new group .. wish them the best ..

We are working on the diecuts. A lot of what you see above are works in progress. I wanted the doors opened on Feb 25th because of the significance of the date (Feb 25th) and the significance of this being a Kuwaiti premise that has taken the world by storm. We even launched the Kuwaiti members of THE 99 on Feb 25th (it has been a few years and no Kuwaiti representation on the team because I thought it would be too cheesy to launch the Kuwaiti too early). The Kuwaiti emmbers are twins, and their power is creativity (only fair since THE 99 is a creative Kuwaiti concept!) Clearly, the viKING sign will be replaced by viEMIR (kidding, it hopefully will be removed). And we will need more diecuts. We will have walkabout mascots which the kids loved when they walked about on Feb 25th. We look forward to welcoming you and your families. But if you’re picky, please wait until March 19th!

Mr. Naif,

Its a great work, and all the best, my good wishes are with you.
BUT …

What i see is only for KIDS, is there anything here for elders? i mean comon … we take our kids there … they get to enjoy, and we do? sit on grass or chair and wait for them, or max have bbq, which is so common here in Kuwait …

Why you and your organization come up with something for elders too .. its just a sugestion.

peace

Seriously people here should learn to be more optimistic, when no new projects are made people whine and when they are made they still whine and complain.

Jahra lately seems to be the area with the most developments, Al Salayl Resort and Mall. Now this amusement park, and a bunch of other projects.

Wallah good for them, that place will be filled with the people living in Jahra.

Some suggestions would be, so seriously fill up that park with rides, hopefully new high tech rides not the boring rides in every single park in Kuwait. Comon get some ideas from Universal or something, I know its a costly project, but invest in new rides and people will travel the distance to check them out.

Our long terms plan is to be able to do exactly what you are suggesting. But investing in a high tech park with visas being about as easy (and as comfortable) as a colonoscopy in this country mean that the market will be extremely limited and a loss proposition to anyone attempting such an endeavour.

Naif, I have no idea why you (Teshkeel) are taking such an aggressive approach towards your branding and strategy. How long has it been since you launched the first comic?

Don’t you think you should wait a while, until the comics are more popular and have reached various age segments and countries until you transform the idea into something more profitable?

By case study, you’ll find that Archie comics, Disney cartoons, among others have all waited until their ideas were absorbed by the targeted market when they started producing action figures, stationary, movies, and theme parks.

You want to transform your comics concept into something else only when your audience is attached to it. It’s too early, for launching a theme park, and like the feedback you’ve already recieved; people are going to be indifferent.

Congrats on your opening anyway.

Hi Isaac. Thank you. And great question.

It is not Teshkeel that has been aggressive, it is partners who stepped up, believed in what we were doing and took the risk. For example, the Theme Parks are financed by one of our first round investors. They stepped up and believed very strongly in the premise. But on a business note form my end, I raised money for THE 99 twice over the last 6 years. Raising money for an Intellectual Property in the MENA region has been like splitting hairs. People like to touch and feel what they invest in which is only more poignant in an economic downturn. So the answers to your questions are many. But the only thing consistent in intellectual property licensing is that all roads lead to Rome. Pirates of the Caribean was a theme park ride before it became a comic and movie. Spiderman was a comic before it became a movie. Scooby Doo was a cartoon before it became a movie and comic series. And THE 99 was a comic that became a them park right before its animation series was release globally (end of 2009 Inshallah.)

Best
Naif

Hmm, interesting. However, regardless of the sequence of events here (comic, park, animation), you’re going too fast.
As important as intellectual property is the brand/ concept’s ability to last. Yes, spideman and scooby doo were successful, but only because they’ve been there for as long as I could remember before being transformed into cash cows. Take The Watchmen for example, a ten comic book series between since 1985, and in 2008, achieved only $139 mn revenues when their budget was $120 mn. Spiderman’s first movie alone generated $830 with a lower budget.

all are talking and complaining.
I would like to know all about this park-opening time, cost of tickets etc.
How it is different from doha entertainment city
thanks

Hi Dr. Nav,
THE 99 Village theme park opens everyday at 4 pm till midnight. There is no entrance fee, you need to pay for the rides as and when you get on them.
Doha Entertainment City is an entertainment park while THE 99 Village is a theme park designed on THE 99 concept. You get to feel the characters in THE 99 story. There are huge posters, flags, muppies depicting THE 99 characters which you and your children will enjoy. You can call THE 99 Village Park Manager on 24574862 or 24574639 for more details. Enjoy your visit to THE 99 Village theme park.

Hi Dr. Nav,

THE 99 Village has begun charging a nominal entrance fee of KD 0.250 on week days (Sunday-Wednesday) and KD 0.500 on weekends (Thursday-Saturday). There are also various promotions available when you buy tickets for children and youth. Hope you enjoy your visit to THE 99 Village theme park.

@ Mataxe …

Is there anything for elders there … or only kids?
What should we do when we go there … apart of BBQ, food and talk (which is so common in kuwait) wat is there to do ?

I think we need to cut Naif Al-Mutawa a little bit of slack here. Even if you don’t read the comic book we all need to give him some “Todd McFarlane” credit. Spawn went from being a brand new IP to becoming a best-selling comic book, toy line, animated series, and live-action feature film in less than 5 years. Whether or not you like Spawn, you have to give McFarlane credit for getting all of that done. I think Naif Al-Mutawa deserves the same amount of credit too. By the way, why hasn’t Naif Al-Mutawa branched out into creating action figures? That would seem to be a logical step.
